As big of an MC Skat Kat fan as I am, I'm going to have to disagree with you, and possibly never trust your opinions on anything ever again.
I understand that it's an unpopular opinion, and I likely won't change any minds. But he really is not good at rapping. He might be a good writer (if he doesn't use a ghost writer), but his physical ability to rap sucks. Clunkiest MFer I've ever heard...and can't even clunk with style like Kool Keith.

But people will like what they're told to like. They will think something is great if enough others tell them it's great - Sizzle Pie just won "Best Portland Pizza" for fuck's sake! Lies become true through repetition and familiarity. People thought LA was a great jump shooter because people SAID he was. People thought McMuffin was a good defensive coach because the media said he was. And people think Jay-Z is a good rapper because record labels shoved him down our throats so they could make money.

You simply don't know what you're talking about.

I truly don't agree.

I'm going to throw race into it.
:bwpopcorn::bwpopcorn::bwpopcorn::bwpopcorn::bwpopcorn::bwpopcorn::bwpopcorn::bwpopcorn::bwpopcorn::bwpopcorn:

I know a lot of white people who don't believe jayz to be all that talented. While I find it the opposite for black people.
Personally I like a couple of his songs, but music isn't really my thing.
Well unless it's an orchestra. I know I'm lame.

I know. I only know two people who agree with me. But I challenge you - listen to ALL your rap albums and find someone who raps worse than Jay-Z. Rhythmically he's the least creative MC out there and can't maintain any flow. It sounds like he's constantly about to start stumbling over his words or he never developed breath control.

Yeah i'm not a big jay-z fan. I liked his stuff when i was like 10. Some people more talented that don't get the exposure or reputation Jay does.

Dude I've already done your challenge. You're wrong.

So what's so special about any of this? Basic. Pick any Nas song and Nas raps better.

Nas is in my top 5. So is Jay. Comparing legend to legend becomes about preference but Yes, Nas has always been better. So what?

And it is different to everyone. Nas is a better rapper, but I connect more with J's flow. It's all subjective.

During that 22 2's song, he even has a line about changing his style every 2 rhymes, so isn't it possible that what you see as "not maintaining flow" is actually his intentional variation in delivery?

* this question comes from someone who is admittedly not a hip-hop fan and had never listened to a Jay-Z track prior to today.

Okay, to be fair, you never said Jay-Z was the best rapper - but that is current popular opinion. I'm mostly arguing against him being the BEST...but I am also arguing against him being good. Some of that is personal preference - I think his voice sucks. But a lot of it is just lack of originality - you can't be good if all you do is re-hash what was done by your predecessors, and you can't even do it better than them let alone as well as them. Rakim was doing that shit better AND 10 years earlier! Sadat X has far more style. And Biggie slays them all. Every member of Wu Tang is a better rapper. Shit, Nicki Minaj is a better rapper! So far I'm just sticking to NYC mainstream rappers.

There are ways to change rhythm and time signatures without throwing off the flow. I love music that changes time signatures.

This is not and has never been popular opinion.

This is a load. What does this even mean? It's like @blue9 just made that term up.

You've never listened to music and suddenly been thrown off by a change that doesn't really work? There's generally a flow to a song - rap or not - and you can change the rhythm without fucking up the flow of the song. If you ever go out to local shows on a weeknight you're bound to encounter examples of this being done poorly...and that's how a good portion of Jay-Z's rap sounds to me.

Again - I'm all for changing time signatures, or just some pause-filled rap verses. But I don't think Jay-Z does it well. Kool Keith - that guy was/is the master of pauses and herky jerky rapping!

I think you are injecting opinion.

OH GOD! WHAT HAVE I DONE?!

note to self, bring up paula abdul at next gathering.
Or you could just play this....

So it's at least a little modern but still has some Paula Abdul flavor.

Speaking of J.Cole, i like him more than Jay-Z.

To be sure - music/art is always subjective. But there have to be some objective truths in art. It's also perfectly fine to like something that's objectively bad, or to dislike something objectively good.

De gustibus non est disputandum.

Someone should make a top rapper thread. I just looked at a top 50 list and I like most of them over Jay-Z. I don't get why some people like Lil Wayne so much too. Some of his stuff is catchy but he is terrible.

He was at one point the best rapper alive. Listen to the Dedication 2 before kodine destroyed his brain that man had bars.
