There are different kinds of busts. Those that can't play, those that destroy their own career and those that can't stay healthy. The first two deserve my scorn, the third doesn't.

Sure, he's a maggot for hitting a woman, but the hate for him here is based on the failure of his body to live up to our expectations.

Who says they hate him because he got injured?

This is an ignorant post. One that screams of someone making assumptions.

It's been Said time and time again. He chose to become an alcoholic. He chose to act aggressively towards a woman. He chose to shit all over my city once he left.

Fuck Greg oden with his giant dong for those reasons, not because he got injured and couldn't come back.

I don't put the sexting in the same category - that embarrassed him but really harmed nobody (IMO).

And no I did not look.

He should have stayed in portland. Hippie chicks are too high to have to punch.

Has anyone heard if he still has a tryout with the Clippers?

It's battery, and if it is just a misdemeanor, that's crap.
You're right about it being battery, not assault. According to TMZ: "Oden was taken to jail and booked for misdemeanor battery."

Why would it being a misdemeanor be crap?

If he was truly an alcoholic, then you should want to help him. It's a disease, not a choice.

I've already condemned him for hitting a woman.

He didn't shit on Portland. It wasn't for him. I used to live in the Midwest. Chicago wasn't for me and I still say unflattering things about it. Should I be charged with shitting on Chicago?

I get that you're hurt. You were just a boy when we drafted him. We get it; he broke your heart. Get over it.

The injuries seemed more genetic than anything.

The unsuccessful rehab(s) I blame as much on the Blazers training staff as Oden. Whoever thought it was a good idea for him to bulk up during his first rehab was an idiot. The LAST thing his fragile knees needed was even more weight to support.

Does anyone actually choose to become an alcoholic?

But, punching a woman is unforgivable in my book. Anyone who strikes someone out of anger is a coward, a bully and a piece of shit in my book - especially if the victim is physically smaller than the attacker. I'm a big guy and I absolutely abhor violence against women and children. Yeah, I know to some people that may sound sexist, and I agree all violence is wrong, but in general, and very specifically in this case, the men are much bigger than, and have a huge physical advantage over, the women and children they assault. Yeah, he's contrite and willing to accept responsibility for his actions. He's been charged with a misdemeanor, but I'd still like to see him do some jail time for his assault. Letting him off without jail time will just send the message to other men it's OK to use a woman as a punching bag as long as you say you're sorry. That's just wrong.

And yes, either during, or after, any jail time, the guy needs to get help before he does this again or worse yet, this behavior escalates.

Some people just liked to be fooled.

The signs were always there with Greg

He was out of shape in his draft workout
He didn't maintain his weight during his first rehab
2nd rehab he became an alcoholic and had to be dragged to the gym to workout
Left the games at halftime
Would leave to Indiana in the middle of the season and not follow the team
More alcohol

Leaves Portland and barely takes any blame, insults the city, makes more excuses

Punches a woman in the face, says he was just trying to get people off of him when he struck the victim.

This guy is so full of shit it makes me sick. He basically has a lackadaisical attitude about life and doesn't care about much. He just wants to collect paychecks and do nothing to actually earn his money and party.

He's the definition of a loser.

I would have said the same thing I said about Oden even if he played for the Utah Jazz and never played for the Blazers. He didn't just fail to meet expectations, he isn't even really capable of being an NBA player after being in the league for 6 years. He has played on average 17 games each season. He went from being the next Shaq to being DNP's in short order. The fail here is unfathomable, and then to punch a woman ( he admits it) ... it's just very pathetic.

You even gave him an extra season. Last year was his 7th since being drafted. I don't see any way he ever becomes a productive NBA player. He'll be an 8-year veteran next year, and he's played not even 2 full seasons worth of games.

You don't choose to be an alcoholic. You do choose whether or not to stay sober. You don't choose to get hurt. You do choose how dedicated you are to rehab.

IIRC his brother also derailed his athletic career at Arkansas because he loved partying over everything else. (got kicked off the team for multiple DUIs or some such)

Sorry, but I just don't buy the "innocent victim" storyline. There are too many unanswered questions surrounding the 2nd and 3rd MF surgeries. How many NBA players have had MF surgery? How many have been as unsuccessful as Oden?

Because in my mind, domestic assault should be a felony. It's egregious, it's inexcusable, and the penalty should be severe.

This is where Maxie starts singing kumbaya...

It's his god damn American right to hate anybody for any reason. You're the one who needs to get over it!

I have been a staunch supporter of Oden since he was cut from the team. However, I cannot excuse this incident.

I'm not sure that he's an "innocent victim' (in regards to his time in Portland), but saying that other players not struggling as much with their microfracture proves that Oden acted in bad faith during his rehab doesn't follow at all. There are always going to be players who recover more poorly than others from any given procedure due to the specific circumstances.

The alcoholism (if he actually drank enough to be considered an alcoholic) is more sad than proof of evil, IMO. Until this incident with punching a woman, I think the worst that Oden could be charged with was handling the terrible hand dealt to him less than ideally. To me, that's not a crime worth hatred or scorn.

This incident is deplorable, though. There's really no justification--bad turns of fortune don't entitle you to strike out at others.

Officers arrived to find his 24-year-old former girlfriend crying and lying across a bed holding her face, police said. A woman described her best friend told officers what happened.

"He punched her in the face," the best friend said, according to the report.

The former girlfriend initially was "uncooperative," police said.

The best friend, police said, told the woman: "There isn't that much love in the world. You need to tell that he punched you in the face."

Oden told police he dated the woman for about two years but broke up about two months ago, according to the report.

The names of the girlfriend and her best friend were redacted in the copy of the police report given to the media. The best friend, 25, is from Oregon, the report said.

One of Oden's relatives at the home was awakened by an argument involving Oden and the woman, police said.

Hahahahaha! Oden is really going to hate Oregon.

So Denny, if girl doesn't want to prosecute, should Oden be prosecuted?

I'm not Denny, but I'll answer anyway.

If, without her cooperation, the DA still has enough evidence to prove he hit her, then yes, they should absolutely prosecute. Her interest in seeing him punished (or lack thereof) has no bearing on whether or not he should be, IMO.

Denny and I got into a a debate about statutory rape. He feels if the parents don't want to prosecute (say some 45 yr old dude having sex with a 12 yr old) then the state should not prosecute.

I think they should prosecute in that case and in this case. Judge can always consider the victim's desires and concerns during the sentencing stage.

Well, I tend to side with you on this one. Crime is crime.
