$3.3 million SEC assistant emerges as lead candidate for Oregon State Beavers job

JaMarcus Shephard is a career assistant but helps lead the Alabama Crimson Tide offense right now. Ryan Grubb is the longtime play caller underneath head coach Kalen DeBoer and came over with him from Washington to 'Bama, and so did Shephard. He, Grubb and DeBoer have been an effective three-man unit coaching offense across the country - and at the highest levels of the sport over the last couple of seasons.

Before linking up with the other two men at Washington, Shephard spent a number of years in various positions, on the offensive side of the football, under Jeff Brohm both at Purdue and Western Kentucky - and that's another head coach known for creative and efficient offenses, evidenced by what he's done at Louisville, most of all. You see, everywhere JaMarcus Shephard has coached, good offenses have seemed to come with him.

he chooses Montana State over OSU? Bozeman over Corvallis?

will the Beavs have trouble hiring a good coach as long as Barnes is AD? and as long as their contract with Blueprint Sports lasts?

Could be the case. But also could be that the Beavs told him they have an agreement with Shephard or Wilcox. So he is doing what all coaches do in that situation and make it sound like they are choosing to stay at their school/team.

Beavs ended their relationship with Blueprint Sports. FYI

I forgot about that. I remember (now) that OSU had to pay a termination fee. I'd be really curious about how much it was. Probably never know

Beavers should have AI coach and use the money saved for recruiting.

As you have previously and aptly described, what a cluster fuck of mismanagement. But they canned the underlings, so I guess it's all fixed 🙄

Fire Barnes

I believe I read an article that the underlings told management about their reservations and management steamrolled it and told them to sign it.

So was this a good hire, or a "good hire" like some people thought Bray was? Or Gary Andersen?

Only time will tell. Some coordinators can make that leap and some can't.

Case in point Lanning made it. Bray did not.

I'd say Shephard looks like he has a background to give some hope. Beavs still have an AD problem, though.

I like it. Home run hire.
Hopefully he will be good with connecting with recruits (he’s young) & use the fact that he was at Alabama to convince kids to come to OSU. And maybe he can convince a few of the Alabama bench players to come with him. He’s a motivational speaker as well and recruited in the PNW at UDub under Deboer and WSU under Leach.

Hope so. Some of those Alabama kids on the bench would become our best players overnight.

They definitely need to fire Barnes.

Agreed, Barnes needs to go.

But I'd be shocked if that happens. If he was going to be let go they'd have done it before a coach hire so new AD could have input. We're stuck with Barnes for a minimum of a year but likely much longer.

Will likely require big $ booster pushback to get Barnes out. Or the team to have a massively disappointing season next two years, which will be hard since prior years are already so bad.

yeah, it seems to be, as you say, kind of a hit and miss proposition elevating coordinators to HC

Mike Bellotti , Chip Kelly, & Mario Cristobal worked as in-house hires. Mark Helfrich did not. Lanning and Brent Venables worked out; Jimmy Lake failed. David Shaw succeeded, Turner Gill and Chad Morris failed. But, there are probably always other variables at work. Certainly in Chip Kelly's case it was a matter of him inheriting a very talented roster. Shepard is inheriting a different situation

I am wondering just how much of an offensive coordinator Shepard was at Alabama. Kalen DeBoer+Ryan Grubb have been the offensive coaching combo at Sioux Falls, Eastern Michigan, Fresno St., Washington, and Alabama stretching over 19 seasons with only a 1 year break when Grubb went to the Seahawks. I doubt Shepard was calling plays at Alabama but maybe that's wrong

This seems like an amazing hire. Will be the best troll ever if Stein leaves Oregon and Lanning poaches this guy from OSU next year

This is OSU, so of course that's what would happen. It's the most Beavery thing imaginable.

Curious…..when people say they like of love a hire, are they just being positive? I could go back to some of these Duck hires or any team for that matter and find a whole bunch of like and love tweets. Wonder how much research they do on these guys before giving a shout out. I guess the Beavs football program can only go up, but always wondered this.

The guy has been a part of the hiring process as a potential name for weeks. Canzano had the right info for pretty much the entire process. The Beavs fans I chat with have been talking about Shephard ever since the process started. Can't see why we wouldn't have some positivity, especially if he pulls some Alabama bench guys.

Hey like I said they can only go up….. I’m not a Beav fan, but I like this guys resume better than that of a Mountain West or smallish school coach. I hope this guy can clean house and turn this program around.

I wanted Vigen, but I’m happy with this hire. I would have preferred someone with HC experience.

Remember the commercial "I love ya man"
