I don’t know what GMs are thinking but I see some big contracts going to role players around the league.
Tobias Harris got $180 million for 5 years.
McCollum may not be an All Star as a Blazer but on the right team he could, and be as valuable as Harris or more so as a primary ball handler.

Good Whiteside is better than good Adams.
Not if he's not in a Blazer uniform.
Not if he's upset about coming off the bench (which he likely would be)

Plus there were other aspects of that trade that mattered. Adams expiring could be valuable.

I've been thinking about a Blake trade a lot

In the past three post-seasons Blake has missed 8/17 games

If Blake is healthy, he will make the Blazers better. He was healthy before the last 3yrs, so it's possible. But that is a big if

Others have mentioned his contract, it does seem like it would hamper the future

I 'd like to find better value at PF, someone who isn't injury prone and making $38,957,028 in 2021-22 when he's 33

Dame will be making about $43,750,000 that year and will be 31. $82,707,028 seems like a lot for 2 players. I would imagine they will be paying the repeaters tax. The cap will most likely be bigger, so it may not matter

They could always trade Blake if it doesn't work out. How will Griffin's value be at that point? Will getting his contract off the books and possibly picks be good enough? Is it even possible? I imagine we will have cap trouble regardless, unless we find a team that has cap space or expiring contracts

Also Nurkic has missed 19 out of 24 games

I don't like the odds that they are going to both be healthy come playoff time given the Blazers history with big men. If one is out, let alone 2, it does not bode well for this teams chance for a championship if they get rid of their depth

And if we are talking Love and Gallo, they aren't that close to Blake's talent. They would cost less, I may be wrong, but I don't think either is of them are getting the Blazers to the finals. Same problem too, older and injury prone

I'm not opposed to trading CJ and maybe Blake is the missing piece. Though I'd rather trade for younger players then BG, the window for success would be larger then

CJ hasn't missed a Playoff game since 2014 and that was a DNP, I believe. He is 2.5 years younger as well. Not that any of this has meant much before this year.

I am a little curious on how CJ will play without ET. He was at 4.3 ast the year before Turner was signed and has decreased each year. If you look up secondary assists he gets .6 a game, dame is at .8, Jamal Murry lead the league at 1.1. Potential assists CJ may have the lowest conversion rate on the team, 48.39%. That could be a number of things

How healthy someone is should have some weight into who will have a bigger impact come post-season. It's all guessing though

What I do know is summer of '21 will be a good free agent year. Obviously FA has not been a strong suit, but I'd like to find contracts that end then. At the least we have potential for a trade at the deadline for teams looking to shed salary. Could be a lot of good value at that point

Personally, I'd like to find a team who believes CJ is "all-star" talent who has been "stuck" deferring to Lillard and who thinks CJ would help them make that jump to the next level. I'd like to see what would happen if he was "the man" on his own team

Is Orlando's management still suspect? Could we squeeze two pick from them or 1 and a swap?

This could all be wishful thinking, but...

Orlando Trades:
Aaron Gordon to Portland
D.J. Augustin to Chicago
a pick or two
and possibly the rights to swap w/PDX in '21

Portland trades:
CJ to Orlando

Bazemore to Chicago
Trent to Chicago
PDX 2020 or later year pick and 1 from Orlando to Chi

Chicago trade:
Porter and Arcidiacono (or another PG, they have 4) to PDX

Lillard / Arcidiacono /
Hood / Simons /
Porter Jr. / Hezonja / Little
Gordon / Collins / Tolliver
Whiteside / Nurkic / Labissiere

I don't know how much that helps or if it's enough to get it done from our side

Chicago cuts a lot money, maybe AD opts out and wants to go home or they can hold onto the money for a year. Go after someone big

I read on an Orlando forum about a trade centered around Gordon for CJ. Gordon has a decreasing contract also,
$19,863,636, $18,136,364, $16,409,091. Aaron is still young at 24

I've like porter for a number of year, his contract ends in 2021 if he picks up his option

Both are good at corner 3's, AG 39.13% and OPj 43.24%. And though we would be well over the cap this year, next year we could be under

Unless they trade Whiteside at the deadline for whatever the need is. My 1st choice would be if Was. wants out of Beal's contract. If there were two picks from the CJ trade, our 2022 and the 2nd Orl pick may be enough. Could offer more if necessary. This seem pie in the sky though

Lillard / Arcidiacono
Beal / Simons /
Porter Jr. / Hood / Little
Gordon / Hezonja / Tolliver
Nurkic / Collins / Labissiere

That's a very tight 8, young with a big window. It's also some Trader Bob stuff, 2k if you will. Neil may not have the stomach for it, Dame either. Or it's not enough assets to get it done. Esp. the Beal portion

Then again maybe LA asks to be traded here, he makes a mil less and is partial guaranteed in 2021. It would be a little funny to trade him in '21, at least they'd finally get something back for him.

It also could be a trade of contracts equaling 21 mil or so. It would help them the most in Luxury Tax wise

Or Hassan finds a home much like Rodney and signs for less, realizing that playing less minutes will extend his career.

You never know, but It's fun to think about

tl:dr

Go Blazers

Man...if Neil could flip CJ, Baze and Whiteside (+ other assets) into Beal/Porter/Gordon, I'd start to work on his statue the next morning.

If Simons blows up and proves to be a CJ replacement, and Nurk comes back - would you do DeRozan + LMA for CJ + Whiteside?

:smiley-hmm:

Doesn't seem like the Spurs make out particularly well in that deal. Maybe add Little and a 1st...? Problem there is that with Derozen and Aldridge at the 3/4 spots, we have no outside shooting in the starting frontcourt.

The Spurs get the younger star to build around in CJ and a younger replacement for LMA - you basically restart the rebuild with existing star, younger anchor - otherwise, in 2 years they basically have to rebuild from scratch as their 2 stars are older. They get a way to extend Pop's tenure without going full rebuild.

Portland gets a contend now starting 5 - and while they lose CJ's shooting, Simons can in theory replace it. DeRozan will be a downgrade from the outside over Hood/Bazemore but LMA stretches the floor better than Whiteside.

Of course, you can also bring DeRozan from the 2nd unit - and run a Dame/Simons/Hood/LMA/Nurk with DeRozan, Baze, GT3, Skal, Zach on the 2nd unit.

Lets say Atlanta is a borderline playoff team (which I think they can be if Young, Collins, and Huerter all make a jump). What about this series of trades?

MIN Gets: Kent Bazemore, Mario Hezonja, Anthony Tolliver
POR Gets: Robert Covington, Gorgui Dieng

Why MIN Does It: They're reportedly looking for MAX cap space next summer. They save $27M next off-season which is almost worth a MAX slot. We helped them land a cheap possible replacement for Covington in Layman, which could benefit us in terms of good graces with Minny, and also help make Covington more gettable. We take on Dieng's contract to make this happen without picks.
Why POR Does It: We get our 3&D SF.

Then:

ATL Gets: Hassan Whiteside
OKC Gets: Gorgui Dieng, Jabari Parker, Allen Crabbe
POR Gets: Steven Adams, Patrick Patterson, Deonte Burton, Future ATL 2nd, $16.2M TPE (Dieng)

Why ATL Does It: Allen Crabbe has no value for them, so essentially it's swapping Jabari Parker for Hassan Whiteside. Jabari Parker doesn't have a role as a starter going forward, and ATL could use a starting caliber C. If they're making a possible playoff run, they'd definitely value one. Whiteside is a great fit defensively for Atlanta as well, as Atlanta is a defensively challenged team. Plus, they got shooters.
Why OKC Does It: They save $9M per year on an Adams for Dieng swap, which allows them to take on Jabari Parker. Parker would have the chance to immediately start for OKC (assuming they trade Gallo) and would fit their timeline moving forward. They'd likely need to save money in trades elsewhere to make this happen.
Why POR Does It: First off, Whiteside matches all incoming salary by himself which allows Portland to throw Dieng into the deal. Adams would be much more likely7 to accept a backup role behind Nurkic than Whiteside is, and Adams isn't really a downgrade. Plus, he'd be a $25M expiring contract headed into the off-season. With Adams and RoCo being added, we'd be a noticeably better team, and we'd have much more flexibility to make trades happen with the $25M expiring contract of Adams and the $16.2M TPE. Allen Crabbe's $18M contract got traded for the 17th pick and a 2020 first last summer so the TPE might allow us to do something similar for an expiring contract. We could then use the picks we got along with Adams for a Blake Griffin or Otto Porter Jr. type of player. Or we could keep Adams and use the TPE to get a player that could help.

This trade could be done without Dieng which would save OKC a lot of money, and therefore Portland could probably get a 1st round pick from OKC:
ATL Gets: Hassan Whiteside
OKC Gets: Jabari Parker, Allen Crabbe, Future ATL 2nd
POR Gets: Steven Adams, Patrick Patterson, Deonte Burton, 2020 DEN 1st (via OKC)

Portland would then have a $25M expiring, a $17M expiring, and all their picks plus an additional first to make moves that summer, and they'd have a better roster than they do now.

Either way, this would be a creative way to multiply assets.
I like your idea for getting Covington. What if Minnesota asked for Little in the trade instead of Hezonjia?

If Simons blows up and proves to be a CJ replacement, and Nurk comes back - would you do DeRozan + LMA for CJ + Whiteside?
I'd rather go after a lower usage player than Derozan if we're gonna pair him with Dame/Simons/Aldridge.

CJ for RoCo/Culver/Dieng. Get your starting 3 and your future 3. We take on $6 in salary this year although we can add a few of our minimum contracts to reduce the amount we take on. I offer this in a situation where Simons shows significant promise. Dieng extends one year beyond this season, allowing you to let you to let Whiteside walk. He comes off the books in the year that Dame starts his supermax, and you'll still have Covington at ~12M in that season, as well as Culver on his rookie scale.

what??????????? that's terrible value for us!!!!!!! NO WAY I'D DO THIS!

Aldridge is nearly 35, DeRozan is an overrated chucker

CJ alone has more value than those two combined.

Having two guys at non-center positions that cant shoot next to Dame would be a nightmare.

No Aldridge ugh.

+1

I appreciate Dame mending fences with LA, but I personally don't see how his game fits Portland's system. Last time I checked he liked the ball in isolation for long 2's. How does that work with ball movement and 3 point shooting?

POR: Gallo

MIA: CP3, Trent Jr

OKC: Dragic, Bazemore, Winslow

I think it makes sense for all 3 teams.

Would the clippers trade Paul George for CJ?

I doubt it, and I don't even think he'd be a good fit here. He seems to be such at Type B personality who comes up small in big moments.

Say what you want about CJ, but he's risen to the occasion several times when we've needed him, too. He doesn't shy away from the spotlight, for good or bad.

And even if by some miracle the Clippers would do that trade, the Blazers would have to throw something good in. They'd even become less deep.

If the Blazers are trading CJ at this point, they need to get back a couple of solid rotation players.

Looking for teams who are underperforming to make change.

Philly's at the top of the list. But I have no interest in that Harris contract, and Brand just said they aren't trading Ben.

Denver might want to do something.

New Orleans might want to expedite their development.

Pacers facing a big decision with Oladipo's upcoming FA next year.

Nets might have a bit of a logjam with Kyrie/KD returning.

Gotta see what happens to the Clips/Rockets. Those teams are usually pretty volatile and have huge expectations.

Outside the playoffs, teams I think will make good trade partners:

Chicago -- I want Porter Jr.
Cleveland -- that payroll is ridiculous for their team, but they have no one I want.
Sacramento -- Buddy Hield and Bogdanovic need some resolution, and new GM.
Atlanta-- they have a wing factory with all these young guys. Huerter and Hunter might be at the top of my list if they ever become available.
