The GOP is gutting education so in my opinion, they don't get to play the literacy card...they actually want to discourage academia from American culture and the science it brings to education in favor of theological culture where one book is the constitution and one man is the "Lord" When the separation of church and state is gone, you've become the Taliban.

Exactly. Many states have sales tax and income tax. Leaving out that oregon has no sales tax is misleading. Also, sales tax is punitive towards those with the least resources. However, sales tax is good for collecting tax when people visit as tourists. Too bad folks try to say nobody would visit oregon and/or portland because it sucks.Link for income tax:

Actually I would counter that your property tax link is what is mid-leading. The ranking of 24th it shows is based on a percent of the home’s value. The more accurate representation is average amount paid imo. That is what my link shows. Homes on the West Coast cost more than most other places in the country.Exactly. Taiwan funds all of their national health care with a 6% sales tax and weekly drawing for a lottery to counter the sales tax....you save receipts and every Friday they announce winning numbers...their sales tax is extremely effective. Our education system goes beyond the public school system funding. Schools have different priorities with their funds...their are definitely sports heavy schools that don't emphasize literacy. The red counties in Oregon are famous for closing their local libraries which have summer reading programs due to lack of local votes. That hurts literacy in the state. Also we have a 10% population of non english speaking children entering our school systems similar to Calif, Hawaii, Washington and Nevada....these kids are playing catch up from day one....my son was one of those kids coming from 3rd grade public school in Taiwan to 3rd grade in Wilsonville....it's a shock for the kids but if you follow most of them, by the time high school is over, they often excell in academia. That's why the charts are not representative of the complexity of a large territory. Cell phones have also made spell check a part of culture and research the job of a robot. Time be a changin'! No matter where your political allegiances lie, you can't deny the Republican party has been pushing anti academia and science and defunded higher education as well as medical and scientific research. I want no part of that for my grandchildren in Oregon moving forward.
