Notice Joe Cronin New GM

Hart is a clear improvement over Nance - he is just as good while being healthier and more reliable. Right now, Grant is a better fit than CJ. If Grant continues to play like this and re-signs for a reasonable amount, it looks like a win for Cronin. If he turns out to be a one year rental - time to revisit the conversation.

I'm more concerned we're going to give Grant $110m or something like that. Losing him for nothing would be less than ideal also.

I'm guessing he's gonna average around 28M per year when he becomes extension eligible. That's a lot, but when the new TV deal comes in, it's not going to be outrageous.

I hear you, but that is exactly how we justified $200m to Meyers, Turner, Crabbe, Harkless, and Festus.

$28m/yr is a disgusting amount for Grant. I was hoping for around Ant’s salary or a little less.

Okay to be fair, Grant is better than all those guys combined.

Also, it's well documented that Grant's looking for his max extension of 4/112: https://bleacherreport.com/articles...he-market-for-nba-trade-deadlines-grand-prize

For any team to sign off on a trade for Grant, they'll need assurances of his plans to re-sign this offseason, just like Gordon did in Denver. Grant also has little interest in joining a new situation where he doesn't feature as a primary offensive option, sources said.

I have to imagine part of the push internally (from Grant's side) to choose Portland over other suitors like Phoenix/Milwaukee was that Portland was one of the only teams willing to give that to him. He also could have signed an extension around 22M/year when he was traded from Detroit but that never happened. I expect a deal to be inked in mid December when he becomes eligible. I would even say it's a forgone conclusion with the way he's played so far.

The deal will also start at 24M, not 28M. By the time it reaches the 30M mark we'll be well into the new TV deal salary cap and it will look much more reasonable. Either way, I'd much rather be paying 28M for a two way forward than 30+ for a one way guard like CJ. Or 30+ for a one way guard in Norm Powell + a one way forward in RoCo. Average salary for a starting level player is like 20M and I would say Grant is at least above average.

It's really not. 2 way forwards are the most valuable commodity in the league. I can't image the team lets go of the first two way forward they've hand in almost a decade because they want to quibble over 3-4 million a year.

Oh no doubt they’re extending this guy. Doesn’t make sense NOT bring him back if you traded a 1st for him and he’s been playing well.

For some reason, I’m optimistic the number is going to be less than the $28m figure you’ve stated though. I can see $28m being the figure of the last year of his extension, but I’d still feel uneasy if $28m is the yearly average.

The deal is already likely in place, so let’s hope it’s lower than that.

Are we sure?

I mean, maybe if we're lucky we can trade Jerami Grant for Jalen Duren...

at 24 mil, he'd be the 52nd highest paid player in the league.

more than fair

Kay....so since I am new to the board, I just read all 22 pages. Some memorable posts for sure. Here are a few worth noting (I try to only regurgitate positive).

I like the hire.

I really don’t get the disconnect with some of you.
We wanted to clear money and not take money back in these trades…that’s what we accomplished.
There are reports out there that there were “better offers” on the table for some of these guys. Do we really think Cronin and billups were like na we’ll take the shitty offer?
We made moves that accomplished what we set out to do. Now it’s time to rebuild it.
None of us know the value of any of our assets. Let it all play out.
FYI if we didn’t take like we did we wouldn’t have the 6th best odds at the #1 pick. People seem to forget that. Our lottery pick is also a product of the trades as well

I'm good with it. I didn't think they'd be able to find anybody better, and Joe strikes me as a very calculated and deliberate person.

I'm happier with this hire than if they'd brought in the next John Nash.

YESSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Welcome back to Class, Dignity,Vision, and Trust.
I COULD NOT FUCKING BE HAPPIER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Character matters.
You'll see.

I actually like that, he has a proper plan and is willing to commit to it. It is much better imho than trying to maximize individual trades over not being afraid to tear it down to build it as the plan dictates.

There is always a chance that it will fail (but that's true for any GM), but at least, there is a proper plan and the willingness to run it. This team did not have any plan other than add stuff around Dame and CJ before.

EXTREMELY happy he gets a chance to complete his job. He took a team going nowhere….FOR YEARS, hit reset and now gets to complete that.

My thought is that it can’t be worse than Olshey’s teams. Purgatory is awful.

All these top GM's had to get there start somewhere, and were unproven at the time. I like this move. Cronin is using his whole staff, including coaches, to do the work, and come up with the best possible solutions for competing at the highest level. I look forward to seeing it develop. Just because you've been a top GM somewhere else, doesn't guaranty success at the new stop. I'm sure Danny Ainge is enjoying the Mitchell/Gobert situation. So blessings to Joe & his Team for success this offseason, and beyond. Go get'er done.

1. I’m glad Portland traded CJ and cleared the decks of the bigger contracts except Lillard. It’s done.
2. Not being a tax payer is a good thing this off-season.
3. Ingles signed early for less or not at all with cap hold.
4. EBEC traded, sent away for less, or ballast in a deadline trade. IMHO it’s one of the first 2.

Good luck, Joe, on the quick rebuild.

This is fun.
I do have an amazing position. I interact, literally, with everyone in the league.
I get to hear and see things, and meet people, that, as a lifelong NBA worshipper, is truly an honor, and I do not take for granted.
The hardest part, is not sharing everything I see with you guys...lol..

In addition to Blazer games, I have met DuaLipa, (got a "ello darling ow are you?" from her)..Had a nice convo with Pete Townshend, (as a guitar player I cannot tell you how cool that was!), Had a great time with the girls from HAIM, been "on the stage" with everyone from Jack White, Imagine Dragons, Justin Bieber, and my favorite so far, Toto.(opened for Journey)...Tonight I get Dave Matthews Band, and tomorrow I'll be rinkside for the Winterhawks game.
Life doesn't suck.

thanks for the rundown....Pete Townshend, wow...did you ask him how many guitars he smashed in his early years?....and I apologize Wade, I know you work at the Moda but I can't recall what your job is?

Are max extensions a % of the cap not a set amount?

During Blazer games, I am a "facilitator" (concierge) for the visiting teams. I am in the hallway you often see as all the players enter/exit the building. I work in tandem with the team attendents.I am always in or near the visitors locker room. The bummer is, I never get to see the games 'till I get home.
For Winterhawk games, pretty much the same responsibility except I am at ice level and get to watch the game. (btw, the Hawks are really good this year, a relatively inexpensive ticket, I highly recommend! and those kids are all terrific, well mannered (off the ice) easy to root for)
And at concerts, it depends...Sometimes I am at the talent level entry, sometimes in the artist dressing room, but usually on the side of the stage.
For an lifelong NBA fan, and a wanna-be rock star, its a great gig. Thanks for asking, wiz.

HA....
I am sure You finally taking GPII "seriously" is all the validation we are all waiting for.
If he is such a game changer on the defensive end as everybody around here claims.....why did we cut him already once before?

Excellent post.

I didn't know anything one way or the other so I didn't take a stand. I was happy to see change and liked everything I'd seen and heard of Cronin, and Billups won the right way as a player. So I was happy with the change and giving these guys a chance to deliver for Dame.

It seems to be working out and I'm incredibly excited for the next few years.

*Also, I really appreciate you guys with inside info and your willingness to share.
You didn't hear any inside info from me!

You've shared some experiences. Nothing I would call inside, but enough to get us a better idea about some of the dynamics we wouldn't know otherwise. But you've been responsible.

I appreciate it.
Thanks bro! Yeah we can't talk about shit, no leaks. One day maybe a book when I retire!
Oh.... I got a great Rueben Patterson/NewOrleans story!

Have you ever seen Shanna beat anyone up yet?

HAHAHAHA!!!!
I love Shanna. Very happy to be on her good side. Probably have as much respect for her as anyone in the building, to be honest.
She may be a skinny little thing, but I don't care who you are, she can kick your ass, and I pity anyone who disrespects her.
Gotta ask, how you know her?

I dunno.
'Cos they made a mistake?
Flipside to that coin asks "why did he contribute to a championship last season?"
With a ring, comes a reputation, and he got one.

I was a coastie from when I was 18 until about 25. Off and on. I got the gravy positions too. But I could tell story after story about Shanna.

I once saw her stand toe to toe and give blows to a guy who was a high ranking gypsy joker at a Metallica concert close to 20 years ago.

She loved me because she knew I had balls. But if you’re on her bad side she don’t give a rats ass about you.
