Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

The Player's Association hasn't updated to the current CBA on their site, but here's what the old one said:

I'm going to assume that the new language is similar except for the number of days allowed. Note that it says "from the date" the offer is received. It doesn't say from the "time" it was received. My bet is that teams have until the end of the 3rd day's date to make their move so that all offers received on the same date are operating under the same clock.

So the problem still applies though..... 11:59 PM on the final day.... who blinks first? If we are hoping to keep Batum and secure Hibbert, we better hope that Indy declines before the time runs out. If that's really how things work.

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

I don't know the answer to that question, but I've heard nothing out of the Blazer camp stating that the timing of having Batum sign matters much to their pursuit of Hibbert.

Olshey, I believe made a comment about wanting to sign Batum, but that there is a sequence involved. Same thing he mentioned last year when waiting on matching Jordan to sign Billups.
I would imagine the "sequence' to be signing Hibbert first. Again, I don't know if it goes off of time. But I have seen nothing to state which way it is.

So do they wait until 11:55 PM and if Indy hasn't declined yet, we decline Batum and hope that Indy doesn't fuck us?

whats all the fuss about, hes not worth this money.

Good question. I know KP doesn't have much love for PA, but it would be more than just KP screwing over the Blazers, and Donnie Walsh is very respected among the owners.

That hypothetical could happen, though, I suppose.

That's all we're arguing. What happens if we have to choose between matching Batum or letting him go and hoping Indy doesn't screw us. It doesn't matter if it's 12:01 am or 11:59 pm. At least if it was based on first-come-first-serve we could hope to get the deal in before Minny and have a minute to match before Indy's deadline. At this rate, we will just have to hope that Indy decides to decline to pursue other options and we get some cushion to make a decision on Batum.

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

"Nic, whatever the Timberwolves are offering you, we will offer the same and throw in a 5th year"

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

You keep saying it's absurd, but I would love to hear how you think it should go down.

The way I think it should go down, and the way that makes most sense to me, is that all offers submitted on a particular day are considered to be the "same time" and when the offer is matched, the matched player's caphold changes only after all other offers that were made the same day (as the matched player's offer was made) are resolved.

That seems most logical and realistic to me, but until someone actually shows some evidence, I'm not going to make any assumptions about how it's done.

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

I think the Blazers and Batum will come to an agreement way before the signing period. If Batum signs with Minnesota I think Portland has already let him know they don't want to match. The Blazers wanted him to find his market value and bring it back to them. He has done that and now they will make an offer based on that and it will never get to a point where he signs with Minnesota if the Blazers are serious about bringing him back.

That would be the most fair.... but knowing how fucked up the league is, I would doubt it's actually that fair.

This is what I see happening as well.

Agreed, you offer him up the guaranteed 5th year. Or, hell, make it a player option. At similar money, as long as they wait.

I want to see those fax machines flowing at 12:01!

Hell if they got massive prime time ratings for the decision how about they televise the "race of the offer sheets!"

Exactly... like I said earlier.... some extra cash to hold off until we've signed Hibbert (or someone else).

Do we know how much Minny is actually offering? The 4/50 figure is probably thrown out by his agent.

Or we could just email that shit :devilwink:

Nate, I have had it:

You have crapped all over this thread that is about Batum's offer from Minnesota with this garbage:

For one final time; the league operates on DAYS. Always has.

Unless you can provide us all with a link to a reputable source that supports your silly contention (which you have already been asked for several times), please drop all the worthless speculation in this thread. Please start a new thread for that discussion. In addition move all the posts in this thread about this "timing issue". (which in fact, isn't an issue).

And another thing, your Avatar drives me nuts. I fucking hate it.

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

We can't say for sure about any sort of issues between Portland and Batum/his reps.

But one thing to consider.... the apparent "issue" or "tension" could all be fake. I don't know how the cap works with things like this, but does Portland have to actually come to "agreement" with Hibbert before they can come to agreement with Batum?

Remember.... the summer of 1996 when we traded for Sheed. Juwan Howard signed with the Heat (leaving the then-Bullets), then the Heat re-signed Alonzo Mourning. The Howard signing was later terminated because Mourning came out in an interview and said that he had agreed to his new contract long before they had gotten Howard, but that he didn't want to sign first and use the team's cap space.

Just a thought... again, I don't know how this type of stuff works with the new cap, but this could all be part of the ploy to get another free agent before the team re-signs Batum.

Very well said.

Either Nic accepts a 5 year deal from Portland at a similar yearly amount to what Minny is offering, or he rejects it and signs with Minny.

At that point, Portland moves on, and Nic joins Kahn's army of SFs in Minneapolis.

I refuse to belive this... the race of the faxes is so damn appealing!
