SWR - Tear You Apart: B

The video was cool, music was pretty good. The girl was pretty, as well.

RHCP - Sir Psycho Sexy

...There's a devil in my dick and some demons in my semen...

Damn, M, that's a hell of a song. I've heard that before too. So I was right, they are sampling monks? What a great idea.

Sir Psycho Sexy - A-

I used to love this song and the silliness of it, but I've just heard it so much that it's become gimmicky. Too many people listen to it as a joke than listen to it for its musical content, which is a shame, because it's brilliantly written. In a way, I wish Kiedis would have used less sexually provocative lyrics, but then again, that'd be kind of going against everything the band is. You've got to love Fru and Flea's "la la la la's" though.

Honestly, not sure what language she's singing (It says it's French on YouTube, but on the radio it said Italian), but it's still a romantic, beautiful song lyrics aside.

It was one of the few songs that I actually stopped to write down the name of when I heard it on the radio. I haven't done that in ages.

?milie Simon - D?sert - B+

The radio was wrong, but that's alright because both languages are Latin anyway. ?milie Simon is actually from somewhere around the H?rault region I think, check Wikipedia to be sure. I'm not as familiar with her as my fianc?e is. Anyway, she's a pretty good singer and her songs are usually unique. Like most French artists she excells at electronic music. This song in particular drifts in and out of simple pop electronic to darker intentions. That's why I like it. Is this actually on the radio in the US now??!!?

* new song is from M?m - Green Grass Of Tunnel

Oh how this will be bashed by likely anyone who rates it. No matter, I will always love the moody and untouchable experience that they bring. One of Iceland's best bands.

I doubt it's on the mainstream radio stations, but I've got a local sort of 'underground' electronica/hip-hop/soft rock station that I listen to at work every day, commercial free. When it came on I definitely took note. Even on such an off-beat station it was unique.

Yeah, I didn't think it would be on regular stations. I expected you to reply with XM radio or something like this. That's cool you found her though, she's pretty good.

Yeah, I find out about a lot of great musicians on satellite radio (particularly Sirius, although now that they're merging it's a mood point).

I really love all the downtempo electronica I've heard out of Europe so far, so much better than anything the Americas have produced. I first got into that whole scene through Air, but now I'm starting to get into bands like R?yksopp, Peace Orchestra, and Gotan Project as well and haven't been disappointed yet.

Yeah all of those artists are stellar. I also love Vitalic, the only house electronic musician that can create emotion through simplicity. The man is a genius. (French as well strangely enough) His main inspirations are Air and Daft Punk.

Don't know why you would think that --- I loved it. That's really the kind of music I'm starting to delve into at the moment, simplistic yet beautiful. I love the illustrations that went along with it as well, especially at the end with the northern lights. You're on a roll, bro'. Those last few recommendations of yours have really opened up a whole new avenue of music for me. Thanks.

New Song:

R?yksopp - Poor Leno

Invalid Video Link

Decent song with a great video.

Thanks, I'm glad you like the stuff so far. I didn't think anyone would like M?m because they fall into a similar catagory to fellow countrymen Sigur R?s and every video I've put up from them hasn't done well.

You ever heard of Tricky?

Oh man, Poor Leno, should I rate this or let someone else take it? lol

I don't think I've rated any of your Sigus R?s videos personally (not 100% positive though); I'll have to go back and check them out.

Tricky, as in the rapper? Yeah, I heard the stuff he did with Anthony Kiedis (who without RHCP is really useless) and John Frusciante. I really had a hard time getting into those songs in particular but never checked out his other stuff.

And oh yeah, rate it if you want... I take it you've got an opinion on it.
laugh.gif

Tricky has a lot of original work. One of my favorite artists. Check out "For Real" and "Poems" on Youtube if someone has put those two up. He often makes albums and songs with other artists. As for Sigur R?s, check out the video I posted on the very first page. Btw, how'd you like those V.A.S.T. videos I sent?

R?yksopp - Poor Leno - A-

I love this video, I find it hilarious and sad all at the same time. The music is so down played compared to most artists in the genre, but still gets you going anyway. R?yksopp have a way of doing that, but this song isn't even close to being my favorite off of the album. I absolutely love Eple. The only thing I never liked about Poor Leno is the voice synth, I feel it was overdone by Daft Punk already. That doesn't really hinder on the song though.

Next song is from dredg - Yatahaze / 90 Hour Sleep (Live)

Sorry for the wait! One of the best endings to any album, ever. Oh that eeriness again ..

dredg - Yatahaze / 90 Hour Sleep (Live): B+

I've never heard of those guys in my life, but damn that was a pretty song. I barely have the patience to go through 6 minute songs, but the song kept me listening throughout the entire thing, which only happens when I like what I'm hearing. Couldn't give it an A because there are a few parts of the song I didn't like (just me nitpicking I guess) but overall it was good stuff, especially considering this is a live recording.

Since I remember Voodoo mentioning Muse or something in the other page, I thought I'd throw in a Muse song.

I don't know about you guys, but just listening to this bass line gives me the heebie geebies.
Muse - Hyper Music

I love Muse's first album, but I wish they'd dwelve into something different now. Something that will be very inspiring like that first album was. They have a lot of talent to do so.

Muse - Hyper Music - B

Very nice introduction into a hectic pace for the genre. Done very well too. Nice little addition of a heavy guitar pause mute riff exiting the central verse. Always some nice vocal work, not my favorite singer though. The bass line was good, but I didn't get that haunting feeling like you did. I donno what you mean, perhaps you can explain that? That's ok though, the song was good.

M, that song was absolutely amazing. I really need to get some of their albums, I've loved everything you've posted.

I'm taking it you didn't want to post a song after the Muse one, so I'll go ahead and get one up...probably some older RHCP or something, I just watched their Live at Slane show.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - By the Way (with intro)
Invalid Video Link
Everybody and their mother knows the song, but I'm infatuated with the intro. Frusciante is a god. I love the emotion he pours into everything he does. He looks like Jesus so much, god I love that man. I can't thank Voodoo enough for turning me onto them. And soon, I won't be able to thank you enough for turning me onto Dredg.

Oh I'm sorry man, I was just commenting on Muse I wasn't rating the song I was actually letting you guys take it since I've been posting so many vids. lol

I'll just go ahead and rate it anyway, you keep your video up man.

Glad you liked the dredg stuff.

I also loved their first album along with Origin's of Symmetry, those two are my favourites, but I do agree that they haven't change that much. Black Holes and Relvelations didn't have that brooding dark tone to it but it still sounded pretty much the same.

Well, I didn't really mean that the bass line was haunting, I just thought that it kind of brought back memories of those old slasher films that used to scare the **** out of me because to me the bass was kind of reminicent of a chain saw.

Maybe it's just me, but I guess that's how I interpreted it to be.

Ben Folds -- Get Your Hands Off My Woman (Cover)
Can't find it on Youtube, so here's a download link.

I love that Frusciante into as well. He brings so much intensity right off the bat. I would have given my right arm to go to the show at Slane.

Get Your Hands Off My Woman - B

I'm not a huge Ben Folds fan (only into some of their stuff), but believe it or not, I actually have this song on my computer. His falsetto voice compliments certain parts of the song well, like when he sings, "I've got no right to lay claim to her frame, she's not my possession," but I really don't like the way they handled the chorus.

New Song:

Here's a simple song from the 1960's that's not complex or anything but is a fun tune either way. I was really into music like this in my 'hippie' days (back in HS and shortly thereafter).

The Grassroots - Live For Today

Invalid Video Link

The Grassroots - Live For Today - A

Simple compared to what is out now, sure I agree. But they are one of the inspirations to the creation of today's indie artists. I particularly love this song and always will, there really isn't much else I can write except that people today still learn something from this band. Whether that be as a fan of them or a fan of another band that sprung from their inspiration.

Next song is from AaRoN - U-Turn (Lili)

Invalid Video Link

Ok, another French band, alright? But the guy sings in perfect English. One of the best up-and-comers of this generation. They have so much influence already that when they made this song for a French film (excellent one too known as Je Vais Bien, Ne t'en Fais Pas) the creator changed the name of the girl in this film to Lili to go directly after the song.

I love the piano work, a lot of changing emotions and the climax is stellar.

AaRoN - A-

Are you sure that's not Chris Martin? Seriously, those guys sound strikingly similar, especially when you back their vocals with piano. I love it though. I'm not as big of a Coldplay fan as I used to be, but these guys have a slightly different vibe to them that I like; it's darker. And you were right, couldn't even tell English wasn't his first language.

As for the Grassroots, I love that song, but after I heard The Drifter's "I Count the Tears," I've never really viewed it the same way, seeing how it was written before "Live for Today."

Here's a sample of it (track #11). I couldn't find it on YouTube:

http://www.pandora.com/music/album/0b6cb97f482500fa

Anyway, for my actual recommendation, here's a song from another band from the late 60's that I've always been into, Ten Years After. My dad was actually good friends with Alvin Lee in the early 60's. He lived with him for a while before moving to Haight Ashbury.

I don't blame you at all. I used to love Coldplay. A Rush Of Blood To The Head was the first sign of them heading downhill after their stellar album Parachutes and the previous EPs which are simply brilliant. The only song that stood out on AROBTTH for me was Politik. Thankfully I've seen them live before they killed their image and (to me) their music. I was actually really deeply hurt by that because they were a huge influence for me.

AaRoN are defiitely more dark though and I love how they get into their music. You can see it already in the video quite a bit. I never heard Chris Martin in him until you pointed it out though. There is actually a band out there (can't remember the name though) and their singer sounds exactly 100% like Martin. Really freaky, I'll have to dig it up.

* No luck, I'll have to look tomorrow. You posting a new video, VC?

Yeah, Coldplay really has gotten progressively worse. I was disappointed with A Rush of Blood to the Head as well, except I liked a few more songs than just Politik, namely "Daylight" and the title song, "A Rush of Blood to the Head." I lost all interest in them shortly thereafter though.

I posted a new video, Ten Years After - "I'd Love to Change the World." It just took me a while, because I was looking for a full version of The Drifter's "I Count the Tears" for my recommendation but didn't have any luck.

Ten Years After - I'd Love To Change The World - A

Excellent music. That's also a nice solo near the end to go along with a trippy feeling throughout the entire track. I was listening to a lot of older music around the time I discovered Coldplay, dredg and Venus. Which ultimately was a great time in my life, obviously. Haha! Just to note though I definitely don't know as much of the older stuff as you do. That's for sure. I just picked up whatever good tunes there were and looked into the artists a bit afterward. That's awesome about your dad living with the guy though, did he tell you about any interesting moments about the time?

Also, thanks for the link to the clip. That was pretty cool I'll have to hear more.

Next song is from the Kaiser Chiefs - Oh My God

Invalid Video Link

I'd like to know your opinion on these guys. They make some crazy music. The lyrics are great. I absolutely love their first album. Their new one is different, but I'm getting into it.

A

I absolutely love that song. It's one of the songs I purposely play when I go on a road trip. Though, I haven't heard any of their other material.

Here's something from a band I've been digging lately, 65daysofstatic. They've easily become one of my favorite acts...

65daysofstatic - I Swallowed Hard, Like I Understood

B

They actually remind me musically of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, the band M posted about a while back. They also sound a lot like the Mercury Program, a trio out of Florida that does instrumental rock that sounds really similar. What's their story?

New Song:

Here's a song from a well-known song from a band that's often overrated by most of their pious fans but is generally underrated by the national media and described as "just another grunge band from the 90's." They weren't God's gift to music, but they wrote some of the greatest songs of the decade while Layne Staley was alive.

Alice in Chains - Would

Invalid Video Link

Alice in Chains - Would - B

I personally always hear arguments of Alice in Chains vs Nirvana. Nothing against Nirvana of course, but I've actually always liked Alice in Chains more. The song is pretty straight forward and this wasn't their best song, but it is nice to hear it after a few years. I love the ending most of all. Really a shame what happened Layne Staley. What did he die from again, Speedball?

Next song is from Sigur R?s - Gong

Invalid Video Link

I'm in the mood for their music so I decided to post a video. Not an official one, but the fan did a pretty good job I think. This is one of a few songs I can honestly admit that I cannot sing to, like many of their tracks. I can't hit certain notes, way too high.

Absolutely beautiful song, just not easy for some people to get into.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Crap VC you got to it first, lol. Ok, let me get to yours.</div>

Sorry, didn't mean to cut in front of you. When I got done listening to the song and posted a rating for it I had just seen that you were viewing the thread, otherwise I would have waited.

Ah, the infamous Sigur R?s, so this their sound? Wonderful falsetto voice on the lead singer; can't blame you for not being able to hit those notes, they're insanely high. Musically, they kinda remind me of Radiohead (maybe I should stop with the ridiculous comparisons in this thread, that's three in a row, lol), but the vocals definitely distinguish them. I'm going to search JBB to see some more of your posts on them --- can definitely see myself getting into this sound.

Man, this is just what this thread was intended for. Don't want to come off as an ass-kisser or anything like that, but these recommendations, mostly the European groups I've never heard of over here in the States, have opened up a new window of music to me.

BTW - Does anyone else want to drop the grading system and just go to a comment requirement instead? Maybe it's just me, but I think I'm personally being a bit inconsistent and have a hard time giving certain songs that are in completely different genres grades based on the same scale.

New Song:

Fun rock tune to dance to from an underrated band...

Electric Six - High Voltage (If you have good bass on your computer, turn it up!

)

Oh, and yeah, it's not a chick "singing" back-up vocals on this song, nor is it Jack White like some of my friends thought, haha. It's actually a male fan who won a contest to sing on the track.

Yeah, I think the grading system drop would be a good idea. Really, because it pisses some people off if their videos don't have high rates and that's understandable because we can't all agree on the same genres.

As for Sigur R?s. Sometimes they do remind me of Radiohead too. Could be why Radiohead have heaped so much praise for this band? Nah, even Metallica have praised Sigur R?s strange enough. I think it actually is the eerie approach to sounds and vocal work that make them compare to one another. Their best song though, Gl?s?li is simply mind-boggling for me. It is too much to take in sometimes, makes me cry because it is like a piece of art. The video is beautiful as well. I posted it on the first page.

Also glad to see you getting into a whole new set of music. We all do of course. Anyway let me know about the rating system change and then I'll comment on your video, man. I have great speakers so I'm set.

Metallica? Hmm... I used to love their stuff before they sold out and became total middle-aged douchebags... but you've got to respect their musical opinions, as each member is immensely talented in his own right.

And yeah, let's just drop the ratings.

The song I recommended doesn't have that great of a bassline, but for some reason the bass has always just stood out to me on it.
