I hated that trade at the time. It was stupid.
 
As far as Han Sen, I said during the Summer League hype that real NBA players were going to make him look like a fool. So, not surprised at all. I think he has a chance to become a decent backup in a few years. At least I hope so.
 
I'm crossing my fingers and toes and praying to the Flying Spaghetti Monster in the sky that the draft pick we got with him strikes gold.

I don't know if you're kidding but Hansen should be there and get some time with GO one on one afterward. GO really played smart basketball both during his one year at Ohio State and then the limited time he had here. Especially on defense it wasn't just his athleticism, he was always in the right spot to take advantage of his size on D. Hansen needs all of that.

No thanks on a Big who doesn't defend as I prefer to root for a winner. For me the one that got away was my draft crush of 2021 Jalen Duren. He's been crushing it on both ends for one of the best teams in the league & will be an All Star at the ripe old age of 22. Detroit attainied him by flipping the pick PDX sent them for Jerami... sigh. Just to relive the "what if" pain prior to last night's game I went through the All Things Jalen Duren thread made in the lead up to that draft... lots of good posters with a pulse with some unbelievably terrible takes there.

As far as Yang not hitting the ground running, management certainly knew he wasn't likely to play much this year and any fan pointing to this year's lack of production from him as some sort of proof he's a bad pick is just being silly.

I can't recall exactly what Detroit took on, but they had to take on a bad contract or two to get Duren. They paid a price.

This. I really really really wanted the Blazers to make a move and get Duren. I was in borderline disbelief that they didn't. I hope they at least tried.

How is all that defense working out with Yang? There's no reason why Queen can't necessarily improve in the defense. People used to say the same about Sengun and he's fine. I'm not even suggesting we should have kept him, but of the available talent he was the one with the highest upside which remains true now. Either drafting him or trading him to the Pels for their first would have been the way to go, with the latter being my preference.

I have always liked Duren as well and wish we could have found a way to draft him. I don't believe we had any cap space to take Walker. Per usual, our front office stays right up to the line despite not being a competitor for so long.

Kind of an intellectually dishonest argument. Yang was drafted on his potential. Queen is high-floor, low-ceiling.

These things are not the same, and it's not appropriate to try to present them as such.

Yeah, I don't think we can teach foot speed. So I think he could become a playable backup but in today's NBA he will always be able to be played off the floor by teams putting a 5 out lineup on the floor.

Hasn't that kind of been proven by now to be a false narrative? What team doesn't start a traditional big or play one the majority of most games? There only are a couple of teams that might fit that blueprint. The Warriors are one, if you don't count Horford as a traditional big, and we've beaten them all three times we've played them with three traditional bigs and Duop Reath, who is a liability on defense.

It still -- and always -- has come down to efficiencies. The narrative about the five out neglects that those five still have to play defense. Sure, if they make 33% of their 3s, it matches a team shooting 50% of its 2s. But if that five-out offensive unit is giving up buckets on 55-60% of its defensive turns because it can't defend inside or gives up offensive rebounds and multiple scoring opportunities that end up resulting in points, then all that 3-point shooting advantage is negated. The five-out offensive narrative ignores the defensive end and that sometimes some of that perimeter play gets played off the court. It's just a matter of what team imposes its style of play better than the other. Otherwise, every team would try to be the Warriors.

They're all drafted on potential in the first round. You act like Queen is a whole decade older than Yang.

A bunch of people think this and it seems to be said way too often. You absolutely can teach foot speed and you can improve agility.
There is no question that foot speed can be improved. You combine that with other types of player development like knowing where to be at the right time and strength conditioning and it makes a world of difference.
Machine guns, ladder drills and 30/30's will help as well as a number of different cone drills will improve foot speed. It's just all about how hard the player want s to work.

Can add diet to that.

Eating foods that provide more energy and stamina will at least to some level increase speed and ability to maintain it.

Also, basketball IQ, understanding pace, angles and timing, while not improving foot speed, can at least to an extent mitigate deficiencies there.

Foot speed is one of the more difficult qualities to improve significantly, but it can be improved.

To aquire Duren the Pistons took on Kemba Walker's expiring contract sending out the Bucks 2025 future 1st Portland had dealt them earlier that offseason in exchange for Grant.

Yesterday Duren reupped for 200M over 5 years

Yang is improving, granted there was no way to go but up. He has to get aggressive and , dare I say, a bit meaner. He wants to make his teammates better via playmaking which ain’t a bad thing

He has to work on a lot of things this first year in the US but for hoops mostly he needs to physically mature/work on his body & get used to the faster pace of the game with bigger/stronger players.

Saying all that I have, I still like Yang and he can effect the game. I like what he did last night. But all the hopes we have in him, seems like Queen already does those things at a really high level. The only main thing you would hope Yang to be better than Queen at is rim protecting and defense in theory. Queen is already incredibly high level with his shooting efficiency, his ball handling and great passing. I haven't seen the early defensive numbers on Queen but it sounds like he's been adequate at least. I could be wrong. Interesting to see the defensive stats.
