i mean... this was expected given the autonomy he had to hire and fire staff.

i'm just waiting to see if they hire someone above him.

Now that they've got this fixed..
The next move we TrailBlazer people need to see is the elimination of the people above him.
Bye Bye Jody & Bert....

Wouldn't hold my breath on that til 2025 at least.

I mean a President of Basketball Ops hire. I suppose the somewhat newsworthy item in this release is the clear demarcation they're making about Cronin as "GENERAL MANAGER" and not PoBO.

shit. i just realized .... my avatar curse has finally lifted.

wow. That was almost a decade long run.

Honestly, I haven't seen NY legit reports that anybody much better was available.

Maybe I just missed it... But we got about what I expected from those contracts.

I've been paying attention and I've only seen 'reports' of two offered alternative trades, both for CJ:

* Atlanta - Gallinari + filler + a future protected 1st
* Dallas - Powell + Kleber + future protected 1st
* Pelicans - Hart + Louzada + 21M TPE + 3.3M TPE + future protected 1st

comparing what Blazers got to what was offered looks like the Blazers got the best return, especially considering it took a perfect storm of unfavorable circumstances to screw the Blazers out of the 11th pick

a lot of people don't accept that though and seem convinced that Cronin was stupid and refused better offers and/or missed better opportunities

I think Norm Powell's contract had negative value, and Nance's injury history left him with almost no positive value as an expiring

personally, I think Cronin might have been able to get a little better draft package from the Pels. Maybe the better of the Pels or Laker picks, both top-4 protected. Of course if he would have accomplished that only to see the Lakers leap-frog into the top-4, the same people calling Cronin stupid now, would be calling him stupid after the lottery

I remain convinced that Cronin was operating under some fairly specific trade deadline instructions from the Vulcans. Those were:

* dismantle the dead-end roster
* get under the tax
* significantly cut future payroll obligations

it may even have included a demand to trade CJ and Powell no matter what. If all that's true, considering what Cronin did at the trade deadline it's no surprise he got the GM job

Serious question: why? What has he done to earn the job that they would promote him without even interviewing other candidates?
as a staunch critic of all his moves, i wonder the same question. but there's something to be said about convincing Dame to stay after all the noise from last year. Navigating that stuff, with his health, with all the organizational turmoil only to end up in a situation where Dame is ten toes in and as fully committed as ever during a full-on tanking season is an achievement.

Mainly, I didn't hate his moves like many in here do. I'm happy he actually went forward with breaking up the dame cj backcourt. And I've liked what I've heard him say about moves and direction going forward.

EXTREMELY happy he gets a chance to complete his job. He took a team going nowhere….FOR YEARS, hit reset and now gets to complete that.

My thought is that it can’t be worse than Olshey’s teams. Purgatory is awful.

+1 :cheers:

Not getting back a 2nd lottery pick this year is a big red flag to me ... instead settling for the Bucks pick that at best looks to be in the early 20's. The main problem I have with Cronin is that I'm very skeptical it was his 'vision' at all at the deadline and instead Jody/Vulcans telling him to cut and slash payroll while getting back .50 on the $1. Like anyone else in this position he deserves to be given a fair shake and I appreciate his relationship with Billups but his leash is a pretty short one with me (not that it matters what me, you or anyone on here really thinks).

Not surprised. Let's see what he does in rebuilding this team. I'm looking forward to seeing what is accomplished this offseason.

Cronin is getting his chance, I hope he makes the best of it.

I dont think thats the point. Not having any reasonable contingency if the Pels somehow made the playoffs is just negligence.

Like if the Pelicans make the playoffs we get the Lakers pick type of contingency?

or something that's better than that MIL 2025 pick that is fairly inconsequential in the present situation where the tenet is to build around Dame.

so then, if Paul George hadn't got Covid and the Clips had beat the Pels, there would be no red flag?

That he didn't back it up and protect the pick by getting the better of the Pels/Lakers pick when LA was in a free fall is a red flag. I want a GM with some foresight, not just taking what is handed to them.

that's not what he said...."2nd lottery pick this year". That narrows it down to either getting the Lakers pick from the Pels....

or some other imaginary team giving up a lottery pick for Powell, RoCo, or Nance....which of course is ridiculous

I have suggested before that maybe, Cronin might have got the better of either the Lakers or Pels pick, both top-4 protected. But at the time the Lakers were 9th seed, only a half game out of 8th seed and 4 games ahead of NOP.

but if Cronin had got that deal, and the Lakers leap-frog into the top-4 in the lottery, is Cronin back to being an idiot?

the Lakers ween't in free fall yet. If they had been it's doubtful the Pels would have cooperated

regardless, i've explained my thoughts on his deals ad nauseum and i'm of the belief that this CJ deal did not necessarily have to be done at the time. Don't really wanna rehash. The point in the end of it all still remains, he got pretty shitty return. Not sure how that consideration in a vacuum can be denied.

Why not at least have the foresight to put that stipulation in instead of taking back a Bucks pick that is going to be in the 20's? Maybe free fall wasn't accurate but they were hanging on for dear life.

How sad that "can't be worse than Olshey" is all we ask.
It’s not all I ask. If it doesn’t get better then move the fuck on. I guess I just think he can’t destroy the franchise because burning it to the ground or adding pieces that make irrelevant for years, like we were, makes no difference. New ownership will either like the moves of find their own guy

Agreed on missing out on the pick. He played the odds, and the odds would have said we'd get that pick. He still tried to do something, which could have greatly paid off. And it failed to an extent, but we still have another future asset, which we will obviously not know the value there for a few years. But I liked that he was trying to shake some things up, something a Blazers GM has been unwilling to do since Trader Bob left.
