But he is right - you can't touch your own airball. Not on the playground. Not in high school. Not in college. Not in the NBA. Not if FIBA. That's traveling regardless of what league you're playing in.

Guys. None of you know what you're talking about. That is one of the most horrible misconceptions and non understood rules. You may so touch it if it is indeed a shot attempt.

Hey Mike SB, apparently you've never played in any legitimate league. Ask any high school/college ref. If it was a shot attempt, and it was an airball, it is not illegal to be the first to touch the basketball again. This has been one of the longest running myths of all time for basketball. I'm just trying to dispell it.

Wow! Any time I've ever played it's been considered a travel. How weird that - legally - it's not. That's fucking stupid - why doesn't everyone just "shoot" misses to themselves to gain positional advantage?

A: If a shot does not hit the rim or backboard, the shooter may not be the first player to touch it. If he does, a traveling violation will be called.
