Electric Six - High Voltage

That video and the song itself is absolutely friggin' hilarious. The bass line is definitely not notable, but it doesn't ruin the song because it flows with everything else. They really turned up the bass and treble for this track and though it gets a bit repetitive towards the end I still found it fun and energetic enough to keep my attention. Nice recommendation.

New song is from Half Asleep - Un Quart

I discovered this band from Venus' recommendation. Also a Belgian band. They have a really natural sound, but are incredibly dark. They have some of the best lyrics I have ever heard. This song actually being the weakest of any of them by that account and is the most "radio friendly."

You can download their entire album for free here. Should be easy to navigate.

* Ok, video works now. Sorry about that.

I dig the Half Asleep song (unfortunately, I'm tired as hell at the moment and am half-asleep as a result of listening to such downtempo music). Love pretty much all ambient music, and I can see how Venus can be into them. They've got a similar vibe. Are they from Belgium as well? I'm youtubing some of their other less "radio friendly" stuff. Any names of songs I should check out?

As for Electric Six, I know the bassline isn't that great. I just love playing it in my car because I've got subs and they made the bass really loud and prominent on the song.

And yeah, Staley died of a speedball. It's incredible how many icons have died of speedballs: Layne Staley, Jim Morrison, Mitch Hedberg, John Belushi, River Phoenix, Chris Farley, Brent Mydland, and Hillel Slovak. I tried a speedball once in high school because I was having a really bad experience on coke and wanted to come down, and it was one of the most intense experiences that I've had in my life. I can see how they can become addicting. Anyway, on that note, here's my next recommendation: one of the young and potentially great Hillel Slovak's last songs. Funkiest Israeli ever! R.I.P. Slim...

"Just in case you never knew, I miss you slim. I love you too."

Here's the roster on that song:

Guitar - Hillel Slovak
Bass - Flea (RHCP, etc.)
Drums - Jack Irons (Pearl Jam, etc.)
Vocals - George Clinton (Parliament Funkadelic, etc.)
Vocals - Anthony Kiedis (RHCP; back when he'd just rap to the rhythm and not try to sing)
Back-up Vocals - Lynn Mabry, Sheila Horne, and Jeanette McGruder (Parliament Funkadelic)

Yeah, Venus are from Belgium. Well technically Marc, Christian and Pierre are. Jean-Marc is from France and worked with P.J. Harvey before joining Venus. However, I have some bad news for you ..

So that's the end of Venus. Four great albums, so I thank them very much!

Well, you can download Half Asleep's entire album for free as I mentioned above. The link is also provided. I put that video up from them because you won't find anything on Youtube.

Amazing performance. I haven't seen much of the older Chili's, with Slovak and Irons. I'm so infatuated with their stuff from Mother's Milk onwards. I know the Chili's were heavily inspired by Clinton and the PF, how many performances do they have together, Voodoo?

Anyways, Let me find a video...

Easily one of the best solo's I've ever heard, that was simply put...amazing. I can definitely see how Frusciante was inspired. I'm listening to it again and the link is going into my favorites.

The Doors are legends, and they're probably my favorite band outside of the Chili's, but this is also probably my least favorite song of theirs. I just think the organ line is too repetitive and the lyrics too trite for something from Morrison.

Awesome song, so emotional. Loved the outro, and she's amazingly beautiful.

That is some funky stuff right here, vintage RHCP, so full of energy. What I find amazing is how different Frusciante's style has become. He used to be heavily influenced by groups like the Ramones, the Clash, the Sex Pistols, the Germs, and most of all, early RHCP themselves. Basically, all the big punk groups of the day. Then as he got more and more into guys like Hendrix, Hazel, Bowie, etc. his style started to change dramatically.

New Song:

I love this trippy little ditty from the Doors -

The Soft Parade - The Doors: B

I liked it. Probably didn't love it, but I liked it. I found it funny, maybe because it's not really my kind of music. At first I was wondering "what the hell is going on?" but as I began to listen to it, it got better.

Tool's been around for quite a while, but I recently started to listen to their music, and this song is one of my favourites.
Tool - The Pot

That's one catchy ass bass, that's for sure.

B-, it's alright.

Invalid Video Link

One of the few rock songs I like.

I'll let someone else rate Three Days Grace, but I personally do not like them very much. Just another mainstream band that has been overexposed in Canada to me. A few catchy songs here and there, but nothing too spectacular or out of the norm for these guys when I'm listening to them. Just another band is what pops up in my head when I listen to 'em.

I shudder at the thought of Three Days Grace. I remember one time way back they tried saying BS that they were more original then dredg as a publicity stunt. I'll have to skip it too and let someone else who may like it a chance to see it.

Three Days Grade -

I pretty much echo everyone else's sentiments so far. They're really not musicians but rather a carefully marketed group of powerchord-playing novices geared towards emotionally frustrated tweens.

New Song:

Air - Alone in Kyoto

Beautiful. Though, songs like that to be really effective to me should be longer or at least reach a climax sooner. Great movie too.

Porcupine Tree - Arriving Somewhere But Not Here
Invalid Video Link

Ignore the backup vocals in the beginning of the video if for a minute. They sound horrible, I know. It's totally different on the album, where that voice is droned out by the music.

Amazing... saw a little Mr. Bungle in them... a lot of dredg. I think M might like thast band. I'm not really that up-to-date with the modern prog scene, so thanks for introducing me to these guys.

Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. That's one of the coolest things I've ever seen. Plus, it was at the Tabernacle, great venue. I did some research and Danny Carey (the drummer from Tool, and my idol) is supposedly really good friends with those guys. So here's hoping they jam together, specifically their kickasss drummer on the band's Triad song. It's happened with the drummer from Meshuggah, and Mike Patton before so anything is possible. *crosses fingers*

My next one is from the pioneers of psychadelic rock, Amon Dull II...
Invalid Video Link

A

I'm actually a big Amon D??l II fan. They were really one of the first psychedelic rock bands that was technically proficient as well as trippy. I really think they can be given some credit as a heavy influence in progressive rock and it's origins as well with the atypical dynamics of all of their songs. That was pretty new for the time period.

New song:

My Morning Jacket - One Big Holiday

(even if you don't rate this, Mamba, you gotta check it out, because the guitar in it is like a direct rip from Frusciante, so you might like it)

Invalid Video Link

B

It was good and I can definitely see the Johnny rip, I didn't watch the video and focused on the guitar and I def. felt that. Do you like the band? What are some good songs by them?

Let me find a song.

Fuel - Innocent

Invalid Video Link

D

I hate that guys voice. Just another alt-rock-angst band for me to ignore. The only thing I like by Fuel is their first record, and only about three or four songs off of that as well. Sorry, just not a big fan.

As for My Morning Jacket, here are some of my favorites by them, to go along with VC's...

I Needed It Most
At Dawn
I Will Be There When You Die
It Beats 4 U

Great band. Anyways, here's mine...

Collarbone - A

It was a funky little ditty, but the real reason I'm giving it an A is because of that video... love the concept and really didn't see it taking the twist it did when the army started slaughtering all the animals... very creative and funny.

New Song:

One of my alltime favorite bands... I know the video doesn't go with the psychedelic themed song, but oh well, that's Youtube for you...

Strawberry Alarm Clock - Birds In My Tree

Invalid Video Link

So now we're back to the ratings? lol

Strawberry Alarm Clock - Birds In My Tree - B

Nice simple tune. Good flowing instrumentation, not too long to drown it out like some bands that will take a beat like that and just go on and on. A little guitar pick up in there to send it off was appreciated. Another plus for me is the singer being very clear. I think the person who made the video got a little confused with the era in which that music actually comes from. lol

New song is from Girls in Hawaii - Casper

Invalid Video Link

Another Belgian band, good friends of Venus. Indie Pop with a dark tone.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">So now we're back to the ratings? lol</div>

Yeah, that didn't last very long.

Casper - B

Wow, their English is really good for a group from Belgium. I didn't like this song in particular that much, but they sounded like a band I'd like to hear more from. This song in particular just didn't strike a chord with me; I didn't pick up on any of the emotion of it at all for some reason, although I'm sure it's there for some people.

New Song:

Radiohead - There, there

I saw them do this song live, and it was the best song of their set. They're amazing musicians; one of my three or four favorite bands active today.

Well, I noticed most groups from Belgium speak near perfect English. A lot of bands and artists from that country are very unique. I just never noticed until I discovered Venus years ago.

Funny how that is, yet almost no one in America can speak fluent French, German, or Dutch.

I've been way too overexposed to Saliva, because they're from my town. I bet Sasha's heard his fill too. They were okay on their first album, but everything after that was just trash, and I see a few of their band members around here and there at parties, clubs, and whatnot (particularly Josey Scott and Paul Crosby), and they're all grade-A douchebags.

BTW - Legacy, could you please provide an explanation with your grades? We do it a bit differently from the hip-hop forum.

It seems you're into the harder, grungier rock, Legacy... are you into Pearl Jam at all?

Aight. I'll give an explanation next time. There are 4 rock songs that I have on my iPod: Three days Grace- Riot and Animal I have become, Papa Roach- To be Loved, and Saliva- Ladies and Gentlemen. Are these Alternative or Metal? I haven't heard of Pearl Jam.

Most of those songs are nu-metal.

Haven't heard of Pearl Jam? Ah, it sounds like you're missing out. Check out that song I just posted. It's live, but it's still ok quality. Better yet, check out this song if you've never heard of them -
