Guarantee our new owners will be doing the same.

They are rich. That's what they're going to do.
New Owner lives in Texas I believe...already a red state and a tax haven. Phil is a local with Oregon as his political target.

The GOP is gutting education so in my opinion, they don't get to play the literacy card...they actually want to discourage academia from American culture and the science it brings to education in favor of theological culture where one book is the constitution and one man is the "Lord" When the separation of church and state is gone, you've become the Taliban.

Sorry but I don’t buy the argument that this is a republican problem. Grades K thru 12 are funded primarily by local and state governments. Oregon is a blue state and has been for many years.

Yeah our ROI as a state is horrible.

Congratulations on not thinking
I’m sure you realize that Oregon has the 13th highest property tax in the nation and the 5th highest state income tax in the country. But the education problem in Oregon is all the republicans fault, right?

Link?

Oregon has the lowest sales tax.

I didn’t mention sales tax. I wish we had a sales tax and we got rid of state income tax.

Oregon spends $19,300 per student per year. That's top 15 in the United States.

I don't think spending is the problem in Oregon. Mississippi is at $13,000 per student and are tops on some of those charts.

Exactly. Many states have sales tax and income tax. Leaving out that oregon has no sales tax is misleading. Also, sales tax is punitive towards those with the least resources. However, sales tax is good for collecting tax when people visit as tourists. Too bad folks try to say nobody would visit oregon and/or portland because it sucks.

Your link about income tax is misleading too. The majority of Oregonians are going to pay 9%. The link you provided shares the highest tax rate someone can get to if they make over a certain amount.

Your link on property tax is based on figures from realtor.com. i'm not sure how they came up with their figures but I trust this website more in regards to taxes.

That lists Oregon with the 24th based on effective tax rate in 2023.

Maybe the problem isn't spending or teachers or anything like that. Maybe our children are just not very bright.

Actually I would counter that your property tax link is what is mid-leading. The ranking of 24th it shows is based on a percent of the home’s value. The more accurate representation is average amount paid imo. That is what my link shows. Homes on the West Coast cost more than most other places in the country.

Taiwan funds all of their national health care with a 6% sales tax and weekly drawing for a lottery to counter the sales tax....you save receipts and every Friday they announce winning numbers...their sales tax is extremely effective. Our education system goes beyond the public school system funding. Schools have different priorities with their funds...their are definitely sports heavy schools that don't emphasize literacy. The red counties in Oregon are famous for closing their local libraries which have summer reading programs due to lack of local votes. That hurts literacy in the state. Also we have a 10% population of non english speaking children entering our school systems similar to Calif, Hawaii, Washington and Nevada....these kids are playing catch up from day one....my son was one of those kids coming from 3rd grade public school in Taiwan to 3rd grade in Wilsonville....it's a shock for the kids but if you follow most of them, by the time high school is over, they often excell in academia. That's why the charts are not representative of the complexity of a large territory. Cell phones have also made spell check a part of culture and research the job of a robot. Time be a changin'! No matter where your political allegiances lie, you can't deny the Republican party has been pushing anti academia and science and defunded higher education as well as medical and scientific research. I want no part of that for my grandchildren in Oregon moving forward.

You understand that the West Coast (and East Coast) generally pays more in wages too right?

Effective Tax Rate: This is the average rate you pay on all your income. It is most useful for overall budgeting, financial planning, and understanding your true tax burden for the year.

Of course I do. Actual money spent is still more accurate in this scenario though.

I disagree.

If someone makes $30,000 a year because thats the average wages in that locality. If they pay 5% of their wages as property tax thats $1,500.

If someone makes $80,000 a year because thats the average wages in that locality. If they pay 5% of their wages as property tax thats $4,000.

Cost of living matters in determining cost and how much it affects someone's pocket book.

Thats why effective tax rate is important and more accurate.
