Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

Rose is an MVP candidate, elite player, worthy of MAX contract. The CBA even has a Rose rule in it that allowed him to get paid big bucks. You can't say the same thing about Batum. In fact, the Blazers could do just as well at SF with a guy like Chase Budinger for considerably less money.

See the per 36 minute stats. Neither played 36 minutes/game though.

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

I was honking once and wanted it to work for him here too. I think the old rational of size winning out is losing favor though.

I think that's partially true, but there is something to be said for a monster front-line as long as they are paired with at least one elite wing. So while it's true that this year's finals featured two small-ball teams, the Lakers in very recent memory wouldn't have gotten their recent championships without Gasol and Bynum.

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

So I haven't waded through this whole thread, but did anybody ask themselves if this 12 mil/year figure was really coming from Minny? Something tells me this came straight from Batum's agent, if it was coming from Minny, wouldn't Nicolas have already come to an agreement in principle, because that is mad money right there ...

yeah, not sure were 45-50 came from. Batum is flying there today supposedly to meet with them.

That's a good point, with some guys like Hibbert, Wallace, Asik already agreeing to specific offers I have to aggre with you that what Nic's offer really is is likely up in the air, especially if he is flying there today. His agent could be pulling his usual crap.

I keep hearing its 4/45. Pretty big contract but unlike Denny I think Batum's defense (even though holligner hates it), the fact he can guard 4 positions, warrents this kind of contract since were offering Hibbert a Max. I'd rather work out a S&T with Minny for Derrick Williams (who I think can play 3 in the NBA) but in lieu of that i'll keep Batum at an overpriced bid to win now.

John Canzano: Expect agreement between Nic Batum and Minnesota would be contingent that offer sheet signed early on July 11. Minny won't want to be used. 2 minutes ago

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

There is absolutely no way I would support paying Batum 12 mil per year. If a team is stupid enough to pay that amount of money for a 3rd-4th option; then let them sink into cap hell. I would hate to lose Batum, but losing him for that amount is fine by me.

Sadly, we don't have another option at the 3 and if we end up with Hibbert, we certainly won't.

That's fine because we can trade players for a 3 in the summer. We better not make a mistake and match a toxic offer. That would be the end of our team! And what about Babbit? I know he ain't the cat's PJs; but he may suffice if have Hibbert to anchor the paint.

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

I still think we should offer him a little extra cash per year to get him to wait and sign AFTER Hibbert. Then everyone is happy.

What do you mean? Like offer 9-10 mil per season? Why would he accept that if there is this rumored 12 mil per deal?

After one game, Luke's defense would make you wish that you matched a max offer for Nic.

did you catch where he said EXTRA cash.

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

I'd rather be scrambling trying to find a wing to go with Lillard - Matthews - - Aldridge - Hibbert, than to continue to find a post Lillard - Matthews - Batum - Aldridge - ??

I'd just slide Matthews to SF until a better one could be found.

Lillard - EWill - Matthews - Aldridge - Hibbert is better than a poke in the eye!!!

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

Nate (Kansas)

If the Blazers get Hibbert, do think that they will still match the 12-13 mil per year offer from Minnesota on Batum?

Chad Ford (1:32 PM)

Yes. I think they are keeping Batum as long as his contract stays in the parameters we've been talking about.

Fuck no! I love Batum and think he is a pivotal piece for success; but not at 12 mil per! That is Wallace in prime production and before there was a big penalty on luxery tax. Paying Batum 12 mil per is a HUGE FUCKING MISTAKE! I don't care how awesome he is defensively. That type of pay now is equivalent to players that made 14-16 mil per in the past. Is he that type of player? Absolutely not!

I don't get it? What does this extra cash mean? You mean a side deal that's against the NBA rules? Like a bribe?

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

Sadly, we don't have another option at the 3 and if we end up with Hibbert, we certainly won't.

Ime Udoka was as productive as Batum in his one year here and we signed him during training camp for the minimum.

We are not going to be a contending team right away, we don't have to solve every hole with the roster immediately. I'm fine with us having to look for a possible SF or SG option if it means we don’t have our roster stuck with a horrific contract. Now if you think Batum has a chance at being an all-star go ahead and match. But I think he is a great roll player, so it will be more difficult to build a contending team if he is sucking up massive luxury tax and salary cap room.

I assume he means for more then Minnesota is offering, for more then $12 million per season.... no thanks.

With what I've seen so far; he is a 3rd-4th option at best. Maybe a gionobli at best to the Spurs. That is Best case Scenario IMO. 12 mil per is at least for a 2nd option type player; which is why I think an offer close to that for Hibbert is a sound choice. Hibbert and Aldridge is a perfect compliment to each other and I can see Hibbert easily being the #2 option on a team. Batum has the skills to be a #2, but lacks the heart and courage to be one. He just doesn't have that "I want the ball" mentality and doesn't have enough "natural talent" to coast as a #2 option. Many may disagree; but I stand firm with this opinion.

Dude, you either want to keep him or you don't. The rub is not losing out on Hibbert because Batum signs before him and pushes us over the cap. If you want to let him go, that's cool too, but we're going to be over the cap regardless. I'd offer him 12.5 per JUST to wait and sign after we've got Hibbert locked up.

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

What proof do you have that this is needed?
