This or some iteration of it is the only reason for us to go after Gasol.

Here's what I would do:

POR in: Davis/Gasol/Moore
POR out: CJ/Nurk/ET/Collins/Aminu/ 2019 1st

NO in: CJ/ Nurk/ 2019 POR 1st
NO out: Davis/Moore

MEM in: ET/Aminu/Collins
MEM out: Gasol

We'd be left with:

Dame/Moore/Moe/Davis/Gasol
with Curry/Nik/Layman/Leonard off the bench. Fuck it and sign Melo.

The 'Gasol rumor' reeks of a leak from Olshey to let people know he tried but when nothing/little happens, he can replay the interview he has given the last couple of years.

"Look, it take two teams to make a deal. We tried but there wasn't anything out there that fit what we were looking for. You have to bifurcate what you want with what you can give up and in the end, it just didn't add up."

wouldnt he want to put something out about a wing? Going after a Center that literally couldnt play any other position seems strange...

I have a question, how many here would say yes to the trade if NO called and said they would give us
Davis/Bad Contract for CJ/Nurk?

Depends on the odds we could resign Davis.
Less than 35% - NO
35%-70% - MAYBE
70% and higher - YES

I say yes instantly. It would kill me to deal Nurk but if we still had our pick we could pretty easily make a trade to fill out the roster like Leonard, Stauskas, and a 1st for Dedmon and Prince or make a run at Vucevic, something like that. We could be players in the buyout market too.

Then this summer you hope guys want to come here to team up with Dame and AD.

Agreed. It's probably an overpay, but I'll trust that anyone who really wants to win, when they get with dame, will stick around.
If not, well, we weren't getting a title in the next 2 years with the current core

Not just "No", but "Hell No". Nurk is pretty healthy, Davis is always hurt and missing games, and when he bolts in a year, we'd have no starting PF, and no starting Center.

Giving up Nurk for Davis would be the worst thing imaginable. The only way I could see it working is if we got a 3 or 4 year commitment from Davis, and was able to sign a All-Star-caliber Center as well. And I don't see that happening, short of a Davis/Gasol trade.

I don't include Nurk in any deal, sorry. It's stupid. Nurk gets better every year, and loves Portland. Davis may end up loving us, but he most likely would bolt. All for acquiring him, but no Dame or Nurk.
Davis is a perennial MVP candidate. The formula to consistently compete for a title is having at least two top 15 players. Dame and AD would give us two in the top 10-- both were first team all NBA last year. It is a championship duo in their primes. Nurkic's ceiling is maybe that of an all star reserve if things fall his way. This should be a no-brainer.

AD will not bolt to play with a 36 yr old Lebron in 2020-- this narrative needs to die.

You need more than Dame and Davis. You NEED Nurk to compete.

Otherwise, if you think 2 All Stars are going to beat GS's 4 or 5 in the WCF........

Dame and AD this year.

Dame and AD + 3 massive expiring contracts to work with in trades next year (ET @ 18 mil, Moe and Leonard @ 10 ). And if we just end up letting these expire, we have Dame + space for 2 max contracts in 2020. AD will not leave after playing with Dame.

No one is saying this is the finished product, but it's an incredible start.

I still say "No" to trading Nurk. How many other Centers in the league are going to put up a historic 5x5 this season whom are available in FA/Trade without a king's ransom?

AD?

The man is a generational talent who is averaging 29/13 and has a 31 PER.

.........and who's going to be our PF? Chief?

Play Davis at PF, Nurk at Center, and Chief/Layman/Moe at SF.

Dame
Davis
Nurk
Aminu
Layman/Moe/Curry

THAT is a contending team.

Of course Dame/Davis with Nurk is preferable. But if the choice is Dame/CJ/Nurk or Dame/Davis, and you can only have one or the other, I think you take your chances with AD.

Exactly.

Nurk should not hinder us from landing a guy of AD's caliber. You can find a guy around Nurk's talent with the expiring contracts we have next season.

Then let's make sure the choice doesn't come to that. Offer CJ, Turner, Collins, and two or three 1st round picks. That is likely the best offer that New Orleans is going to receive from anyone.

Really? Who exactly? Who is going to be available at his talent level or better under the age of 30 for less than $13M/year? And keep in mind: he's having the best season of his career, and is a borderline All Star at 24. It's very possible he makes 2nd Team All NBA next year, and/or the All Star team.

Throwing Nurk into a deal where there is a good possibility that Davis leaves would be suicide, IMO. We'd be a 30 win team at best after Davis left.
