Who's the 15th man?

First guy I'd cut is Connoughton. Dude is just one of those guys that can't shoot during a game. I'm sure he's a lot better in practice, but we've now seen him in 2 summer leagues and spot minutes during the season and his percentages are really bad. And he doesn't make up for that anywhere else.

Who actually thinks Steisman is going to make the team? Journeymen big men like him are a dime a dozen. And the Blazers have ample big men. They are going to keep someone that has some upside, not a 31 year old space-taker-upper.

15th man is going to Montero. Jerrett doesn't bring anything to the table we don't already have. He's going to be behind Aminu, Harkless, Davis; Leonard, Vonleh and probably Layman as well. Stiensma also has no role being behind Plumlee, Ezeli, Davis and Leonard. Pat and Layman are on guaranteed contracts this year and regardless of what the Armchair Collective thinks he seems to be in Stotts' good graces. Of the 4 going after 1 spot, Quarterman, Stiensma, Jerrett and Montero, only Montero shows flashes of having special skills. Yeah in the end it might be a failed experiment, but a we are talking about the 15th spot on the roster if that roster spot is ever a factor then the season is lost anyway.

I gave you a like, not because of cutting Vonleh, but reminded me that im going to cut him if I go with this. LOL.

Honestly, either him or Layman should be in the D league this year.

Ill swap him with Laymen.

Thanks for the heads up!

Layman is good enough to be in an NBA rotation imo, he's just stuck on a deep team. Good problem to have however.

I don't know much about him, but if he can shoot and cover the perimeter, he might bring something to the table we don't have. Right now the only one on your PF list who can shoot is Leonard, but at 7'1", he is more of a center because he can't guard stretch 4's.

Aminu, Davis, and Harkless are not "great shooters". I was hoping Vonleh could be the guy. Jerrett is 6'10" and over 230 with a 7'2" wingspan and a 9'1" standing reach.

Here is what Draft Express said about him coming out of college:

"Moving from statistics into game film, it is clear is that Jerrett is, first and foremost, a jump shooter and a very good one at that. At 6'10 and as a freshman, he distinguished himself as one of the truly elite perimeter shooters in all of college basketball"

Maybe we keep him, hope he develops and use Vonleh as part of a possible trade package at the break.........

Eventually i would like to see Montero,Pat and Meyers gone. Layman and Vonleh still has 1 or 2 years of grace ,but i'm expecting the first 3 dudes to make room for people with actual potential.

ummm were not releasing a guy we just handed 40 mil to and is one of the best 7' shooters in the league.

Yeah if he goes anywhere it will be for an even better shooting big. Whether we like Meyers or not, this current roster lacks outside shooters. Right now we have 18 guys and I would only consider Dame, CJ, and Crabbe good outside shooters. (Possibly Napier, but how much will he play?) Meyers is the next best shooter we have. There are times in the game where we will need him.

I am liking our improved defense with our wings. (Harkless, Aminu, and ET) But even though Aminu had a decent 3 pt percentage last year, I think we still need either Layman, Jerrett, or Vonleh to also emerge. And I am not too confident one will.

We are going to need Meyers to stay healthy.

Exactly. And Ill take that a step further. I'm concerned about Aminu. I think he has false confidence in his three because of the playoffs last year. He was 0-5 in the first preseason game. He took more three's than anyone else on the roster. This is not his game and not what we need him to do. He should be our lock down D guy and he should be cutting to the hoop with the bal;l and dishing to one of our guards on the perimeter for a three if his lane gets cut off, not shooting threes. I don't mind one here or there, but he should definitely not be shooting more threes than Dame, CJ, Crabbe and Leonard when he is back. This will hurt us big time if he thinks he is a three point shooter now. If anyone showed a weak game in the first preseason, it was him.
With that said, it just makes Leonard that much more valuable. As soon as he is back, i'm sure Stotts will pull the reigns on Aminu's outside shooting.

he didn't say release.

I know he didn't, but the thread title is who will be our 15th guy, meaning the others are not making the roster, and he never mentioned anything about trading down the road, so I can only assume he means he wants these guys off the roster asap? Im being a bit snarky this early AM though cause im on vaca, lol.
My point being is Leonard isn't going anywhere, either by releasing or trading. Mark my words. He is one of NO's guys, we just signed him to a good contract for both sides and he has a unique skill that is very hard to replace. Like him or not, he may never become a star, but he has the game to be a great role player on a championship caliber team, if used right and I believe Stotts will use him right.
Leonard is here for the duration... people should come to accept this. :)

Thanks for hanging out with us while you're on vacation!

I marked your words.

We forumites like to have fun at Meyers' expense but most of us believe that he is improving and will be a valuable player. He will get better at D, he seems like a bright guy, and if he gets any kind of go-to post move to go with the outside game then he will be a great role player. Oh, and love the hair.

I said "Eventually". Meyers will be out within the next 2-3 years (unless he'll improve dramatically), Neil is smart enough to see he's not championship material.

Is the 15th spot a battle between Jerrett, Montero, Quarterman and Steimsma?

Seems to me, Napier has secured himself a spot, and it would be between Jerrett, Montero, Quarterman and young Chris Kaman.

Realistically, at least, imho, it's between Jerrett and Montero. I'm assuming it'll be based more on practices and the growth they show during training camp, because i doubt either will get much of a chance to really shine in the pre-season (yes I know Jerrett already had a solid game).

w/o queston Napier's in:ygrin: Between Jerrett & Montero (they are both 23), I think we'll keep Montero because of his upside (Jerrett's probably close to his ceiling) & because he's familiar w/ the system/culture/our guys; currently I think we could use Jerrett a little more but when the reg. season is here, either 1 we keep won't play many minutes anyway so the 15th spot used on potential is where I think the organization's going w/ this spot. The FO can afford to gamble/it'd be more in their/the team's best interest to have/develop a more attractive asset in Montero for several reasons:wink:

ps like I said before though, if we could lose Connie (ESPECIALLY IF it came down to him or Montero)... I'd be fine w/ that & I'd rather have Jarrett over Connie too. It's early but I think I've seen enough from Connie.

I think it going be Montero just because we got plenty of people that can play the 4 position. I believe Jerrett has out play Montero but the above reason hurts Jerrett chances.

Was it at all significant that Montero didn't play at all last night? I haven't heard anything about him being injured.

Some random observations. Jerrett reminds me of Wayne Cooper. Not sure why, probably his long ass arms.

Napier reminds me of Jerryd Bayless, but not with T-Rex arms or the jumping.

2nd preseason game:
Montero, Quarterman DNP
Jerrett 0-3, 1 rebound, 1 block, 1 foul, 2 pts. in 9 minutes
Stiemsma 0-0, 1 rebound, 1 foul, 0 pts. in 7 minutes

nondescript performances, really, so, I've still got

Jerrett > Montero >> Stiemsma > Quarterman

There is also a possibility that they cut all 4. Intriguing prospects may become available, such as... RJ Hunter:

what are the odds of any of these guys becoming d league affiliated players assigned by the team? can't we assign up to 4 players in addition to the 15 roster spots if those waived players choose the d league over europe?

I think we end the season with 14 if we start with 15.

I hope some of the guys earn bonuses. If those would put us over the LT, #15 must go.

Otherwise, I don't think it matters who is #15.
