This is the best signing since RJ is gone. Everybody assumes he will be a 4 and thats it. He plays both forward positions. The contract is fine because a player of this caliber can't and won't be signed for less. I personally want Najera here for at least 4 years maybe more, thats how good he is. Every championship team has 2 franchises players sometimes 3, but they also have a bunch of quality role players. Thorn knows that and is rebuilding this team the right way.

The man is a defender and a banger, the nets don't many of these , if any. Now they do!

He will not hurt the nets. Everybody here seems that we have two many forwards, especially in the 4 position now. Well they won't have Swift the stiff for much longer, and KVH is gone as well with Haskell.

Everybody also seems to think that Marcus is gone, well i hope not either.

You forgot about this guy named Yi that we picked up.
 
yeah, put him under power forward position just ahead of Anderson. I forgot him cause i wasn't sure if he would be a 3 or a 4. Frank will have alot of combinations to work with here
 
That's what I'm saying - people complaining about this signing are going to regret it when they see how hard he plays and how much the Nets need a guy like him.

Failing to retain Eddie is going to hurt the Nuggets more than most people realize. Name a player on the current Nugget roster that gave more per minute than Eddie. He always hustled and worked very hard to become productive from behind the 3-point line. He might not be an all-star, but he was a strong part of the Nugget team while in Denver. Now we are left with Carmelo who plays defense when the spirit moves him, AI who has yet to play defense, Kenyon who is his own free-spirit, JR (fill in your own description) and Marcus who while productive recently is nearing the end of his playing years. Good luck in New Jersey, Eddie. You were a joy to watch while in Denver.

Najera is a good addition. He hustles, plays D and has a good attitude. He can compete with Simmons, Hassell, CDR, Hayes and maybe even Anderson and Yi for playing time. Since the Nets now will get offense from C (Lopez) and PF (Yi, Anderson), they don't need a star at SF.

The next move might be to trade Swift for a somewhat overpaid backup PG with a two year deal. Speedy Claxton of the Hawks is owed $11 million over the next two season. He should be expendable there with Mike Bibby, Acie Law, and Salim Stoudamire on the roster. The Hawks could avoid the second year of Claxton's salary and get depth at PF/C, and the Nets could get a player they might actually use for the money they're spending on Swift.
 
wow now we have good depth at the SF position. We came in very thin at it and now were fine for the next two seasons.
 
I have no problem with the Najera signing. I'm not big on the Hayes signing, though. Would have preferred a D-leaguer or undrafted rookie (like Carroll) so that a couple of the folks coming into camp have something real at stake and are the kind of guys that are going to be almost as thrilled to sit on the bench as to play in an actual game.

I'll be okay with Hayes if we move Hassell, Swift, and/or Ager somehow. But I really hope we find a way to keep Nenad AND have one roster spot open heading into camp. That will require a 3 for 1 or a couple of 2 for 1 deals, though.
 
how is najera playing the four. Is he mainly just a 3? If hes a good defender as a 4 this signing makes sense but if he only plays the three this signing is pointless. Hes 32 so isn't he on the downside of his career, how many minutes do we need to give a 32 year old. I like guys that hustle but I guess this signals another trade is coming and in fact we are not rebuilding the new R word is restocking.
 
I understand he's a terrific player, hustler, great glue guy, etc. If he was signed for $12M/2 years I wouldn't mind at all.

But, dammit, he's on the books for 2010. He'll be 34 at the time. It's $3M and one less roster spot, creating an unnecessary hurdle in the LeBron sweepstakes.

"Najera makes up for being an inch short for a power forward with toughness and energy. He runs the floor, mixes it up in the paint, and handles the ball well for a frontcourt player. He doesn't seek to create his own offense, instead relying on putbacks or dishes from his guards to provide layups and dunks. However, his size produces mixed results finishing around the rim, last year's flukey shooting percentage aside.

Najera's toughness makes up for his size at the defensive end, where he's an aggressive help defender and a willing banger in the post. However, he doesn't block shots and is mediocre at best on the glass."




Hopefully Najera isn't too short to defend good post players.
the flukey shooting percentage is in 06-07 Najera shot 57.6% from the field.
 
Hollinger's scouting report for Hayes for 07-08 season

"Hayes is fairly big for a small forward and can play the 4 in a pinch in smallball arrangements, but he was an average athlete even before the knee injury and seemed to be missing a little bit of zip of last season. He's not an elusive ball handler either, so he tends to rely on the jumper to bail him out. Unfortunately, he isn't a good enough shooter to just rely on that one skill to be his meal ticket and desperately needs to diversify his offensive game.

Defensively, Hayes is nothing to write home about, but he does the job and can defend most wings competently. Again, he seemed a little sharper before the knee injury that took most of his 2005-06 season, and that extra bit of quickness may come back this year."
 
I feel sorry for Vince. The guy is 31 years old and he's stuck on a team full of "nobodys". People critisize him for not being able to lead a team to a championship, he can't do it alone.

Well, Thorn said he wanted size, shooting and toughness. A lot of that in the seven players he's added...particularly the shooting.
 
nobody is really questioning the good things najera brings on and off the court...the question is why do we need 10 players who can play the forward spots?

but since najera is now a net, i will just concentrate on all those things he brings to the game...toughness, defense, shooting, hustle...all of which we need badly. $3M/yr for a guy like him is not overpaying (but no bargain either). he is the 10th most marketable player in the nba (9th is yi, 1st is lebron, all the others on the list are unobtainable).

as a sidenote, this blogger thinks brook lopez is the 3rd most marketable of the 2008 rookies. his real name is brooklyn...another marketing coup.

The Nets had nobody with close to the heart Eddie plays with. A player like this is critical for the number of young bigs the Nets have that don't understand the NBA game.
 
Najera has such a tradeable contract that by 2010 he will most likely be an ex-net...Hayes contract ends by 2010 so there is no big deal there...realistically I don't see any problem stockpiling talented youth, draft picks and role players/fillers as potential trade assets for this upcoming season...

But the situations aren't the same because a) Stefanski didn't give out those contracts, so he was making up for sins past and b) it is not as crazy as a market as 2010 will be, where everyone wants cap space (even the Knicks are talking about it!). Also, the Sixers had to give up a first round pick as well. Is the temporary boost that Najera will give us worth a first round pick?

I don't think there's anything he can teach them in 2010 that he can't in 2008 and 2009.

Whatever, I've said my piece, and, call me crazy, but I don't like giving 4 year contracts to 32 year old role players, on a team trying to have capspace in two years, AND with no aspirations of competing for a title this year or next year, AND with a logjam already in the frontcourt, AND with 15 players already under contract.

I guess I'm just bitter about the success Ed Stefanski is having in Philly. It's like running into an ex-girlfriend on the street and she has a hot new boyfriend with her. Meanwhile, your current girlfriend is nagging you about cutting costs and making yourself more marketable in Mexico. (OK, the analogy may need some work)

I don't think there's anything he can teach them in 2010 that he can't in 2008 and 2009.

My counter to you is I don't see how less than 3 million in a contract that summer is creating such a huge problem. Giving Eddie those extra 2 years to convince him to sign is a good move because he is everything the Nets need.
