Just curious; anyone remember who fired Nate?
Paul Allen and Larry Miller, and tangentially, Chad Buchanan. We were 20-23 at the time. We also traded Camby's contract and Gerald Wallace (in the greatest trade in franchise history) on the same day. Landmark day for the franchise.

In a news conference Thursday night, Miller said the decision to make the changes was “unavoidable.”

Miller said, “The moves that we made … today really set us up for this summer with the draft and with free agency, to really be able to move in the direction that we want to move in and make this team better.”
...

“That’s hard to come back from, but we feel we’ve set a course,” acting general manager Chad Buchanan said. “Obviously LaMarcus Aldridge is an All-Star player in our league. We’ve got a lot of room to spend this summer. We’ve got some really attractive draft picks. We feel good about the direction we’re setting ourselves with.”
...

“Some tough trades today & letting Nate go but had to face reality of how the season was going,” Allen tweeted. “Now (the Blazers are) focusing on future.”

Thanks for looking that up. So they fired KP first and then Nate not too much later. I was just wondering how KP and Nate got back together if KP had fired him, but this explains it.

Right.

And KP's unceremonious firing on the draft day prior to Nate's ouster was brutal. He did get his revenge with the Babbitt pick, tho.

There are fans who are calling for sweeping changes. Do you think the roster needs tweaking or significant changes?

“The same people that wanted sweeping changes last year?”

(Questioner responds: I don't know. I don't know them personally. I just hear from them all the time)

"Right. Great. Well, last year was going to take sweeping changes because we got swept by Golden State in the first round and all the alarmists overreacted.
.
.
.
"But this idea that (we need) sweeping changes. Where were all these people that wanted sweeping changes 10 days ago? Where were they? They were the ones bouncing off the walls in the Moda Center when we got the third seed .
.
.
.
Relative to people back in December who were complaining that we weren't going to make the playoffs and we were in purgatory because we weren't going to make the playoffs and we weren't going to pick high enough. Right? That was the rallying cry. Then it was, 'Oh my God. They're going to blow the third seed because they're going to lose all these games. They're not even going to get home court advantage.' They overreacted to that.”

Man, the disdain this guy has for the fans in Portland. He thinks we are all beneath him. I will never forget that exit interview.
Does anyone else find it ironic that NO made 'sweeping changes' to the team after making it to the conference finals? Especially after giving this gem of a quote...

Not to mention Elliot Williams and Armon Johnson. (not laughing)

if Jody Allen is ok with paying 34M in luxury tax over two years, she'd very likely be ok with eating 5-7M of Stotts dead salary
First of all, his extension has to be more than $5-7 million. He's probably getting close to $5 million per season and there are still multiple years left.

Second of all, Olshey doesn't seem like the type that would want to put himself in the position of having to explain to Jody why she should pay out all that money to fire Stotts just months after Olshey convinced her to give him that extension. It wouldn't look good for his job status either.

This is GM 101 right here. Even if it would be smart to fire Stotts, Olshey would have a hard time explaining it to Jody. She would probably be surprised by the suggestion since the idea itself is only being suggested by local fans on social media. Nobody nationally or in the local media think Stotts should be fired.

I've actually heard some national guys starting to question the coaching but even if there weren't having the built in injury excuse for both of them not doing their job correctly this season definitely buys them time no matter what the results are.

I meant, but didn't add the per year

and my assumption is that it would be the owner wanting the coach fired

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that no media member has question if Stotts is doing a great job, just that not one has said Portland needs to get a new coach.

Whether its all because of the injuries, or the injuries have nothing to do with it, or anywhere in the middle, the injuries will buy Stotts and NO at least this season and probably next season too. I wouldnt be shocked if Jody is unaware the teams struggling this year.

What would firing Olshey accomplish? Would it mean half the rotation returns healthy? If you’re gonna fire anyone, fire Stotts. As it’s been mentioned already though, he’s most likely safe too. The injuries make it a pretty safe bet.

If firing Olshey wouldn't make half the rotation healthy, I don't think firing Stotts would either.

just because half the rotation is out doesn’t mean it’s ok that they’re losing to teams like the warriors and Knicks. That’s more on Stotts than Olshey.

Fair enough. The best coach in the world gets this team to the 6th seed. When you look at what Olshey did from an addition/subtraction standpoint this off-season , you can't say that was a top quality job either.

You fire Olshey because he took a 53 win team that was progressing into a 56+ win team, and turned it into a ~43 win team with garbage offseason moves. This will become more apparent when we get healthy and still aren’t very good. I expect alternate excuses will still abound.

No team with Dame, CJ, Melo and Whiteside should be as bad as we are. It's a testament to just how truly stupid I am.

why would you think that? She has been to games at the Moda Center this year and this was her brothers team.

Completely agree. Great post!

So? My brother had a lot of interests that I didn't share, and his passing didn't all of a sudden make more interested in those things.

lol, and if your brother owned a business and willed it to you, you wouldn;t care how it was operating? C'mon TBF, be realistic. If you have some sort of proof then fine, but to just throw out wild unsupported allegations is akin to a women's knitting club sitting around gossiping about the local hussy.

I would think that if my brother's passing bequeathed billion+ dollar assets to my care, I would immediately become very interested in those things, even if I hadn't been previously.

Blazers have highest payroll in NBA at $148 mil, which is $9 mil above the next highest payroll... if you take away Nurk, Collins, and Hood, the Blazers still have the 13th highest payroll in NBA for a team that is 7 games under .500. Neil is stealing the fans money, while him, Stotts, and CJ are getting paid and drinking wine together... that’s why you fire Neil.

The Blazers are a pretty small part of what he willed to her. She was willed a bunch of his projects and businesses there is no proof the Blazers are a big deal to her. It's like maybe 10% of what she got.
edit: Oh and she has already sold off a few of his "interests". So guess she was seriously interested in that stuff too.

I'm just saying I wouldn't be at all surprised if she doesn't care nearly as much as we do. If she said, "I didn't know how bad it is basketball-wise", would that really shock you guys?

That business is worth less than 10% of what she got in her will, 1.6B she's worth 20b+ So come on don't act like the PTB's are a huge deal to her just because it's a big deal to us. If you have 2m worth of business interests, you might care about the one that's worth 160k, but it's not going to be a huge priority for you.

Nobody said anything about them being "a big deal". Simply worthy of attention/interest. And even when considering multi-billion dollar enterprise, 10% is pretty significant. Yes, there's no "proof" that she "cares" about the team, but it is more reasonable than not to assume that she is aware of its status and performance.
