Free Agent Thread

I have not heard anyone outside of the few on the board and Neil who think Portland is in a good place. It's sinking in; its for real. This is the team.

Only hearing how the Pels, Wolves, and Portland had the poorest free agency. Simply did not improve the roster. Who did worse is debatable. Given that Portland has a loyal top 5 player who wants help, I think the answer is clear.

Milwaukee just won the title, and nobody went ring chasing there this year.
True, but the catalyst to their run was the Jrue Holiday trade. For the Blazer , I still think a trade is possible involving CJ, that could be the spark.

Someone should probably bump the "Chauncy Billups - New Portland Head Coach" thread, because it's looking like that will be the only major changes we see before the start of the season. What a disappointing off season.

This is another time I wouldn’t give away a first round pick. Too valuable. Does Thad Young “move the needle”? Portland needs to collect firsts not give them away unless it puts them over the top
IMO, that question would need to be directed to Dame. If he doesn't view Thad as an acquisition that might make him interested in staying, then you don't waste your time.

But also, the naysayers who wanted Dame to be dealt elsewhere, aren't going to say nice things anyways. They're butthurt for being wrong. Even if a quality deal for say, Siakam or Harris does happen, they still will say, "It's still not enough. But they don't know. They aren't any better than us at prognosticating what's gonna happen. They just get paid(lucky them, hard work in some cases too) to talk loud, and get noticed.

It ain't over yet. There's still time to get deals done, and make trades. Or did i miss something. Is the season starting next week. Damn, we gotta schedule that Fantasy Draft.

Giannis is a more dominant player than Dame though. For the record.

Giannis
Dame
Middleton
Jrue

CJ
Nurk
Lopez

Would have to be a pretty substantial upgrade in a CJ trade for us.

I agree with this, because if Young is Portland's best off-season addition, there are enough way next season could go a little sideways that Portland could be trading away a 17th or 18th pick. Young isn't worth that

This is how I generally feel about most proposed DJJ trades. However, I'd be willing to toss in next year's pick (perhaps 1-10 protected), as I think it is unlikely that things sour with Dame that quickly where you end up in a full-blown tank within the year. Yes, you might end up giving up a pick in the teens, but that feels like it might be worth the risk.

Is Young that target? I don't know. I do believe though that any picks or swaps beyond 2022 better be bringing back a high-level starter difference maker.

That tells us more about the Blazer FO than it does about the intrinsic value of draft picks.
Yes, they've missed a lot, but weird that they have so much luck in 2nd round. Nas & Ant continuing to develop into promising players would help the outlook.

nah, it's more that Zach didn't work out and we overpaid a bit for Roco.

But it might be fairly easy to recover a first for Roco if we put him in a trade at the deadline if things go sour. That's why I'm largely OK with trading our pick for someone like Young, but it's hard to recover from that 2017 draft.

I bet McLemore was a guy dame wanted. As for who he wanted that they didn’t get, Porter is the best guess.
I think DeRozan is the guy Dame wanted and didn't get...maybe Batum as well

Agreed. If we traded a pick for Thad and then sucked we could probably flip him near the deadline and recover part of it. He's pretty much Nate's favorite player he's ever coached and some contender will have an injury at the 4/5 spot.

I think it would be worth trading a pick (top 15 protected) and DJ for him. He won the hustle award (box outs, diving on the floor, all that shit) last year, he's a great passer, and a good defender. He is the anti-Melo and if we're going to continue the lack of backup PG bullshit we need some playmakers at other positions like him. It could be duplicative, but if we could sign him and one of Millsap or Avery Bradley we'd add a lot of competitive edge and toughness to our team. CJ would never agree to it, but I'd love if we slid Roco down and gave him 30 mpg off the bench.

Lillard/Simons
CJ/Powell
Powell/Roco
Roco/Young
Nurkic/Zeller/Young

I like that second unit, but Nas better be in the rotation this year.

Young has remade his game as a playmaking 4. I think he'd add a great wrinkle to our offense that we could make use of when Dame is trapped or we need high post action. I wouldn't hesitate at throwing a first for him. He'd be part of our 8 man playoff rotation for sure, while Jones clearly isn't.

CJ on his pod: nothing ground breaking.

- Happy to get Powell back. Our offense was amazing with him, and he's such a great competitor who we were still figuring out how to maximize when we got him late last year.
- My guy DJ picked up his option, happy that he's coming back as well-- excited to see how Chauncey uses him.
- Lost Melo-- sad that he's gone because team learned a lot from him with regards to work ethic and longevity in the league.
- Lost Enes -- really good dude, was a terrific teammate
- Really happy for Zach that he got a contract from a great org. Hopeful that he can get healthy again, excited for him.

- Zeller-- "solid guy. ultimate teammate from what I heard of him from previous teammates of his and the agent we share. He's gonna do things that go unnoticed like set great screens, dive on the floor for loose balls. Just a sharp/smart player. He's gonna be a huge help to our bench."
- Ben -- "sniper from the same draft as me. He's gonna give us a guy who the defense can't leave and can get hot."
- Snell -- "very very tall, long wing, 3&D guy, shot 50-50-100 last year."

" I'm really looking forward to playing with these guys, i'm sure more is going to be done."

...not sure what more can be done without involving himself or one of the players he commented on :dunno:

Did he mention Dame at all?

No mention of defense. He and Dame need to understand how important that is
