He's 3 years older. He's not a good outside shooter, which teams usually want out of their PG. Russel isn't a good defender, so being less bad doesn't really amount to much of anything, he still is a bad defender. He's a PG, versus Ant playing SG, so his assist #s should look higher, different roles. When Simons has played point this year with Dame out, he's shown to be about as good as a distributor. Russel is also an expiring contract, while Ant is locked in for 4 years. I don't believe many would view them as having comparable values, personally.
I think this summary just about covers anything I would have said myself. A couple other minor notes though:
- Simons still has some remaining untapped potential. No one would be surprised if his development continues and he becomes an even better player, or adds some new aspects to his game. I think we kind of know who Russel is at this stage of his career. I hesitate to call him a finished product, as vet savy is indeed a thing, but I think it is a mostly fitting descriptor.
- I'll take Simons' athleticism over Russel's any day.
