He'd take Cleveland over Portland if that was the case. I love Dame but we'd have to make a WCF for AD to even consider us.

As for AD re-signing, yeah, it’d take us having success to re-sign him. That’s what I said. Dunno if it’d be a WCF Finals appearance, but we’d need to at least make the second round. And if we can’t advance further with a healthy Dame and AD, then what is the point of paying AD?

I'm talking as areas of interest, if both teams were in the same boat. I love Portland but it's considered Boringville, USA by most of the league. Esp to athletes with millions of dollars in their accounts. When you draft them and overpay players like we do... that kind of changes things.

As for resigning AD.... yeah, let's just get him first.

It is. But it’s not Cleveland. We’re a cut above (unless LbJ goes back, and even then, it’s a hard sell for folks).

Lebron chose to go back to Cleveland. Ha ha. I doubt we could even get Kevin Love to come home to Portland as a free agent.

I have it on record direct from multiple current Cavs. Ain’t no interest in Cleveland unless, one, LBJ comes back, two, they are using Cavs to get paid.

Portland is actually pretty well-liked with players, more than you’d think. The consensus is that we’re pretty much always the bridesmaid, though.

And Love won’t come back cuz, as I said, he’s getting paid. He’s got a ring. Only way he comes back is if we make a terrible decision to acquire him.

I already know how Portland is thought of. You only need to look at back at every year since like 1988 to see that.

Cousins - No chance
KD - Unlikely

I think Cousins might return to Sacremento now that they have legitimate talent. KD will go to New York.
 
My "realistic" hope:
POR Gets: Otto Porter Jr, Ian Mahinmi
WAS Gets: Meyers Leonard, Evan Turner, Seth Curry, 2019 & 2021 POR 1sts
SAC Gets: Maurice Harkless

Washington gets a good backup guard in Curry (they need one, Satoransky can be the backup SF behind Ariza), a much needed upgrade at backup C (Howard is hurt and all they have is Bryant and Mahinmi. Also get two picks and get below the tax line.

Sacremento gets a much needed SF for a 2nd round pick.

Then Portland signs Wesley Matthews

Man I’d kill to see this. So much firepower and so much defensive ability, we’d be so deep and have a lot of variety that would make doubling Dame a non factor.

I doubt Sacramento would be interested in Harkless. Too injury prone and they could make a much better use of their cap space. Plenty of wings available in the Summer who are better than him and will sign for $8million or less.
 
A Moe for Skal Labissiere swap gets us out of the tax btw. I wonder if this Hood deal allows Neil to dump contracts.

IMO, Olshey wasn't going to re-sign Matthews, even if Wes hadn't torn his Achilles. Once Aldridge decided to leave, that was the end of that team; and Olshey wanted to clear the SG deck for CJ...that's clear as a bell

besides that, Olshey didn't know how Matthews was going to be after that injury. He just knew what the history of that injury was for NBA players. But just about every basketball fan knew that.

He still didn't give Wes a contract. If I'm going to bash him for contracts he did give. I'm going to be fair with the ones he didn't. Wes was a popular player at the time.

fine...but that isn't what you said. You gave Olshey credit for magically peering into the future and seeing what Matthews was going to be after his Achilles injury, and implied that "vision" was why he didn't re-sign Matthews. As I said, I think Olshey was going to let Matthews walk with, or without, the injury because of CJ. If Aldridge had stayed, Olshey might have brought back Lopez, and maybe wouldn't have traded Batum. But Olshey was going to make sure CJ was the starting SG the next season....IMO

if you're giving Olshey credit for contracts he didn't give, no matter the reason, then you need to note the contracts he tried to give, and failed, and what they would have meant: Roy Hibbert, Enes Kanter (although that was just fucking with OKC), Spenser Hawes, Greg Monroe, and Chandler Parsons. Olshey showed his lack of restraint and judgment before his 2016 disaster

If Olshey can pull off a move like that to get under the tax line without giving up a 1st I'd be impressed.

Until he gets traded, I'm still holding out a sliver of hope for Anthony Davis.

Interestingly enough, none of those players became Blazers, which implies there was a market greater than the Blazers for each of those players.

And most people are up in arms over how restrained Olshey is and how he isn't willing to take risks.

Also, Roy Hibbert was an all star and almost helped the Pacers take out LeBron. People were ready to throw silly money at McGee, Dalembert in those days. At least Olshey tries to make impact moves at some level.

Didn't he also land CP3?

Also you'd be furious with every GM based on contracts they have offered and werent accepted or moves they made that were poor in retrospect.

How's Haywards contract lookin?
Brandon Bass?
Big Baby?
Drafting JR Giddens?
Jeff Green?

I think we can agree Ainge is a fantastic GM. But if you cherry pick data you can make him seem incompetent too.

I dunno, I just don't buy it. If Olshey were already convinced that CJ was starting quality, why would he have made the trade for Afflalo? Seems unlikely to me that he would have spent a first-round pick for a rental on a backup if he already believed he had a starter at the same position.

Once Wes was hurt, then sure, it was time to reset. But had he remained healthy, I think the expectation was that CJ would fill that supersub role many think he would be best suited for.

From the Lowe Post today with Arnovitz: Some takeaways that might be relevant for us.

- Otto Porter is not nearly as available as has been mentioned in the media.

- Clippers will lose their lotto pick (to BOS) if they make the playoffs this year. Tobias Harris will be a hot commodity in July this summer for a bunch of teams, so why shouldn't they try to get a haul for Harris at the deadline now? They should be sellers and get back in the draft. (I'd sniff around with Harris if I were Olshey, especially since we can get his bird rights). Clips have shut down all talks so far about Harris so far. Utah has been a suitor for him.

- The Rodney Hood deal has set the current standard for a contributing wing on an expiring contract: two future seconds.

- Orlando is in a similar dilemma with Vucevic as the Clips are with Harris.

- Aaron Gordon could be a great piece in the right role. He needs to get away from thinking he is a wing like PG or lead guy like Lebron, but rather like a Draymond who can playmake and set great screens, finish and defend. He is "not a Portland kind of player, but Portland should still look at him."
