Jason Quick ‏@jwquick Blazers just complete meeting w/Batum and agent in downtown Portland and say they will match any offer and will not engage in sign-and-trade

Jason Quick ‏@jwquick Blazers GM Olshey says it was "constructive" in that Blazers were able to get their message across face-to-face in meeting at The Nines

Jason Quick ‏@jwquick
Olshey: "We told Nic it is in his best interests to sign with us."

Blazers were represented at meeting with Batum and his agent by Olshey, Chad Buchanan and salary cap specialist Joe Cronin

Dwight Jaynes ‏@dwightjaynes You think Batum was here for a meeting because he wants to stay? LOL

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

I think its all leverage on olsheys part to scare minny off from signing him to an offer sheet

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

Well reding between the lines of Olshey, sounds like Batum wants to move on. All Olshey could say was it was constructive because Blazers got to get their message across face to face.

Nothing avout Nic wanting to stay or Nic wants to stay if compensated or anything else from Nic's camp. Just a "we got our message across" . . . OUCH!

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

Batum probably wants to go, but man is Jaynes a cock.

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

Dwight Jaynes should not be saying "lol"

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

Can you someone explain this to me? How is the offer being moved upwards and upwards? Are the Blazers actually making counter-offers, which Minnesota is trying to top? I mean, I know Minnesota doesn't have the savviest front office, but it's hard to believe that they're bidding against themselves when there hasn't even been a rumour of another team bidding recently (at least, not that I've seen).

If Batum's agent is actually getting Minnesota to keep moving the offer up, somehow, I'm going to have to disagree with people who are saying he's stupid.

The explanation of this is that because Canzano does nothing but sling BS, he has no ability to detect when others are doing the same. Get back to me when there's a report with specific numbers. It's pretty obvious that the T'Wolves are trying to intimidate the Blazers into participating in a S&T. They can claim that they're willing to offer the moon, but until it's in writing and they're actually willing to accept the risk that the Blazers won't match and they'll have to perform on the offer sheet, all of this talk doesn't mean jack.

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

Dwight Jaynes should not be saying "lol"

I bet he pronounces it ell-oh-ell when he dictates his tweets to his granddaughter who "knows how to use the Windows."

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

Dwight said lol on twitter, again.

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

Dwight is losing it with the LOL thing. Funny because if he was more acurate with his information on other issues, readers might start believeing him on all issues. But he slaughters his understanding of how slary cap with restricted free agenst work and then wonder why readers won't take his word for it on Batum.

He has gotten so frustrated with his drop in credibilty he starts to get defensive with this Batum take. You don't see other journalist using "LOL" . . . Dwight is on a downward spiral and he keeps making it worse for himself.

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

What deoes he gain by letting us all know that Batum doesn't like Portland? It's like the jackhole that tells you that What's Her Name only dates you because you help her with her Spanish homework. It just seems hurtful.

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

He's just trying to stir up controversy so he has something to write about and make money off of.

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

BTW- pretty sure offer has been made to Batum from the Wolves. Yahoo reported an offer was made on 7/3/12

As was expected, an offer was made to restricted free agent Nicolas Batum. It is the Minnesota Timberwolves that have popped up as the first suitors, offering a four-year, $45-$50 million deal to acquire Batum. I think it will probably be the first of several contract offers extended to Batum, with the next two likely to come from the New Orleans Hornets and Toronto Raptors.

I know... it's just depressing me today, hearing that every player I've liked in the last 5 years actually "always hated Portland, couldn't stand the place, and the fans are such clingy bitches jeez!"

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

I don't know if Blazers will match, but I like the way they are approaching this. Match anything and not sign and trade . . . may turn some teams off.

Pretty much. Talented writers draw audiences with the quality of their writing. Untalented writers draw audience by, essentially, trolling them...just trying to get reactions.

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

The more Dwight posts the more he sounds like a sad little man who is angry that everyone is laughing at him.

He's so narcissistic he doesn't even realize they're laughing at him - he thinks THEY think he's funny...

So Canzano says the offer is NOW over 11 million a season? When was it under 11 million? Hasn't the number tossd out always been at least 45 mil? Even I can divide 45 by 4 and come up with 11+.

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

I don't know why people are throwing out number here. When other FA's get offers, "reputable" people like Woj and Bucher and the like say specific numbers like "Nash's 3/25.1M" or "Hawes 2/13M" or "Teletovic's taxpayer MLE" or "Hibbert 4/Max" or "Deron's 5/100M" or "Billups 1/4.3M" or "Crawford 3/15.7M". The closest thing we've heard is Yahoo saying MIN wants to offer 4/45-50M or so on the first day, when Nic supposedly canceled all of his other appointments. Since then, it's been Canzano and Jaynes and progressively more unprofessional reportage.

If MIN really wanted to sign Nic at 4/45, you'd see on ESPN "Batum agrees in principle to 4/45M" just like all the others. I think all Olshey is doing is saying to MIN "we're going to tie up your cap space for 3 days and then match, unless you really make it worth our while....and Nic, if you really want to go there tell them to pony up Williams and some draft picks, or else your ass will be Portland-bound for the next 4 years."

They are trying to talk Minny out of making any offer at all. Hoping they start looking at other players and forget the whole thing.

I find it hard to believe that Portland would match any offer in excess of $45mil, but they are not going to tell Minny or Batum that.

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

When Olshey says that they got their message across that it's in Nic's best interests to sign with them, I'm assuming that the discussion centered around the fact that the Blazers can offer 5 years with 7.5% annual increases vs. 4 years with 4.5% increases. Even if the contract started lower, say $10M vs. $11M, the total package would be worth more to Batum. Additionally, I'd expect that they're pointing out that incentives that aren't achievable, as the T'Wolves potential offer is supposed to contain, aren't worth anything. I would hope that the pitch is that the Blazers are going to take care of him, just wait until they hear back on the Hibbert deal before signing an offer sheet.

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

Blazers message to Batum: We don't buy the bullshit. You're getting 8 million per year.

A little bit of this ...

Well reding between the lines of Olshey, sounds like Batum wants to move on. All Olshey could say was it was constructive because Blazers got to get their message across face to face.

Nothing about Nic wanting to stay or Nic wants to stay if compensated or anything else from Nic's camp. Just a "we got our message across" . . . OUCH!

A lot of that.

Personally I think the Blazers are handling this situation the right way. They're telling Minnesota that there's no offer sheet that they won't match, which discourages the Wolves from trying ... and on the other hand, there probably is a number the Blazers will not match which might leave Minny holding one very expensive bag -- Kahn might look back and say "Yay, I won! ... right?"

Either way, I expect Nic will be back in a Blazers uniform at a much more reasonable number (or will accept his QO if he really does want out) and the Blazers will be in OK shape in contract terms, or Minny is about to throw a near max level guy at a player who won't be able to justify it and that's eventually going to bite them in the ass.

Win-win.
