Neil Olshey's Pattern

Welcome to our community

Gerald Henderson drafted #12, age 27
Mason Plumlee drafted #22 (all-rookie team), age 25
Noah Vonleh, drafted #9, age 19
Al-Farouq Aminu, drafted #8, age 24

Young players who went in the lottery (or near it or make all rookie team). That is what Neil is "building".

You forgot: Thomas Robinson, drafted #5.

It does seem that there are real "types" that our front office goes for.
1. The big-scoring lead guard from a small school: Lillard, McCollum
2.The clean-cut all-American center: Leonard, Plumlee
3. The humble, super athletic, apparently low-skilled project: Robinson, Vonleh, Aminu
4. The "scrappy" three point shooter: Project Pat, Dani Diez
5. The ex-Clipper

And all of them have "no fuss" personalities - which, given what we're going through with Aldridge, is pretty good.

Draymond "broken off talks with GS" Green, pick 35 (all-NBA defense 2nd team), 25 years old.

Fits the bill.

Greg Monroe is also in his pattern: #1 in his draft class for Win Shares, 25 years old.

Actually, I'm wondering if Aldridge (and Love) don't sign he just saves his $ for uneven trades/next year's FA.
I've kind of bought into Zach Lowe's theory that a smart GM should sign as many free agents as possible this year while they can still be had at bargain prices, pre huge salary cap increases. That's one reason keeping kaman only makes sense if there will be a trade.

A Private Communique from Wizard Mentor to Rondae Hollis-Jefferson:

Mr. HJ,
Recently, you were drafted and immediately traded by Neil Olshey of the Portland TrailBlazers. He really wanted to keep you, you fit right into his players-who-play-hard philosophy. Do not be concerned or feel rejected - indeed we signed a player VERY similar to you. You see, as a rookie you will not be getting a lot of PT - perhaps not in your second year, either. However, during the summer of 2017, Neil will swoop in, giving up pennies on the dollar, and return you to the TrailBlazer fold where you will prosper. Please be patient while your mediocre Nets franchise bungles your development.
Sincerly and Respectfully, your future fan, THE Wizard Mentor

Add Davis to group 3.

7th best in his draft class by Win Shares. Total Olshey guy.
So is there a single Moneyball stat like that used in baseball? In the movie moneyball, the stat guy decided that the only stat that mattered was on-base percentage. It didn't matter if a guy could run, or anything else. (I'm sure this is a super-simplication from the book).

Anyway, is Win-Shares that stat for basketball? NetrtG?
