I don't think we'll drop Brandon Roy

you really believe that? Keeping Roy also costs us from being able to use the full MLE this year

Roy has never been a cancer. Whose growth would he stunt? Wes has almost peaked. EWill is a question mark. Armon has no future in the NBA, and Nolan is a rookie who will get Rudy's time most likely. Playing Roy for ~20mpg won't hurt anyone (especially considering we lost one of our other outside threats in Rudy).

And again, using this clause on Roy won't get us under the cap THIS YEAR. We won't have full MLE regardless.

No, you are wrong about the full MLE, I am pretty sure waiving Roy gets us that. And if we sign Oden for that 8.8 mil or so Roy then costs the team at least 7-8 mil in Lux tax. It he really worth keepin around?

Huh? The Blazers would still be over the cap, and next year Batum will be due a fat contract.

Hold up.

If the Blazers waive Roy AND sign Oden, there will be no MLE left (as the MLE will go towards GO's 8.8mil QO). They will have it only if they waive both Roy AND Oden, and that's not happening.

From various sources:

Howard Beck:
Paul Allen, the Blazers' billionaire owner, can surely afford the bill, but waiving Roy will not create cap room.

storyteller:
Cutting Roy and getting nothing out of him could cost up to $68 million: up to $63 million in Roy's guaranteed future salary plus whatever it costs to bring in a replacement ($5 million per year if the Blazers waived Roy and then used their full Mid-Level to replace him). Even if they used the MLE and re-signed Oden at the Qualifying Offer level, the Blazers would remain below the luxury tax line so tax payments would be avoided entirely.

Being the luxury tax actually gives the Blazers a $3mil MLE.

This is part of a piece from Blazersedge and confirmed by "Storyteller", the essence is waiving Roy does allow us to have a fill MLE this year, I have read that elsewhere as well.

If the Blazers retain Roy in 2011-12, they will still be on the hook for his $63 million. If they then gave Oden the Qualifying Offer amount of $8.8 million, they wouldn’t be eligible to use the full $5 million MLE, only the smaller $3 million MLE for taxpayers. Using the MLE available to them and factoring in contracts for Roy and Oden, Portland would likely incur a tax payment of about $13 million."

Foye sure helped out Minnesota. Roy with two bad knees is still better than Foye has ever been in his career.

I looked again, and I still don't see anywhere I said Foye was better than Roy. I said the Wolves knew his knees were shit.

If we let Roy go and he signs with another team like Orlando, LA, OKC, or Chicago, I will renounce my Blazers fandom and be glad to cheer him trouncing the Portland Trailblazers every year in the Playoffs.

Roy is one of the nicest guys in the game but also has the killer instinct seen in HOF guards. And so, when you cross that killer instinct by betraying him, you'll never ever earn his respect again.

EDIT: I mean, shoot, if you let him go, he doesn't even have to play right now. He could wait until other contending teams are below the cap. You can add New Orleans, NY, Boston, Miami, San Antonio, Dallas, Houston, Minnesota to the list of teams who would want Roy as well.

That's some nice revisionist history. Sure, Roy had prior knee surgeries that everyone knew about prior to the draft, but his knees didn't turn to "shit" until World Metta Peace (Ron Artest) stepped on his foot as he was cutting the basket a year and a half ago and caused him to lose all of the meniscus in one knee. Before that, his "shit" knees had been doing well enough to win him Rookie of the Year and make him a 3 time All Star.

If the Blazers waive Roy and sign Oden, they would still be able to use the full MLE. Teams only are limited to the $3 million MLE if they are more than $4 mil over the luxury tax threshold, and the Blazers wouldn't be if they waived Roy. That said, is there a guy out there available for the $5 mil MLE who can bring what Brandon Roy is capable of? I doubt it. I'd keep Brandon for this year, perhaps use the $3 mil MLE to sign a player, and then make the decision about cutting Roy prior to next season. I think he has more basketball left in him.

yet you forget to add that Roy will cost much more if Oden is kept as we would pay many millions in the Lux Tax and my take is he does not have much more bball left - especially of any decent consistent quality, his knees will only get worse the more he plays.

Yet You forgot to Add that we Have Paul Allen who is throwing caution to the wind to make something happen before he sells the team.

+ 6 months of rest for Roy and the Jury is not out.

Thanks for clearing that up.

I agree.

and where did you get this FANTASY from? lol

There's no doubt that Brandon will cost the team significant dollars if they keep him. For this season and next, IIRC, the luxury tax is still at the same dollar for dollar over amount as in the prior CBA. Depending on what they do with Oden and other players, the Blazers will probably be something like $5 to $10 mil over the tax threshold, so it would cost PA an additional $5 to $10 mil to get to see what Roy is actually capable of before cutting him. I know that many here and around the league assume the worst for him, and that may prove to be the reality. OTH, there aren't many players out there who have Brandon's skills and I, for one at least, would dearly love to see how his knees are after more than a full year to regain strength after surgery and how he adapts his game to fit with his physical limitations.

This team needs to move on from Roy and focus on the guys that hopefully have their best years ahead of them at the SG spot. Keeping Roy around is just holding this team's growth back and postponing the inevitable.

yep, nice and clear common sense

Let me Remind you of Something, Paul Allen's yacht has TWO submarines. Nothing common about that. Roy is his Boy, and he's staying around.

Right now that's Wes and Hopefully Nolan. I'm sure there will be plenty of focus on those two. Plus, Roy can teach those two a lot through osmosis.

Roy's knees are so bad he couldn't play in his own charity game in Seattle or LMA game a month ago in Portland. He would've had over a month of rest after either game. Makes me very sad and I can understand how many fellow fans are reluctant to accept it, even bordering on delusional, after all he did for our franchise, but our beloved all-star is dead. He is never coming back. This is why a part of me wishes the lockout wouldn't have ended because thinking about it is so depressing.

Don't forget about Elliott Williams.

I thought personal matters kept him from LMA's games. Link to his knees keeping him out?

Great Breakdown!

Waived or not, Roy will receive his salary, giving billionaire Blazers owner Paul Allen two options: Pay a lot for nothing or pay a lot a lot for whatever Roy can give you in 2011-2012.

Wow bro step away from the ledge. I can see what your saying but your premise is off. Roy didn't play in his own charity game for one reason, The upcoming NBA season, his #1 priority. He's not about to risk one ounce on his last chance to come back and prove everyone wrong that he's done. I understand how disillusioning it is to be a B-Roy fan, but at the same time I trust his resolve over everyone's feelings about his future.

He did this last year 2 games after returning from surgery:

I know he was inconsistent as hell, but BRoy gimping around on 1 leg is still a top 10 clutch player in the league. That has to be worth something.
