Step 1: Qualify Hickson and Maynor (Cap hold of 13 mil)

Step 2: July 1st, we sign Maynor for 3.5 mil per and Hickson for 6 mil; leaving us 4 million in cap space.

Step 3: Offer Freeland + Barton + 4 million cap space for Gortat + Frye.

Step 4: Celebrate!

why the hell would they trade Gortat and Frye for that? I also don't believe that trade quite works financially.

Supposedly PHX were going to trade Gortat to OKC for just a late first and salary filler. Mags doesn't put a 1st in this though so don't think they take it.

I think you are right on the salary part. Wouldn't Gortat and Frye make more then 4 MIL more then Freeland and Barton?

Well they were rumored willing to trade Gortat for late first rounder and Perkins. Which is better?

I thought the rumor was Toronto's first, which is a lotto pick. But if I were them, I'd take the late 1st and Perkins. Perkins can still play some, but more importantly, he's the price you pay for gaining what could be a solid asset in a pick. With our trade, they get nothing valuable at all. They can get better than taking two scrubs, and again, I don't think it works financially.

Financially it kills them though. Perkins is old and obviously not a player you rebuild with. In my scenario, we take on Frye's contract; which would seem like the tax for doing business. That's the incentive. We eat their 6 mil contract in Frye.

the two combined make 14 million next season. In your scenario, we have 4 million in cap space. Freeland and Barton does not get us those two.

Okay then we renounce Hickson. Problem solved.

Boy, you really don't give a single shit about defense, do you?

I'm all for landing Gortat. My concern is, he has just next year left on his deal. When he's up for a new deal, he'll be 30, we'll have Leonard entering his 3rd year, hopefully ready to take over. Gortat will likely be looking for one last big deal. Likely too expensive to pay for us, but letting him go(and getting nothing out of Frye potentially), we essentially pay 20 million dollars for him next season(him and Frye combined)

That's when i think that Portland can send him to the team of choice (if Leonard actually looks like he is the future) and get the complimentary pieces to build around the new core.

you land him in the hopes of S&T him in a year?

Signing and trading players to make a championship team takes a bit more effort than selecting which TV dinner you're going to have tonight!

No I hope we can still keep him. But if we can't; we trade him. And there isn't a guarantee that Leonard works out either. It seems that management said the biggest concern is a starting caliber center. If they bring one in, then he will have a multi-year contract right? What makes that any different? Most will be in the same scenario. Most are wanting their payday right now.

Which centers available will have better defensive numbers than Gortat? For me, I want more of a shot blocker. One that makes teams think twice before they attack the rim. Gortat isn't as good being a man on man defender; but he is a good help defender. I think that's our weakness. Help defense!

Maynor and Hickson (especially) have been good for us, but only because of the supercrappitude of our alternatives. In general you have to wonder why two teams let Maynor go for practically nothing (one of them a team that is a title contender and which chose instead to rely on a rookie and an old age pensioner) and Hickson was actually waived by his previous team.

Maybe we struck lucky and those other GMs don't know anything. Or maybe their deficiencies undermine their benefits.

What is the deal around here with creating strategies to fill the bench? It is a waste of time.

Go after the highest quality / best players you can get with the money. If you get better players than the starters we currently have, our current starters get pushed to the bench and our bench improves.

To build a contender, you have to increase your top-level talent. Increasing top-level talent automatically pushes your current talent to the bench. Going after current bench players with the assumption they will be on our bench does not increase top-level talent and gets you nowhere but more first-round exits.

What might make them different is who they are and what it'd take to acquire them. Someone with one season left is a risk of leaving, or wanting to be around too long, at too high a price. I'd rather give up an asset to get him than take on Frye, if there's a chance Frye doesn't play again.

Not all blocked shots are created equal. It's like steals: saying somebody who racks up the steals is a good defender is oversimplistic, because some are gamblers.

Gortat is a starting C. I imagine the goal in this scenario is adding a starting C to the team?

Frye only has 2 more years left RR7. And from the talk of this forum, it seems everyone thinks 12-13 mil for a center is the price for who's available. Frye + Gortat = 14 mil. Subtract Freeland from that 14 mil and we have a 11 mil per center. I call that a bargain. And there maybe a chance that frye can actually play; which is house money

You are very true, but see I don't think our defense should be as bad as it should. Teams know our help defense is horrible. Gortat is better at help defense; therefore he would improve our "team defense"; which I believe is the only thing that's important.

Maybe Frye plays. But you don't know that going in, and if he doesn't you can add his additional year onto next season for Gortat. So one year of 17-18 million for him.
I also, though, don't care to spend that much(12-13) on one of the available options like Pekovic, who I think is a poor fit for us.

You throw out theories but you don't mention any possibilities.

Gortat is a starting center. I still believe that our starters are good. Maybe really good. Add a help defender, that sets mean picks and can roll to the basket efficiently are all deficiencies we had this season.

Freeland's contract works with Frye. So if Frye doesn't play, our hedge is freeland's contract.
