Yup, and even if we let Bazemore, Whiteside, and Skal walk, we'd only have about $13M in cap space to make moves. Compare that to us simply being over the cap and having either a $6M MLE or a $10M MLE, combined with the other factors you stated here, and it makes no sense to pursue cap space.I've thought about the Otto Porter situation and I don't see why they should get only expirings. They have never been able to sign someone good in FA and there is nobody good anyway in 2020 FA. So the extra space won't be of any use really. If I was their GM I would just try keep him healthy and see what he can do next year as he has the potential to be a very good player, he just isn't able to stay healthy the last 12 months.
I'm in favor of trying to land upgrades that are on "bad" two year deals instead of one, because those guys may be gettable without trading additional assets (for example, Bazemore and filler for Otto Porter Jr).
If we did make that deal and Otto Porter Jr didn't pan out, then we'd have a large expiring next season to use in a win-now trade, which we'd likely be in much better position for, and in a trade market that may present better options than we have available this year. That's far better than letting our contracts expire then letting guys walk and trying to replace them with $12M which would result in us not being able to trade enough salary that we'd be willing to part with for anyone making $20M or more.
