Oregon State Beavers 2025 (2 Viewers)

I get that Beaver fans are pissed off at Smith.

but as a Duck fan who watched the departure of Chip Kelly, Willie the-snake Taggart, and Manboobs Cristobal I can say there's no finesse way to break the contract and leave. No gentle exit. Glass will break as the door slams

there's less than a month until the first signing period for football players. Time was pressing and I'm sure MSU was pressing as well

Smith had no choice. I wish he could have stayed, but the Beavs simply don't have much to sell him on.

Bro had a built in excuse he didn't even need to talk about (the pac-12 disbanding and the uncertainty of next year and beyond, being relegated to a lesser conference) and EVERYONE would have understood: dudes leaving for stability and a paycheck. I can respect it.

But no. He said he thought about it for a long time. You ain't supposed to say that, man. Damn. Like I suppose you can say he thought about it a long time because of those built in excuses/reasons, but you don't actually say it.

C'mon, man!

Only thing that I really am questioning about sports and OSU is what will happen to the Baseball team? I see nothing left for Football at this point.

Every baseball home game and as many road games as possible need to be a sellout by Beaver fans during this final season of the Pac-12.

To me, like any employee there can be circumstances where you need to consider your own situation over a company. Doesn't mean you are self serving or lack loyalty. Companies and Institutions make changes all the time based on their situations w/o certain employee considerations.
He did the right thing for him and his fam.

We say this at work all the time. If I die tomorrow they will fill my position within a week.

100% he did.

And 100% truthful that he thought about it for a long time.

But you just don't actually say it lol

Smith played qb so he's always looking down field and reading defenses. He got this right.

So you can feel that way. Think it. Know it’s right along with everyone else but you just can’t say it.
Some might not agree and call that weak and dishonest.

"Don't say the quiet part out loud".

We all know WHY he left, but you never mention WHY you left.

I expected Smith would be gone and it might even be a mutual decision.

But that's pretty damning if he basically gave up before the civil war. I don't understand what advantage he got to do that instead of just working hard for 1 week then leaving.

Maybe after UW loss and the Beavs were eliminated from Pac12 title he just didn't care and had totally given up.

Don't see why you couldn't grind through a 6 day week to finish that out though. Lose most of my respect for Smith if this indeed is true.

Beavs were already screwed so this just seems even more upsetting, kicking someone who is down.

I just assumed Smith would say a lot of nice things and that he's very sad to go but has to head elsewhere. Really no benefit to leaving in this manner unless somehow he felt betrayed or he's just a sleezy guy.

I don't know?
Everyone who is coming down on Smith seems to not like the timing?
Not sure he had a choice in the timing and i'm pretty sure he simply wanted to be honest in the way he responded to questions. Fact is this was leaked and he was being confronted. He went to his players first and let them know the deal so they all didn't get blindsided.
With the state of the Pac 12 who honestly can blame a guy for making a sound career descision?

Oh and By the way I'm a Beaver Alum so If there is anyone who might have a sour taste It could be someone like me who attended and played sports at OSU.

I haven't seen anyone critical of the timing, if that's after the civil war. If it's before the civil war yeah the timing is a big problem, you don't discuss that in the locker room with the team while they are preparing to play games that you are still the coach of.

If asked about leaks you just say I haven't agreed to anything I'm focused on beating the Ducks and will worry about next season after our game. No reason to say your leaving before the civil war nor is there a reason to skip the normal game preparations. Coaches leave football teams all the time, but they don't do it a few days prior to the season ending. Just wait until the season ends and do it after.

Yeah there's still a bowl game but it's normal to have coaching changes between the end of the season and then. It's not normal to announce those changes to your team during the season.

I can.

I want coaches of college athletic teams to be fully committed to the team they are coaching through the end of the season in which they are coaching. Anyone who's unwilling to do that--unwilling to temporarily put their career aspirations aside for the benefit of the students they are allegedly leading, mentoring, etc--is demonstrating character that I would not want in my school's head coach.

As to whether or not he had a choice in the timing...any school that would diminish a potential coach's chances because said coach put the kids first is not a school at which a coach of any character should want to work.

Solid points.

Some things to consider but from where I'm sitting with very little to no perspective on what the conditions were or what was said this just seems a little presumptuous. It was being widely reported before the game had even started. Thinking he should have denied or played this off until after the game would have been obtuse at best.
