Because "no comment" or keeping mum only adds fuel to the fire. His fellow Kentuckians (along with other right wing voters) have made it pretty damn clear they are more supportive of Trump than they are of him. It's in his best interests to appear to be in lockstep with Trump. He has every reason to lie, if indeed his relationship with Trump is in a shitty place. Just because it came out of his mouth doesn't necessarily make it so. I like the NYT source because it fits MY narrative. See what I did there?
If he's angry, he's angry. He gets to play the high road by saying no comment.
Sure, you can have any narrative you want. But it's only going to convince people willing to be deluded by nothing reflecting the Truth.
