Blazers make play for Turkoglu

Determined to make the first splash of the NBA's free-agent negotiating period early Wednesday, the Portland Trail Blazers are making a strong push to sign Hedo Turkoglu, the prized free agent of the summer.

While negotiations across the league were in the early stages, a person with knowledge of the discussions said the Blazers are trying to lure Turkoglu with a deal in the $50-million range. Contracts cannot be signed until July 7, when the annual moratorium on signing and trading players is lifted.

Other teams expected to make a play for Turkoglu, who earned a huge pay day by helping Orlando get to the NBA Finals, were Toronto, Detroit, and Sacramento. The Magic, who acquired Vince Carter from the Nets on the belief that they could not retain Turkoglu, are not expected to be a factor in a situation that involves Turkoglu getting $10 million a year.

Still need a PG, but I wouldn't be surprised if we were if the rest of our roster progresses like they should.

I don't think he does by himself, but he will improve Portland a bit. Combined with improvements from Oden (far and away the most important factor), Rudy, Batum and/or Bayless, Portland could be a contender next season.

Yes I think he could have solid contributions next season and we could have a shot. We aren't going to be favorites, but we could be a team that with a couple of lucky breaks is right there at the end.

No, but with the young talent on this team, I don't think his experience would hurt. If he's signed, expect a trade of Blake and Batum/or Outlaw/or Webster for a PG.

Absolutely. Four small forwards isn't a stable situation, even if Turkoglu and Outlaw can moonlight as power forwards. Hinrich isn't a sexy choice, but I have to say that I'd be pretty confident about Portland's chances with Roy/Aldridge/Oden surrounded by Hinrich and Turkoglu, though Batum certainly shouldn't be included in a deal for Hinrich.

I have some mixed feelings about Hedo being 'the guy' for our cap space, but hell.. I'm glad KP is expected to do something with the cap space and there is some confirmation that something that's going to happen. Go Blazers!

I think getting Turkoglu would be a great addition. I'd much rather have him than many of the free agents and Vince Carter. He could put the ball on the floor, pass well, hit from anywhere on the court, and is clutch. If they can get him and Miller, we are contenders. Hinrich, not so much.

If KP wants him, I think I can get on board. Of course I reserve the right to be highly critical after the first preseason game, if Turkey doesn't put up 80 points, 20 rebounds, and 30 assists.

I would hope Kirk is one of our last options on the table. I would MUCH rather have Andre Miller or Ramon Sessions. Anyone who actually drives the ball to the teeth of the defense rather than sit on the perimeter and chucks 3s.

Sessions is very unlikely at this point. The Bucks are definitely going to resign him. I'd rather have Hinrich than Miller because he's better off the ball and is a better defender.

I'm sure one or two of those latter guys will be traded if we get Hedo.

I'm not thrilled about Turkoglu, but for a reasonable price (to Turk, I mean, not to me) I can probably drum up some enthusiasm. He is a reasonably good player, he's just not the impact player he's been talked up as since the playoffs ended.
