Trades can be separated for each team. From SA's perspective they are shedding salary. From the Blazers' perspective they don't have to include Mario for it to work so it's good there too. The Blazers would actually generate a TPE for Hezonja and the Spurs one for Carroll.

@Scalma's trade does work.

Edit: ESPN has a feature to click to "use" TPE for a player but even if you click on it the trade still says failed.

small forward and shooting guard is pretty much interchangeable in todays game. Most sites have him listed as a guard/forward.

It's a non-trivial distinction when the knock on a player is he's too small for the [wrong] position. Do you really think it's coincidental that he's playing much better at the position he's got the right tools for?

NBA.com lists him as a guard-forward, but ESPN has him as purely a shooting guard.

More importantly, he's playing the SG position according to the box score.

Good point about each team being able to structure its side of the deal separately. Crazy CBS rules. The Blazers would still be increasing their payroll, but not by as much. I guess it’s up to Jody on that.

I applied my common sense meter to it.

I applied mine too.

I watched forwards dominate most finals and conference finals this past decade and my common sense told me that small point guards and big men in suits are not preferable to a Center who is actually playing (HW), a big Forward who can shoot from anywhere, who is one of the best young talents in the league and another big SF who can defend multiple positions and shoot the open three.

Yeah, I'm not super high on that move but it would be a good sign that they aren't worried about payroll anymore after seemingly trying to save money this year.

There's a ton of players I'd rather pursue with the TPE if they're going to use it.

Just a reminder, we still have the $2.85 mil Hood DPE that we can use in a trade.

14 million for DeMarre Carroll.

Somehow I just don't think that's something Jody is willing to do. I don't even think Paul would do it given the context of the season. I'd rather give those 15-20 minutes to Nassir anyways - play him through the growing pains and hope you get a rotation player out of him sooner.

Malik Beasley is a guy I absolutely loved last year. He's a backup wing who projected as a perfect 3&d guy. He's been getting marginalized in Denver with all their depth and Porter coming on, and he's gonna be a RFA this summer. Ain't no way they're gonna pay him.

I'd look into him and try to lock down his bird rights.

hmmm...take a look at this comparison between Beasely, Trent, and Little:

I don't see much reason to trade for a player like Beasely when Portland already has 2 players that are arguably as good, or better, and play similar positions. And, Beasley will be RFA this summer, needing a new contract. Meanwhile, Little has 3 more seasons on his rookie deal, and Trent has another season on his

Carroll? We would need multiple 1st round picks to take that garbage contract back. His 3 point shooting has fallen off a cliff (23%) in the era when you need your SF to be 3 and D.

He has 13 attempts this season. That’s not a sample size.

Mario only makes about 1.7 mil. Carroll is 7 mil. A TPE can't be used in combination with a player.
Correct. However, in this case it would not be in combination. There would be essentially 2 trades.

Carroll -> into the Baze TPE
Mario -> into a newly created Carroll TPE.

It's a legal trade proposal

Beasley had a much better season last year, and given how young he is, I could see why some people would want to take the risk.

But he's due for an extension this off-season, and his regression is making him look very Allen Crabbe-ish.

Just don't include a 1st round pick or any of our young players for a player who is not a needle mover.
We usually tend to regret those types of trades down the road.

I like Malik beasley but his minutes would come at the expense of Trent/Little. The reason I like Carroll is because he’s more of a 3/4 that played a bunch of PF last year in Brooklyn. I also get why Portland wouldn’t want his contract, but the way I look at it is if they’re not dipping the tax, they may as well put out the best possible team. And next year his contract could be useful in a trade.

Woj:

The Timberwolves, Rockets and Hawks possess the assets to fulfill some of each team's goals: forward Robert Covington to Houston, center Clint Capela to the Hawks and potentially two first-round picks and an expiring contract to Minnesota, league sources said.

What kind of reality do we exist in where Robert freaking Covington can actually bring back 2 first round picks?

I have a feeling Neil has something up his sleeve and being a big Neil fan I'm sure I'm gonna like it

I prefer no expectations anyway. I hate when we go into a deadline with all these media types telling us how active Portland is and then Olshey get interviewed on deadline day with that little smirk on his face letting us know how quiet the phones were.

he's smirking because he's the one that planted the rumors about Portland being active

Capela
Covington
Carroll
Delo Russell
Marcus Morris
Rozier
Bogdanovic
Bertans
Randle
Iggy
Kennard
Tristan Thompson
Jrue
Love
Drummond
Rose

.........the names are starting to fly fast and furious.

So GS is going to get Wiggins and 3 1sts potentially?

So Atlanta gives Houston a first for Capela? Ok I can see that. Then Houston would give up two firsts for Covington? Are they nuts?

I think the starting lineup is set... I would love to get a guy like Bogdanovic as our 6th man... not sure what we would have to give up.

I am baffled by this kinda value for Covington, who is lowkey in need of load management.

Wonder who his agent is to drive up this level of interest.

typical 72 hours before deadline rumors. You should only believe about 20% of the rumors have some credibility, and about 5% of the rumors about the actual value teams are offering. Front offices and agents are spending more time spinning rumors than they are spending on the phone

As an aside, the Minny front office are almost all former Morey disciples. Easy to see why there's so much noise between the two teams.

if Minnesota gets two firsts for him just give their Gm a lifetime extension. Look at this shit, this is Covington this year vs Harkless last year

The picks could change to different years but this is the best I can come up with using the "known" components of the trade. GS actually ducks below the tax line which would be huge for them not going into the repeater tax next season. They'd also generate a decent TPE for this summer. Houston remains under the tax line as well.
