I think you guys are really stretching in thinking that Portland could make a strong offer for Giannis compared to other teams

to start with, Portland's 1st's for 26-27-28 are encumbered. Yeah, blahblah I know the Blazers can make low-value conditional trades of those picks but other teams won't have to add conditions.

For another thing, if Milwaukee is trading Giannis and starting a rebuild, they'll want to start the rebuild right away; they won't want to wait till 2029. Other teams can fill in picks for the years Portland can't. As for the Blazers pick this coming draft, It may very well be that Giannis won't ask for a trade prior to the draft so that might not be any leverage

Portland can offer a couple of expiring contracts in Ayton/Simons/Timelord/Thybulle. That might carry a little bit of weight but those are not rebuilding assets; and other teams can offer expiring contracts too

No way are we the best offer.

My money is on HOUSTON.

Alperen Sengun (routed elsewhere for more picks?)
Reed Sheppard
Jabari Smith
2025 #9
1st Best of 2027 #1 between Phx, BK, and Hou
2nd Best of 2027 #1 between Phx, BK, and Hou
1st Best of 2029 #1 between Phx, Dal, and Hou
2nd Best of 2029 #1 between Phx, Dal, and Hou

Bucks probably could trade Sengun to the Pels and get Zion and their 26 and 27 picks back.

yeah, that looks like a damn good package

would that have to wait till Sengun's new deal starts in July or is BYC not a thing anymore?

I wonder if the Bucks would be more interested in Van Vleet's big expiring + all those picks + Shepard + Amen + Jabari for Giannis + Kuzma. Bucks move off a lot of salary that way.

I think the Spurs could offer a pretty damn good package for Giannis and if Giannis wants to win he would be much obliged.

Yes - would have to be after July.

From Houston's end, I would anticipate that they would rather keep Van Vleet for roster balance over the alternative. Figuring that Gainnis is really more of a C/PF these days, Houston has less need for Sengun - but would need Van Vleet's shooting.

After thinking about this a bit more - here is what I think both teams do:

TRADE:
Alperen Sengun
Reed Sheppard
Cam Whitmore
2025 #9 (Drafted by Houston & Traded after signing new contract)
1st Best of 2027 #1 between Phx, BK, and Hou
2nd Best of 2027 #1 between Phx, BK, and Hou
1st Best of 2029 #1 between Phx, Dal, and Hou
2nd Best of 2029 #1 between Phx, Dal, and Hou

Bucks keep Sengun, Sheppard, & Whitmore, & the draft pick.
You let Lopez walk and you S&T Portis to a team that can use him. Bucks would be under the tax line, so they wouldn't need to cut any more salary.
You let Dame rehab... IF he's showing promise that he might make it back - you trade him at that point... If not, you just ride out his contract.

Houston makes a deal with Van Vleet to opt out of his $44M contract & re-sign for 3 yrs at $100M. This would allow Rockets enough room to fill out the rest of their roster. Re-sign Adams for ~$12M and Tate ~$5M. Target someone like Dinwiddie with the Tax-MLE.

yeah, that's probably better, especially if the Bucks can get under the tax

but my gawd, the wings Houston would have: Giannis, Jabari, Eason, Brooks, Amen...even with Giannis playing C half of the time that's still a logjam. I'd wonder how well Amen would fit with Giannis. Not well I'm thinking as they both want to slam into the paint at every opportunity and neither can spread the floor. Houston would not be a good shooting perimeter team

Feels like it’s to early to trade for a player like Giannis unless your throwing all the cake batter out and buying a cake that has to eaten in next couple of years or you’re back to where you started 4 years ago. ( Sorry terrible analogy).

now if we can keep Sharpe, Deni, Tou and still have Giannis it might make sense.

We were 3rd seeds twice with Dame but never a contender. Got swept once against the Pelicans but made the WCF the other year. To me a contender is a team that is trying to win multiple playoff series and has a realistic possibility of that happening. Giannis gets us to that level. Some can argue semantics but we're splitting hairs here with word definitions. We certainly wouldn't be a top favorite with Giannis but we'd be one of the few teams with a chance - which is very rare. The Dame teams never had enough two way players on defense or offense but with Giannis, Deni, Camara, Scoot, Clingan, some of our youth improving it's at least a possibility.

Ultimately Giannis being dealt depends on all 3 of what team Giannis accepts going to, what the market is, and what the Bucks decide to do. I certainly think the Blazers should heavily explore the possibility though. It eventually might turn out its better for us to be the 3rd team in a Giannis trade or just keep those Bucks picks for a future year.

I will say that it is nice to have a Blazers offseason where there is a scenario we could acquire an All-NBA level player and that it could actually make sense for the team both short and long term. Been a LONG time since that was the case. Even when we had Dame and either the #7 pick or #3 pick to flip for a Jaylen Brown level of vet it didn't seem like that type of roster would actually have the two way players to contend. Having two way wings in Deni and Camara opens up possibilities this franchise hasn't had since at the least the best Aldridge teams. It might be the best foundation we've had since the Rasheed era.

I enjoyed watching Lillard but I never saw a realistic way to transition a team with a short poor defensive ball dominant player into a title contender. Not saying that will happen now, but at least we have a couple of the correct pieces to start working on the puzzle.

the year we went to WCF with Dame didn’t we have big leads in a few of those games?

All 4 of them we had double digits leads, even 20 point leads in a couple of them.

that’s what I was thinking. I was surprised so many didn’t think that team could improve. GS was so dominating at that time and to have big leads in every game seems like we weren’t as bad as people thought.

not in game 1. Biggest Blazer lead was 5-0

Game 1:

Game 2 was different. Looks like biggest Blazer lead was 17, early in 3rd Q

Portland led 108-100 with 4:28 left in game:

4:16.0 D. Green makes 2-pt layup from 2 ft
3:54.0 C. McCollum misses 3-pt jump shot from 29 ft
3:34.0 K. Looney makes free throw 2 of 2
3:19.0 C. McCollum misses 3-pt jump shot from 26 ft
3:06.0 A. Iguodala makes 2-pt dunk from 1 ft (assist by D. Green)
2:42.0 C. McCollum misses 2-pt layup from 8 ft (block by D. Green)
2:30.0 K. Looney makes 2-pt layup from 1 ft (assist by D. Green)
2:09.0 M. Leonard misses 2-pt layup from 2 ft
2:01.0 S. Curry makes free throw 1 of 3
2:01.0 S. Curry makes free throw 2 of 3
2:01.0 S. Curry makes free throw 3 of 3
1:47.0 C. McCollum misses 3-pt jump shot from 25 ft
1:03.0 S. Curry makes 3-pt jump shot from 29 ft (assist by C. McCollum)
0:52.0 K. Looney makes 2-pt dunk from 1 ft (assist by D. Green)
0:32.0 C. McCollum misses 2-pt jump shot from 11 ft
0:12.0 D. Green makes 2-pt layup from 3 ft (assist by S. Curry)
0:04.0 D. Lillard misses 3-pt jump shot from 28 ft (block by A. Iguodala)
111-114

The Warriors, as usual, threw a blanket over Dame and insisted that CJ couldn't beat them. He proved them right by going 0-5 in the last 4 minutes

Game 3 was similar....biggest Blazers lead looks like 18 points

Game 4....biggest Blazer lead in 1st half looks like 12 points

upload_2025-5-2_11-56-56.png

Meyers Leonard hit a 3 point basket with 32 seconds left in the 2nd Q giving Portland a 69-57 lead....then, disaster:

0:28.0 S. Curry makes 3-pt jump shot from 30 ft
0:09.0 S. Curry makes clear path free throw 1 of 2
0:09.0 S. Curry makes clear path free throw 2 of 2
0:02.0 S. Curry makes 3-pt jump shot from 31 ft
65-69

Blazers built back a 17 point in the 3rdQ, 95-78 with 1:55 left, then more disaster

1:42.0 S. Curry makes 3-pt jump shot from 30 ft
1:05.0 D. Green makes 2-pt layup from 2 ft (assist by S. Livingston)
0:35.0 S. Livingston makes 2-pt jump shot from 8 ft (assist by Q. Cook)
0:15.0 K. Looney makes free throw 1 of 2
0:15.0 K. Looney makes free throw 2 of 2
87-95

if you're keeping track, that Portland being outscored 17-0 in the last 2:23 of the 2nd and 3rd Q's

game went to OT, but Warriors made plays, Portland didn't

the noticeable number was that over the last 3 games Portland led for over 99 minutes; Warriors led for less than 37 minutes. But Warriors led when it mattered

Lol I was off by 3 whole points over two games. We still had 4+ possession leads in 3 of 4.

Yeah I think it's probably too early for us to trade for Giannis. At least need to have a core make the playoffs before an all-star would want to join, let alone MVP candidate.

Now if there was another way to get a Sabonis type of player first then also get Giannis yeah maybe that would make sense. Just don't think we have the assets for both.

We're probably going to be the most discussed team for Giannis trades - but as the 3rd team.

So we give up that super 2029 pick and two swaps to flip Grant for Sengun.

Id clearly rather keep the picks but I guess if someone thinks Sengun will be an allstar then there's the argument for it.

Now if we get the 2027 Phoenix 1st Id consider it.

You missed the part where we trade Clingan.

Will be an All Star? He already is! And he’s still only 22.

The more I think about it, it's become clear to me that when Cronin traded for Bucks, picks, his eye is on Giannis.

- Giannis is the type of superstar that's ok with small market
- He is a needle mover
- He would want out should the Dame pairing not succeed
- Having their future picks gives us a path to land him

So yeah, Giannis to be a Blazer this summer.

Good points. Yeah I guess I just think of him as more of a role player or a guy that looks good on a team of equal level starters.
You can think of him as a role player if you want to but it doesn’t make it true. He hasn’t reached his ceiling yet. He has poor man’s Jokic potential. And when Jokic retires, he’ll be the best center in the league.

Hjs defense is poor. Clingan is someone we have needed for a long time and is a great rim defender and is still young himself.

hard pass
