Re: No more proof needed than this that McMillan is bordering on Anal Retentive insan

During the last road trip they had 12, 20, 12, 18, & 23 fastbreak points for an average of 17/game. So maybe they are trying to run more of late.

But I agree that it's a pretty unimportant statistic, at least as far as winning is concerned.

Well IMO I am just happy they are at least talking about forcing the pace. In the past, we couldn't even get that. They would mostly talk about minimizing mistakes. Now, we hear active talk about forcing the pace.

I wonder if part of the problem isn't.....conditioning...........:ohno:

Re: No more proof needed than this that McMillan is bordering on Anal Retentive insan

The Blazers have the second lowest turnover rate in the league. It's pretty obvious that this relates to pace. Obviously, Nate values low turnovers over pace. The team seems to be pushing the ball a little more frequently yet is keeping the turnover rate down. If this continues, I'd expect the pace to pick up. On the other hand, if turnovers increase, I'd expect Nate will tighten the reigns again. As long as the wins keep coming, I guess I don't really care.

Tince set you up and you bit "Hook, Line, and Sinker". Is it not obvious that this stat is meaningless in terms of winning?

"EPIC!"

Tince is obsessed with anti McDillon posters Mrs. Tince. If I misread his post and he "nailed me" then so be it. It doesn't change the fact that McDillon in my opinion is never going to get us where we want to go.

This team makes it very difficult for itself on the offensive end of the floor. The playoffs are going to even more difficult, and RM will do the same thing he did in last years playoffs.... nothing.

Re: No more proof needed than this that McMillan is bordering on Anal Retentive insan

It doesn't really sound amazing.

This post has be really confused.

Re: No more proof needed than this that McMillan is bordering on Anal Retentive insan

That is correct. Our team defense was very high ranked until Oden and Pryz went down. For some reason when two 7 footers go out who block a lot of shots, it effects that....

I think it was a bit more than that - Camby blocks many shots as well - but I do not think that he is as good a man defender as Joel or Oden are. He is more of a "weak side" shot blocker (which is still better than what we had before).

Again, I think it is very hard to argue against Nate regarding our defensive woes this year, our 3 best defenders on the team (Oden, Joel and Nic) all missed large chunks of the season.

Re: No more proof needed than this that McMillan is bordering on Anal Retentive insan

• Amazing as it sounds, Portland is on pace to rank last in the NBA in fastbreak points for the FOURTH STRAIGHT SEASON.

Nate.....take some chill pills.

I wonder if Nate has any of these other symptoms of Anal Retentiveness:

...he folds his dirty clothes before putting them in the hamper.

...he organizes his closet by color, season, and fabric.

...he requires no less than 200 threads per inch on his sheets...

...and they are tucked so tightly that he really could bounce a quarter on them.

...he has to have all boxes in the kitchen facing the same way and in order by size.

...he has all his canned goods organized by type, flavor, and use...

...and they're all facing the front.

...he alphabetizes his spices.

...he's on a "calorie-counting" diet and he counts the calories in the hot sauce on his "Big Beef Burrito Supreme."

...he collects the little postcards in magazine issues for recycling.

...all his books, CDs, and movies have to be in alphabetical order.

...he removes the tires to wash inside the wheel-wells of his vehicles.

...he flames every person who sent him email because the emails weren't spelled correctly or were grammatically incorrect.

...every e-mail reply that he sends has been through a grammar checker...

...and he corrects the original message.

...he actually bothered trying to convince someone that the 3rd millennium began on Jan 1, 2001.

The only thing I've read about Nate's personal habits outside of basketball is that he keeps his house meticulously neat and tidy.

He is also a big fan of soap operas.

What he said! Repped.

Fast break points dont equal wins... so who cares.

Re: No more proof needed than this that McMillan is bordering on Anal Retentive insan

Yes it's funner to watch but has been proven time and time again basic half court basketball wins games and titles. I'd rather win tbh.

No, it hasn't.

No strictly half-court team has ever won a title. Not a single one.

No strictly fast-break team has ever won a title either.

All Championship teams have used the full arsenal of weapons at their disposal, whether it's pace, roster depth, a hot hand, lockdown defense, intimidation, or flopping and whining when all else fails, adjusting from game to game depending on their opponent.

ALL Championship teams have had a coach who understands the need to do this.

Agreed...

e_blazers point was well thought out, as was yours about the correlation between fast break points and wins.

It's meaningless as an accurate measure of fast break points.

Some things are simply unmeasureable, but you know them when you see them.

Could you define this?

Re: No more proof needed than this that McMillan is bordering on Anal Retentive insan

I was being serious, but now I remember it was Maurice Cheeks and not Nate McMillan that was the soap opera fan. I remember him talking about it in an interview on the radio. He really likes Young and the Restless. http://www.usatoday.com/sports/basketball/2008-04-03-468437830_x.htm
Cheeks enjoyed himself after Thursday's practice. He shot a few jumpers, joked with reporters and impressed with his knowledge of the key plot points in "The Young and the Restless." That would be the daytime drama, of course, not has 20-something nucleus.
Kind of weird, huh?

Fast break points do not equal wins on their own any more than a strong half court game does.

It doesn't have to be either or and probably should be a nice balance mixed in with some unquantifiable intangibles, some good bench play, 47 lucky bounces a coach that knows his limits and hopefully his players abilities.

This whole idea that you can't have an eye ball opinion anymore because heart rate stats on players must be taken into consideration is just bullshit.

I 100% agree it doesn't have to be an either or.

Eye ball opinions are still very important, as long as they are taken in full perspective. This isn't a jab at you personally, but I've noticed a lot of people around here have the "grass is greener on the other side" view of things. They think most teams have a lot more sets than us and that we run only one or two plays. They think other teams run these awesome plays and are not the least bit predictable, but that simply isn't true either. Based on all the games I've logged, I would rank Portland in the top half for variety of sets. They are average or slightly above when it comes to predictability down the stretch. They are much better in the ball movement category than lots of teams (I'd guess top 7-8).

Nate is not a perfect coach, and perfect coaches don't exist. I still think he's one of the top coaches in the league and I have a hard time coming up with any feesable replacements for him that would be better. I wish we ran the ball more, I wish he coach get LMA to grow some stones down the stretch, I wish Nate could turn Bayless into a point guard.

Outside of Rick Adleman, the best coaches in the league are very stubborn and demanding their teams play the game their way. Phil Jackson, Jerry Solan, Greg Popovich, and even Mike D'Antoni (I know he shouldn't fall in this group) are total control freaks. Now the problem with being a control freak, is if you don't have the ear of your best player, you are done. I think Nate has Brandon's ear, and as long as Brandon is buying in, we have a chance to be very successful under Nate IMO.

Nor does Ronald McDillon and winning playoff series correlate.

Tell your husband I said hello Mrs. McDillon.

Fair enough.

I think you've done a good job of stating your position and think there's some truth in much of what you've written.

I as a non-believer however have not changed my mind. In short (and I could go on and on and on) my biggest gripe is that NM seems to not believe in/trust his players and I think sooner or later that will be his undoing.

I don't see a lot of "joy" or enthusiasm coming from the players this season. I think this is a major factor in Rudy's downfall and think his freewheeling spirit, which was his strength and made him who he was, has been crushed.

I don't like watching this team this year. I find it a chore and a tedious undertaking. In fact I usually just zone out until like the middle of the 3rd. I never get the feeling that if I'm not watching I'm going to miss something spectacular. Last year I did. Almost every game I did.

If they are going to play this SHIT style of basketball, they better fucking win a boatload of games doing it.

Finally my major issue, AND YES I UNDERSTAND THE INJURY PROBLEM is probably at least a minor factor in this... But I can't list a single player on this team that has become a better player this year than they were last year. Not a single one.

just a few things to chew on

Batum is WAY better. However, even being a pro-Nate guy, I would attribute most of that to his international play this summer and work with Monty after he came back.

I certainly think it was clear Greg was improved when healthy.

Overall, I think your beef with Nate that he doesn't develop talent is understandable.
