Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

Dude, you either want to keep him or you don't. The rub is not losing out on Hibbert because Batum signs before him and pushes us over the cap. If you want to let him go, that's cool too, but we're going to be over the cap regardless. I'd offer him 12.5 per JUST to wait and sign after we've got Hibbert locked up.

If keeping him means paying him 12.5 per, then I would rather let him go. The days of luxery tax is in the past for Allen. I don't see him even agreeing on this.

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

I'd much rather spend that cap on a (poison pill?) offer for Eric Gordon.

That is not needed. The Blazers will be able to match if they want to.

Sources say T-Wolves will make, or have made, offer to Blazers SF Nicolas Batum. Blazers must wait to see what happens with Pacers C Roy Hibbert, who they offered max deal, first. I expect Pacers to match offer to Hibbert.

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

If we match Batum at 11 millionish, that would leave us around 10 million to sign FA's, right?

Dwight is that you?

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

My thought is if they match Hibbert, and we match Batum, we can still offer a 7-9 million contract to Hawes or Thompson ?

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

I also agree with starting Matthews at 3 if necessary, and say we should work out a Batum S&T with Minnesota for Ridnour, and go find another wing to replace him for less money.

And I say this independent of whether or not we get Dr. Hibbert

Dwight is that you?

What did I say that's false? If Batum signs an offer first, then it puts us in a bind because we can't match him and then sign hibbert. Once we match Batum that cap space is gone. Notice I said match, not simply when he signs the offer from minny.

A Batum/Hawes offseason would suck.

More on Batum
• ESPN.com's John Hollinger (Insider) on Nicolas Batum:
Additionally, Batum's on-court, off-court data suggests he may be wildly overrated. While lauded for his defensive potential, there is little to no evidence that he's been an impactful defender in the actual games; in fact, there's mounting evidence that he may be lousy at defense. It's possible he becomes an $11 million player, but he certainly hasn't been one up until now.

...

I would lean toward matching if I were Portland, but this is not a clear call. If they don't want to, their best move might be to involve Minnesota in sign-and-trade talks between now and the 11th -- say, for Luke Ridnour, given the Blazers' point guard needs -- which would also allow them to time the deal when it suits them given their other cap plans.

If we get hibbert you match batum because we are in a win now mode. Or work out a s&t for derrick Williams before the 11th. If batum gets 11 or under a year match and flip him to the spurs or another for something(even a trade exeption) next year. Because of batums youth he won't be as hard to move as some people are thinking.

Not sure why they would deal Williams, but I'd sure give it a shot if I were Olshey, Batum, Freeland, Claver, future 1st,????? Those are decent assets, and it would allow Minny to retain cap space as well. Two or threee of those assets might do it?

You do realize that has been debunked, right, by both Larry Coon and Storyteller.

If batum signs first, then we would not have the space to sign hibbert IF we matched batum

I thought we all went over this yesterday. Batum signs, Hibbert signs, it doesn't matter when the contracts get matched.

Olshey went through basically the same thing with De'Andre Jordan last summer.

Huh?

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

Yeah. I don't see how a contract offer can be made invalid after it's made and tied up for the 3 day period.

If Batum signed an offer sheet, and THEN Hibbert signed his offer sheet, if we matched on Batum which we would likely have to before hearing from Hibbert, then we would not have the cap space available for Hibbert.

Well, if Hibbert doesn't sign on July 11, then it's fairly obvious that he's not interested in signing with Portland. If he's interested, he'll sign the same day as Nic (assuming Nic also signs July 11), and the entire scenario is moot.

The offer sheet will be ready and waiting for Hibbert on July 11. Same for Batum on July 11. If the league processes Batum's 30 seconds prior to Hibbert's, it doesn't mean that the cap space for Hibbert goes away, and his contract offer is invalid.

Right. I thought Hibbert had to sign before Batum in order for us to get them both. Literally minutes before

correct. Unless the league just goes by day, instead of actual minutes. If they go by actual time signed, then we need Hibbert to sign first. Or, would randomly need Indiana to decline early, which is extremely unlikely.

On one hand, Indy can tie up the Blazers' cap space for 3 days max. On the other, if Indy needs the QO sized cap space Hibbert represents, to sign his replacement, they might decline early.

That's been debunked. If that's the case, then every team and agent in the league is going to have their player sign literally the first second of July 11. Even with that, who knows really who signed first? Is there going to be a leaguewide video conference, with eagle-eyed league execs seeing who dots their I's and crosses their T's first at various offices around the land?

If that's the case, I like Portland's chances, because Roy Hibbert only has 10 letters, while Nicolas Batum has 12 letters. Both have one 'I' and one 'T', so that's a push. Somebody needs to teach Hibbert how to sign his name reallyreallysuper fast!

Anyhow, the whole "minutes" argument is absurd. Dwight Jaynes doesn't know what he was talking about last night.

So it's day? Can Indy be shit heads then and wait until 11:59:59 to say they will match Hibbert?
