Love it for us, think LA would want that too, even with the tax implications. Not sure what PHX's motivation is though. Baffled by this news. This is a guy putting up 19/6 on decent efficiency who we know can defend a bit. And his contract is decent for his production.

Don't see why they would even want to move Oubre.

Still think you're missing the point. You really think if we had 10 more wins now and a healthy roster, we wouldn't move the expiring deals we have to get a star final piece to the puzzle? We obviously can't do that now because we're not good and need guys like Whiteside to even compete for hte final 30 games.

That was the point @hoopsjock and a few others here have been making in a Batum deal, or as I've been saying with guys like Dieng, etc. Having those contracts (whether it's a combo that add to 30 mil or is just a singular contract that's 30) next year when we are more healthy, and probably in a better position in the standings will be a boon.

I get the concept...I really do. I'm just not a buyer for a lot of these trade ideas.

for instance, take the Whiteside for Batum deal. I saw it justified by pointing to Capela being traded to Atlanta and what Atlanta traded away. Here's the thing about that: Atlanta really really wanted Capela; and Houston really really wanted Covington. There was strong motivation for a trade there. What team would really really want Batum? (or Love or Aldridge)

now, before you come in and say, again, I don't get the concept, I understand it could be that some team might really really want Simons (ha!) and Portland might need a bigger salary to make a deal. That's where Ariza comes in, and possibly an MLE signing. Ariza + Simons could bring back 20M in salary. Whiteside re-signed for about 12M would do the same thing. Whiteside + MLE + Simons could bring back well over 30M in salary

in other words, my view is that Portland does not have to make a bad trade now and take on bad salary next season just because there might be some unlikely hypothetical trade next season that could turn the team into a contender. They will have the options to execute that hypothetical trade without making a bad trade now

Again, as this was already addressed earlier, it wouldn't be unreasonable to include a 1st and/or a prospect like Simons in that deal.

And honestly, it really depends on what said GM is seeking to accomplish with a prospective Oubre deal. Do you have any idea what Phoenix is looking for? I don't. Which is why I throw something out and then ask a question like, "any chance of something like this?"--because I'm seeking opinion and feedback.

That Batum deal is horrible as I don't think Charlotte would trade a possible high lottery pick either.

This suggestion and your last one both can't happen. This one because Whiteside can't be traded back to Miami and Leonard can't be traded back to Portland. Miami also can't trade their 1st this year. For the other trade executives/coaches can't be traded with players.

If I also got a pick, yes. Really doubt PHX holds onto Oubre long term, especially when you consider they have Bridges and Johnson who play the same position.

Covington is under control for an extra season and I’m not sure Oubre is the better player. RPM is not favorable to Oubre at all. Doesn’t have him in the top 30 among SFs on either end of the court. I’d give up a protected first but I’ve admittedly always overvalued him.

Huh? You are backwards here man. Portland would be the one interested in "Capela and Covington type players." Atlanta was able to get Capela because they had Evan Turner (or Bazemore would've worked too if they still had him). So what you are saying doesn't make sense in that paragraph. No team wanted ET, just like no team would want Batum, yet a trade still got done because ET is an expiring and not really a burden for Minnesota.

You're also backwards on the next paragraph. If Whiteside signed a one year deal he'd have a no trade clause. If he signed a multi-year contract he wouldn't be an expiring contract. He also wouldn't be eligible to be traded until December 15th while Batum would be able to be traded all summer and through that date. Same with an MLE signing. Then you'd also have to factor in that what if it was a good signing and we didn't want to trade them?
