Starters were good, except CJ.
Bench was bad, except Skal.

Bench was 0-7 from 3 (lots of late shot clocks 3s)
Whiteside looked great.
Collins looked ready.
Hood looked fine.

If CJ plays like normal CJ, our starters are going to be fantastic this season.

Ant isn't playing aggressively.
Hezonja and Tolliver looked very meh.

Man Mario was so bad tonight how do you play 18 minutes and go 0-3 with no assists??

I can see why he hasn’t stuck on a team since being drafted 5th

5 turnovers. 5.

I didn't even know it was possible to turn the ball over that many times, go 4/26-whatever, and still be in the starting lineup.

With respect to "Contribution Points" in terms of the predictions game, CJ managed to tie Skal for #6 on the contribution list - all while playing considerably more minutes.

* Nuggets were hot from the arc but that can happen when a team gets a bunch of uncontested and poorly contested three's. Sure seems like I remember some really bad perimeter defense from the pre-season. Blazers have to clean that up

* only 19 points from the Blazer bench on 6-22 shooting with 1 assist vs 4 turnovers. That's ugly and it should make Stotts consider staggered rotations instead of that platoon shit he tried in the 1st half

* for 5 off-seasons now Olshey has refused to add another back court play-maker. The offense is almost always ragged when Dame sits. CJ can't run the offense and I don't see anybody else that can. It's all on Dame and that's a big burden

* Doris Burke has the hots for Jokic. She had them last year and the temp is still high.

Pretty much my take also. Give em some time to gel.

We will shoot better from three and that could have been the difference in this game against one of the best teams in the league. Once everybody figures out how to play together and CJ pulls his head out of his ass... we'll be a really tough team for anyone to beat.

You ain't wrong. Simons is gonna have some good and some very bad like we watched tonight.

And they except this kid to just run the 2nd unit like he’s some vet. Our bench is going to be bad. I’m preparing myself for that.

Believe whatever you like but you are wrong on that. Simons will be fine he is just young. You guys have anointed him the next Kobe Bryant or what have you. It's not me. It's that you have made him a messiah. The Kid is young. He is going to have to work on defense and you are going to see stretches like tonight where he essentially gives the lead up and Stotts has to pull him.
Just because i have told the truth on the matter and i happen to be right is causing you to be defensive. Now you are saying i have made up my mind that i "Dislike" him. That is just childish. The kid has a couple hundred minutes for his entire career. He hasn't done enough in the league to be "DISLIKED" by me. I already told you once. Lets see where he is 20 games into the season. Then lets see where he is at 40 games. Then lets see if they even keep him next year? Give the kid a chance to fail. That is the only way he will get better.
Who said he was Kobe? There you go with a made up argument again.

I didn't read through this entire thread, but have to say I was impressed by Skal. I don't think he is ready for big time minutes, but when he was in he looked effective. Bazemore had some good steals, that is about all I can say good about the rest of the bench.

Why the hell did Mario play 18 minutes?! Why are we playing 10 guys extended minutes in a key divisional matchup?! We saw last year how much one game in this series matters to seeding, and then we didn't play as if this game mattered worth a damn. Just a gross opening.

Dude? It was just a statement to make a point. I even said" Or what have you"
But if you would like me to start digging up outlandishly overblown expectations that have been made about Simmons all summer i will have a field day with you.
So maybe Kobe wasn't actually mentioned??? It seems like you got the point but don't have a real response other than to try to nitpick a word or phrase you don't like.
Mark my words! I am right on this. Simmons will be very very raw until he gets minutes. The only way he will get minutes is if he can play better defense and keep from doing what he did tonight.
This is not even a conversation you want to continue. You know better than this Hoops.

I was also. he has some skills and he will see minutes this year.

Lmao. Jokic had too many of feltons donuts.

Was Evan Turner the key? Without him we might as well tank?

Back home and pissed off. They simply shot lights out from 3. No blazer got it going offensively. Whitesides was great but got tired down the end there. skal was ok. zach was ok too. baze brings it and I like him. I dont think having et, moe, or chief would have made a difference. portland just was ice fucking cold all game. the second it looked like the blazers were about to go on a run denver calls a timeout.

Bottom line is this new crew went toe to toe with arguably the best all around team in the league. With even the slightest bit of shooting from CJ or Hood the game would have been in the bag.

That said, a forward with major offense skills would not be a bad thing i.e. Love or Griffin

Sigh. FFS.

I know it might not be fair to say but Whiteside leaves a lot to be desired. He gets crazy stats, but when you actually focus on him you can spot mistakes on almost every defensive set. Sometimes he was like "Now i should guard Jokic? But if I go there how do i get the rebound? I ll just stay in the free throw line". And if there was no chance to block sometimes he doesn't even lift his hand. You could also see that he was a step late after catching the ball in the pick and roll, he was late to decide what to do with it. Maybe I got too much used to Nurkic's playmaking and defensive awareness, but it looked bad to me. And then you see 16 points, 19 rebounds and you say oh wtf he was a god, but Nurkic could get 14 points and 10 rebounds and his positive impact would be mugh higher.
Of course I'm not blaming the loss to Whiteside, this was not on him. Just a comparison with Nurkic and how the team is so much different and everybody needs time to get the chemistry.

I have voiced my concers for Simons and the lack of a playmaker in the 2nd unit and I fear this will haunt us all season long as the kid lacks experience and it shows. I was never a Hezonja believer as well. On the bright side Skal was amazing and Zach was solid although his outside shot needs a lot of work, that airball was shocking.

But after all we lost to a GREAT team that finished 2nd last season in the West and they brought back their entire team while we changed half of it,including 3 starters. The loss was to be expected and it doesn't mean we are that bad, I just hope we can get it together soon enough and not to lose much ground.

Man, I feel like I was watching a different game. Skal had a couple of nice defensive plays but overall didn't have a lot of impact beyond what you saw in the stats. He and Tolliver were just occupying space.

Whiteside (and Collins, to be fair) clearly had an impact on what Denver was doing, particularly in the first half. The interior was pretty much closed off when he was out there.

Portland couldn't figure out how to challenge three pointers, and that's why they lost. If Nurk were playing last night he doesn't do any better of a job guarding the three point line. We don't ask out centers to switch to the three point line (except for opposing centers at times). The Jokic threes were legit gripes, I think, but hey, he hit them at 30% last year so I didn't really have a problem with Whiteside's strategy of letting him fly.

My key points:

1. Stotts needs to use his 1 coaching challenge every single game in the first quarter on whatever ticky tack bullshit gets called on Zach. We should call it the Collins Challenge from now on. Use it to fucking embarrass refs. If you blow a questionable call on Zach YOU WILL GET CALLED ON IT. The strategy of holding onto it until the 4th quarter is a waste of time. By then the foul damage is done. Zach deserves a better rep in the league than he has, and the coach has an actual tool in his hands he can use to make that happen. (I'm going to start a new thread with this point just because I feel it so strongly.)

2. It's kind of annoying that we got Hood to sign with us by promising a starter's job. Because clearly Bazemore is a better fit for defending the perimeter and hustling, while Hood makes more sense scoring off the bench.

3. Portland is going to blindside a lot of teams this year with them thinking they can stroll to the rim like they do against most teams. Word is going to get around that if you hit a lot of threes, you'll win. If you don't, you won't. Because it's fucking hard to score with all those arms in the middle.

4. Neither Ant nor CJ were second banana tonight. Portland needs a second banana guard. Both guys seem to be trying new things (Ant = playing, CJ = take more threes) and I'm hoping they get used to it.

5. We picked a bad time to lose a home opener. There are a lot of road meals ahead. Kind of nervous.

This is a great idea!
I also agree with the idea of keeping your challenge until the fourth being a waste. The refs review enough stuff anyway in the fourth.

I didn't say the loss was on Whiteside, it was just my observations and comparison with Nurkic. You are right perimeter D was attrocious and also CJ made a lot of mistakes. I disagree with the "strategy" regarding Jokic though because I don't think there is strategy. This is a typical Whiteside thing. Just like Westbrook leaving his man open to chase boards. Of course there are not many stretch bigs so it will hurt less than what Russ is doing, but you don't leave Jokic completely alone two times in a row after that 2nd half he had, at the time you don't think ah he was 30% last year so chance is he misses, no need to let it out of your hands and it's not that Jokic would blow by him if he was a bit closer to guard him.
Zach played better than Whiteside in my opinion.

More props for Dame by comparison. @THE HCP 's guy Laker LeBron walks off the court during the National anthem yelling his 'look at me' nonsense.

After his "uneducated" comment about Daryl Morey, and MIT grad who is perhaps one of the smartest guys in the NBA, LeBron continues his #sellout tour.
