Toronto is a good example of why we should stay the course

I'm not saying we don't need some changes, just that we don't need to blow it up. If we can improve the team with a trade we should do it.

That said, I would gladly trade Neil Olshey and Terry Stotts for Danny Ainge and Brad Stevens.

The people that advocate the status quo always suggest this in simplicity but never state what type of deal we should pursue.

Nobody's trading for Evan Turner and Meyers Leonard. There's not many realistic proposals that make us better...

Tradeable for what? Equal contracts, but how can we trade for good, equal contracts with no assets? Those contracts won't help us anymore with a year left than they are now.

"If we don't have that guy lined up"... We could hire Messina or Budenholzer right now... thats an improvement.
Tradeable for a guy who wants out. Or a team who wants to cut salary. See the Paul George deal. Stuff like that.

If those guys would take the job and if Lillard would be on board, and if Olshey and Paul saw eye to eye with them, etc. It might work out.

I wouldn't be opposed to that if it happened. But I also wouldn't go out of my way to make it happen right now. I just don't think it's necessary.

Not this year, no. There may be next year.

I'm not worried about it. We have assets. Aminu is tradeable and so is Harkless. We have the traded player exception.

There are plenty of guys out there who could help improve the team. I'm confident that Olshey will make a change and it will make us better.

The sky is not falling.

We agree on this. I think Messina would be an upgrade. Budenholzer also. My first choice would be Messina. Been plugging for him for a couple years now.
On the expiring contracts though i think they can maybe work some deals. You are probably better on the contract stuff than i am but it always seems teams are interested in expiring contracts.

There is some room to wiggle with the Mid level and both Harkless or Aminu. I'm not all in on doom and gloom until i see what Olshey does this summer.

They're interested in expiring because they're trying to dump bad salary (we shouldn't extend bad salary pay the next 2 years) or because they're trading a good piece and prefer expiring contracts along with whatever the main asset of the trade is. Teams are never looking to acquire expirings, usually they're trying to accomplish something and it's just preferred. So it's not a big factor.

Do you really expect to trade Harkless and Aminu for a sizeable upgrade? A low 1st round pick isnt going to make that difference.

The trade exception? Average role players are all we'll b3 able to add with that. If theyre above average were gonna have to give something else up, and we don't have much. We trade Harkless and his salary makes the TPE obsolete.

We're very limited.

People thought Mason Plumlee was untradeable and we traded him for Nurk.....I expect Olshey to find us an upgrade or two this off season as well

Wait... Why did people think he was untradeable? I dont remember that.

The Lakers definitely sought out expiring contracts last summer. They traded the #2 pick from a couple seasons prior just to get a big expiring and to dump another bad contract. Last summer if Leonard, Turner, and Harkless all had one year left on their deals instead of 3 the Pacers probably would've been more inclined to take them and our 3 picks for Paul George.

Having expiring contracts can always lead to getting assets like young players or picks for taking on bad contracts. If we had big enough expiring contracts right now the Knicks would probably take them right now if we took on Noah. The Hornets have a bunch of players they'd love to get rid of. The Bucks and Pistons have a lot of bad contracts.

There could be teams in the near future lining up to maximize cap space in 2019 and 2020. They could definitely be taken advantage of.

he can't shoot
I am going to have to agree with Strenuus on this. I can't think of more than 1 or 2 posts where someone thought Mase was untradeable. And those posts only thought he was because of what he brought in the lockeroom to us and not that other teams wouldn't want him.

I think a lot of people thought there was no way we'd get a 1st round pick for him but he was a legit big on a rookie expiring contract. There is always trade value for someone like that.

Now as for his brother Miles that is a completely different story. That guy was thought to have one of the most untradeable contracts in the NBA and he was traded twice last year, ha ha.

You missed my point entirely.

The Lakers were looking to dump bad salary (Mozgov) or trade similar salary for more years. I'm not sure there's any players that'll be on multiple year contracts that teams are willing to trade for an expiring contract that will actually be worth their pay. The team obviously doesn't want to pay them any longer. Those are the reasons why the want expirings, it's never just for the sake of acquiring expiring contracts. Usually they're giving back junk, which doesn't make our expirings all that valuable.

Do we really want more bad salary? Also, it's unlikely that there will be long-term bad salaries when they're expiring because most of the bad contracts in the league were signed in the summer of 2016 and that inflated summer caused a depressed market in the years aftwrward, which suppresses the inflated deals that we saw from 2016, leading to very few bad contracts having multiple years left on them in 2019-2020.

No, I don't want more bad salary. What I want is the good stuff that comes along with taking on salary! The 76ers got some good shit from the Kings for taking on some bad contracts. We got a 1st round pick for taking on Varejao. The Nets got Russell for taking on Mozgov.

There is the need to match salary as well. I have four examples for you (not that I'm saying these would have necessarily been good). A trade for Carmelo last summer would have been more likely if we had expiring contracts (NY could've held out and not dealt with the 3 teams Melo wanted). Expiring contracts and 3 1st round picks last summer would have been a lot more enticing for Indiana for Paul George. Mirotic might be a Blazer if we had a big enough expiring contract to include that was better for them to take on then Asik's contract with future money on it. If Blake Griffin becomes available in the future having big expiring contracts to get over $30 million to send back to Detroit to get them out of the last couple years of his mega deal might be nice for them.

The core of that deal would've been Melo and draft picks. The core of other deals is combining assets to dump bad salary, or simply getting out of the financial obligations of a contract (I.e. Griffin). Getting expirings are never the core of the deal. The ire the sweetener, or the facilitator. No team is looking to acquire expiring unless they're trying to accomplish something else. That makes them not valuable enough in themselves to acquire a huge difference maker, given the context of 2019-2020 compared to before.

We had the TPE that we could've acquired Mirotic with, so that logic is confusing.

The Bulls were well below the salary floor so taking back no salary wouldn't have saved them any money. It also wouldn't have helped us stay under the tax line which was a clear goal this year.

That trade still would be a pick for Mirotic with expirings helping facilitate.

We're very limited.

So if their aren't many options why would a good GM or coach want to come here right now? You can't have it both ways.

Honestly, a Hark or Aminu trade (when including a pick and/or possibly something netted with the traded player exception) could get us a nice player in return the same way we picked up Nurk with Plumlee.

Either way, there is no reason to drastically shake things up here for another year or two.

Either way, he wasn't a better contract or player than Mo.

Is that first question serious?...

Nurk was a wildcard whip nobody knew how good he could be. And even then, it was a very dumb trade on Denver's part at the time. The best we could get is a wildcard. We're not even able to land an Otto Porter Jr. / Khris Middleton level of player with that package.

There's no reason not to.

Wow I had no idea Paul Allen was rich!

Why didn't he just hire Phil Jackson or Pop before now? Heck maybe they don't know he's rich... Maybe RC Buford doesn't know... I think you're really on to something! Exciting times!:blazerwookie::smiley-195517897341:smiley-smiley-049::ghoti:

And I guarantee there are more wildcards like Nurk out there who will blow up in the right situation.

The reasons not to are numerous. We still have a young team. It's still talented. We're still getting better. We'll get better over the next few years just by gaining experience. We are one good piece away from contention. We have a TPE and a pick that we can trade for a good piece.

If the opportunity arises we are just that close. And I have no doubt that Olshey will try. None.

Heck, if Zach Collins blows up and averages 18pts per game next year that could be enough.

I didn't know those 3 were the only available candidates....

Maybe I am wrong, but I don't think we have any expiring contracts. We had some at the trade deadline, but chose not to use them in a trade.

Next year was the conversation. But Aminu is expiring this year. Following year is Turner, Harkless, and Leonard.

Any way you look at it the Blazers are not in a good spot right now and will not have much room to work for a couple years.

Which is why our best option right now is probably to stick with Olshey and let him see this through. They can easily target a couple years from now as a rebuild year if necessary and make sure new contracts will allow flexibility. If Olshey thinks the problem is coaching he can go out and hire a new coach... we aren't too far away. Just a couple good moves.
