Hoping it’s a 4 year deal. I haven’t had more excitement for a second rounder than Trent, who I always wished we signed to a 4 year deal rather than a 3 year deal.
3 or 4 years doesn't really make a huge difference.

It doesn't really matter because 4th has to be a team option but if we exercise it he becomes UFA right ?

Can we do 4 with him as an RFA at the end? Seems like that would be ideal. 4th year at small salary could be a huge benefit if he becomes a rotational player.

I wonder what his agent would say to that?
What's his alternative, sign for a two way and don't lock up ~$5 million?

Many second round picks don't even get a minimum salary.

Teams get stuck paying scrubs like Elleby or Didi, flip side is having a guy on a cheap deal if he does well.

Sign three years and get a better paycheck on year 4. Flip side is he could get injured and make not get the 4th year?

Again. I wonder what his agent is saying?

Correct, so most likely if he's really good it would be better to lock him up after 3 years instead of potentially losing him for nothing (see Dort staying vs Brunson leaving this summer).

No, for rookies not drafted in the 1st round that's the risk. If he's good, gotta pay him a year earlier. Picking up the 4th year likely makes his agent mad if he's worth a lot more.

and there it is. pretty damn friendly for the team.

edit, holy hell Spotrac is quick. Signed using part of the MLE.

Wow. With his play I would have thought he would have received at least two fully guaranteed years. But, it doesn't matter and its pretty much guaranteed all three years get picked up with this kid.

Pretty standard deal for a late 2nd round pick, even one who played well.

Only 6 2nd rounders this year have signed to actual rosters as of now, so while it seems like a steal for the Blazers, it really isn't a bad deal for Jabari too considering he thought he'd be playing on a two-way initially.

This contract still sets Portland up to dump Didi sometime between now and the trade deadline and duck the tax. They don't have to worry about replacing his roster spot anymore.

Win-win. Take the win. Walker is.
Blazers smartly use part of the MLE for a 3-year. Guaranteed with a partial. A reasonable deal for both sides.
If JW gets time on court … becomes part of the rotation … of some significance, nothing stops Portland from rewarding him in year 2 or 3 or with a 2nd contract.

Well, yeah, kinda. Chaps my @$$, it does … when one side (in anything in life) complains about how the one they just defeated receives any kind of support or credit or …

In this case, both sides won (my favorite, it is) in a non-zero-sum solution. It may not be a deal a given person sees as optimal, but if various sides can walk away and WANT to keep a deal AND make deals in the future, then I say take the win.

Walker had a 90 second or so stretch towards the end of the 3rd. He swished a corner 3, defensive rebound, behind the back assist, and a block. Teammates don't pass the ball to him but he made a putback, couple free throws. 9 very efficient pts for the game. This dude is good.

Kind of plays like a young Jerami Grant when he was a role player.
