Kidd has been mediocre at best, does dame want him for his ability, or just because he likes him?

I just feel the Becky Hammon thing is way too cliche. If she wasn’t a woman would she be bandied about? That’s a question I don’t think we know the answers to. Maybe when these open coaching slots open up we’ll see more if other teams are interested as much as the Portland fan base. Or I guess this board. I’m not saying she’s not a good candidate. I just feel because she’s a female people are gung ho Becky Hammon. Maybe she is the right candidate. But I want it to be because she’s a good coach. Not because she’s sits down when she pees.
She has been lead assistant to one of the NBA'S mist successful head coaches, coached summer league, also as a player was a winner in college, pros, Olympics. Is she was a man she would be considered a solid candidate for head coaching job.

My two cents on Kidd ... I also would have a problem supporting the organization if they hired him, based on both the domestic abuse and irresponsible drinking. The latter doesn't excuse the former, either; it makes it worse.

I've had a couple of very close female friends abused mentally and physically by their partners. I've also had a couple of friends' 18-year-old son pass out in a stream while drinking with his friends and drown (on my birthday, no less). These are two things that I don't take lightly. I'm all about rehabilitation and giving people chances to correct the error of their ways, but it doesn't sound like Kidd's really properly addressed his demons, and, truthfully, people don't take domestic abuse and alcohol abuse as seriously as I think they should, so it doesn't surprise me.

A bucks team coached by Jason Kidd: 44-38 (7th seed) A bucks team with no Jason Kidd the next season: 60-22 (1st seed) uh oh
Jason Kidd is the Midwestern Mark Jackson. Only without the TV catchphrases.

Just reading the tea leaves, but Woj is Neils mouthpiece, and Haynes is Dames. Earlier in the day Woj came out with the prospective names which didn’t include Kidd. Immediately after we got Dames public statements through Haynes endorsing Kidd.

We know Dame has a direct line to management. It’s likely he expressed his desire for Kidd and it wasn’t well received, which is why it went public through Haynes so he can put pressure on the FO. But the FO likely knows that Kidd is a bad hire. They just need to play the game the right way to not piss off Dame.
I'd like to believe that our FO is this competent. I'd LIKE to believe it

Kidd is a bad ticket sell and management knows that.

So - people who weren't impressed with Stotts are not entitled to an opinion on his replacement? An unusual and puzzling take on the situation.

You quote me saying "start a Fire Kidd thread now" and imply that means I think nobody is allowed to have a personal opinion on the matter? That's the real unusual and puzzling take.

I'm 100% ok with everyone having an opinion on anything basketball related on this board. In fact, I'm glad there are differing opinions around here; this place would suck if we all agreed.

Thoughts on Juwan Howard?
I think he would be great. Learned in the Miami system. Great demeanor. Appears to have great energy and works hard. Immediate success at college level. Doubt if he is interested in leaving Michigan.

Potentially similar to when Mark Jackson was ousted for Steve Kerr in Golden State and the turnaround they had as well. Coaching matters and Jason Kidd isn’t the right coach for this team at this time. However all of the coaches being considered carry some element of risk:
  • Chauncey Billups reportedly has a very high BBIQ but can he translate that knowledge to coaching? Is it too risky to hire a coach with zero head coaching experience?
  • Juwan Howard has been a successful coach at the collegiate level but will his style translate to the NBA?
  • Becky Hammon has learned under one of the true greats in Pop but the question still remains whether grown men would be comfortable being led by a woman in a league that’s almost universally male? What has she actually learned from Pop that she could translate as a HC?
  • Mike D’antoni has had some successful playoff runs with a number of teams but has never been able to get them over the hump and win a championship. Is his approach too similar to Stotts (all offense no defense)?
  • Jeff Van Gundy hasn’t coached a team in over a decade. Has the game passed him by?
  • Jason Kidd has been mediocre as a coach during his two previous stints as HC. Does anyone believe he will magically get better in Portland just because he has a good relationship with Dame? Maybe time to pair Dame with a coach that he doesn’t see as a friend and who will demand excellence and incorporate some accountability?
Not an easy decision for management as there’s a lot of variables to consider, not the least of which is trying to keep their superstar PG happy. I don’t envy Olshey because he has one chance to get this right. If he fails and picks the wrong coach, Dame is as good as gone. Will be interesting to see who is hired.

If the Blazers really want someone with experience they'd take a harder look at Jeff Van Gundy.

I'm intrigued by Mike D'Antoni not because I think he'll be better than Stotts (I'm not convinced anyone would be with this roster) but because I think Dame would average 40 with him as coach. And then we get a good return when, after winning MVP and missing the playoffs, he finally demands a trade.

Well maybe Boston will hire Kidd and that pressure off olshey to make Dame happy.

I wouldn't abject to Mike D'Antoni. His teams are fun to watch. The guy just hasn't been able to get it done in the playoffs. It would be a lot better than JKidd!

Could Steve Clifford enter the mix of candidates? He just got canned.
