Trade Idea Realistic trade options for summer of 2023

Brown has a lot of leverage right now. He is not a fan of being in Boston and he will be a free agent after next season. Many Celtic fans think he will be gone this summer. Rumors say Trae Young and Collins are the centerpieces in a trade for Brown and Smart. I assume the rumor is coming from fans, but I bet Atlanta will do whatever it takes to get him.
That feels like it makes a lot of sense for both teams.

I have long thought that Dame for Brown makes a lot of sense. The Celts get to pair Dame with Tatum and we get a guy who is still pretty young and just coming into his own.

If we got the second pick, it could make a lot of sense to draft Scoot, trade Dame for Brown, and then flip Simons/Nurk for another piece that fits the timeline.

I agree with those who said Brown only makes sense if we keep Dame. He will not resign without him. And yes I realize the chance of getting Brown without sending Dame to Boston is not good.

Brown is...26? The point of dealing Dame for him is that he's a legit all star who could potentially elevate to another tier if given an opportunity to be the #1 option, and would reset our timeline for contention around an Ant/Sharpe/Brown core without reducing our talent level.

Right, I get that argument, I just don't think that's the right approach to a Dame trade. The Blazers should trade Dame to rebuild slow and for the long term. If they are planning to win soon then keep Dame.

If trading Dame; the Blazers would also try to bottom out for a few years to improve their own picks while Ant/Shae develop their games as leaders of the offense. Brown may push those Blazer teams into the playoffs so their own picks become less valuable, plus he might get in the way of Ant/Shae development.

Brown will be 27 when the season start and if we're targeting 3-7+ year window then he'll be 30-34. No he isn't too old, but I'd say he's not on the ideal timeline.

The Blazers wouldn't receive as many picks back, or might even have to send out picks. Picks are like currency to a future winning team, so the rebuild would have less assets in a few years to pivot when they want to contend.

Browns supermax contract will limit the Blazers adding other talent or adding deadweight contracts to grab extra picks.

Finally Brown is unlikely to be happy with a longer term rebuild around Sharpe; so even if hypothetically he was accepting of becoming a Blazer initially when Dame left, its very likely he would ask out in the following years.

I'm not sure.... it would be his team and I think we could actually put enough talent around him to be a playoff team. It would depend on where our pick ends up, and what we could potentially get for Simons/Nurk. Can you imagine a scenario where we get Wemby, re-sign Grant, trade Dame for Brown and then package Nurk/Simons for another quality player.

??
Sharpe
Brown
Grant
Wemby

Or you keep Simons and let him play his natural position.

Simons
Sharpe
Brown
Grant
Wemby

That's an intriguing lineup.

I like it but Grant probably would not re-sign either if Dame was gone. I would love to get Brown, but he comes with a huge risk. I would still
make them an offer for him though, without Dame/SS being included.

We can offer Grant the most money, so if the team was still competitive even without Dame, I think he would consider staying. Not sure if we'd want to keep him though.

If we get Wemby how about just keep Dame?

Dame
Ant - Sharpe
Grant - MLE Free agent
Wemby
Nurk

Thats a pretty killer team. Or yes flip Ant+Nurk+picks for one of Brown/Siakam/etc.

I just don't see the point of adding Brown but losing Dame regardless of context. If we're trying to win now then keep Dame. Brown's too good for anything but winning now.

Normally I rank Sharpe as the most valuable Blazer since he is on a rookie contract, so young, and so much room to improve. But acquiring Brown plus another potential star in Wemby is one of the few scenarios along with Giannis where I might prefer to hold Dame and send out Sharpe.

Wouldn’t it be better for our future if we had both Wemby and Sharpe than a year or two with Wemby and Dame

I wouldn't look to trade Sharpe if we got Wemby, agreed they could be a great duo.

It was more of a strange tangent on a hypothetical if we have Jaylen Brown and Wemby with the rest of our roster; I might prefer Dame over Sharpe since the team could legit contend next season.

Wemby and Sharpe are not as certain as Giannis/Embiid/ and to a bit lesser extent Dame or Jaylen Brown. So if we can legit contend next year with a few of these superstars that would probably be the only type of situation I might listen to Sharpe trade ideas.

Jaylen Brown made one of the All NBA teams. Because of this, he is eligible for a super max deal. 5 years, 295 million dollars. Food for thought while discussing trading for him potentially.

You could only do that if you get an extension done with Brown.

You actually need Nurk, or another quality center because Victor plans to play more of a Kevin Durant type role.

Siakam played a lot of 5 for Toronto last season. I wouldn't mind having him as a C and Wemby at the 4. They are interchangeable. You wouldn't be able to leave anyone because your entire lineup can shoot really well. Also defensively? That would kill.

KAT has Jokic or Embiid first team All NBA upside to many people. That's something OG, Nurk, Ant, etc just don't have.

Now I'd say KAT has a lot of risk and night never fulfil it, so there could be a ton of risk it totally fails. But it has some potential to actually work, unlike the majority of realisticlly available trade targets.
All this Brown talk, and then KAT talk, I have to wonder if there's a scenario that exists in which the Blazers deal for both. Dame for Brown and Ant for KAT, with other pieces involved to make it make sense for everyone.

Jaylen is out the door regardless of what happens to Boston. The more I think about him joining Dame and Sharpe and Grant, the more I like it.

I am fearful that Atlanta ends up trying to trade Trae Young for Jalen Brown. There will be other teams trying for him and Siakam.

Brown will dictate where he plays next season. He's an all nba player who will be a UFA after next season and can sign a supermax extension. No one will spend what he's worth unless they know he's staying with them. I'm not saying he's coming here... just saying he'll get to choose where he goes if he goes anywhere.

Does this mean boston can offer him more than any other team? like more years and/or more $$ per year?

It’s possible, though I’ve always assumed that a Dame trade scenario involves lots of picks and young players and not trying to compete immediately.

I have as well, but then I wonder if that assumption is necessarily valid. I mean, if we can somehow reset our timeline to include multiple all-star players in their mid-twenties without sacrificing any of the lottery talent we already have, it seems like that could be a realistic shot at contention sooner rather than later. Let's say we get #2 and plan to draft Scoot, then arrange to deal Dame/Ant for Brown/KAT. How long would it take for a Scoot/Sharpe/Brown/Grant/KAT core to develop into something formidable?

I take your point—interesting idea. (Though I think KAT is the definition of a non-winning player.)

I don't see Dame and Ant being worth anywhere close to both Brown and KAT. Then there is the unlikeliness of Grant resigning, as well as Brown walking after a year. KAT might not fit with that group, as others say, maybe he is a non winning player. Scoot and Sharpe are way too young to be a backcourt of a contending team.

I still hold firm that it doesn't make sense to trade away Dame if the Blazers are trying to contend soon. He is worth more to the Blazers than other teams. We don't know that the players we'd receive in return after months of playing would actually be worth their cost.

All NBA
Brown is now eligible for a contract extension worth five years and $295 million

Not All NBA
Siakam will only be eligible for a max contract extension of four years, roughly $192.2

I believe this is the most their current teams can offer them. And due to bird rights, other teams can't offer as much.

Of course any player can choose to take less $$ to move to another team. And we don't know if their current team will offer them the max $ they are eligible for.

The point I wanna make is Brown just got more expensive. Maybe he is the better player, but Siakam may have better talent per dollar value

kind of surprising then that teams that have traded their franchise players in the past haven't turned around and been contending in 2-3 years, if this kind of template was actually available

I don't see Brown wanting to go to team full of infant's. Jalen Green already think's he's the cats meow. He's not. And we all know what players think of The owner Fertitties.

Simon's is not a PG. If Dame's gone, why would the Blazers re-sign Grant who's 28. Brown ain't gonna want to come to Portland without Dame here. Just silly.

The Tankathon happened because of an incomplete roster and major injuries. Both years. If the Blazers go , all Young, cause Dame wanted to be traded, get ready for a Tankathon reality till the cows come home.
