None of that explains why someone has so much hate for the city of Seattle that the idea of rooting for any Seattle based team is incomprehensible. And, I'm not just talking about sports, but the city in its entirety. It seems to be a fairly common sentiment in Portland, which is what makes no sense to me. To me, Seattle is just a bigger Portland. Of course they have their differences (both good and bad), but fundamentally they are very similar. But back to the Seahawks vs 49ers, people like winners and I'm guessing that a lot of those Portland based 49ers fans (at least ones under 40) are so because of their success in the 80s and 90s (and the Seahawks lack of success).
About the M's, I have no clue where you are coming from there. I'm a year younger than you and EVERYONE in my little league loved the M's, even when they sucked. Of course there were a few Yankees fans, but most of my friends/teammates loved the Mariners (and not just Griffey).
Cool. I guess it was a different experience for you growing up in the Metro Area than it was for me. I knew maybe one or two people who were M's fans. I knew people that followed them, but they followed MLB in general, and were otherwise bigger fans of other teams (like myself - I followed the M's with Griffey and through some good years, but I wasn't a big enough fan to follow them through the garbage years, since I'm a Giants fan).
I'm sure there are Niners fans that hopped on the Niners bandwagon because they were good. But the Niners were also one of Portland's teams. Because my parents grew up in Portland, and the Niners were the closest team, they were Niners fans and I grew up in a Niners household. I imagine there are several people who grew up the same. Until Seattle moved to the NFC, the Niners were on TV every week. Hell, as I remember it, even the Niners got more press in the Oregonian than other teams not from Seattle. So, the Niners were just kinda thrown down people's throats. I'm sure that their success as one of the best franchises in the NFL for years, and the fact that they're on the West Coast helps with that.
Still to this day, I don't know that many people who are Hawks or M's fans that, one, are either bigger fans of other teams, or two, jumped on the bandwagon when their own team sucked and those franchises started succeeding. The proximity to Portland probably then helped them stay on those bandwagons. As I said in my earlier post, we're all bandwagoners in one way or another.
As for the City of Seattle.... It's always reminded me of a cross between Portland and San Francisco. I visit Seattle and SF 3-4 times/year, and I've broken it down, and that's my overall conclusion, but I'll spare you the details and analysis, as it gets a bit mundane.
As for Seattle hatred.... does Nate hate Seattle? I mean, I get not liking the teams. I suppose some people hate Seattle because of the "Portland is Seattle's little brother" mentality that gets thrown our way sometimes. But I don't run across a lot of people holding disdain for Seattle, just people tired of the "Portland is just a smaller Seattle" attitude.
