Philadelphia 76ers @ Portland Trail Blazers 3/23/2009 Game Thread (Merged)

Nate didn't change his plan throughout the whole game as we saw the 76'ers drive to the basket too many times. Why didn't work the interior post more? What , LA can't drive or push his body into the basket any more. LA too too many 10-18 footers. When our 3 pointers weren't falling why did we try 34 attempts ? Attack the paint people!
The Blazers defense was bad tonight as we let them drive through the lanes and we were forced to shoot jump shots. Roy had 20 seconds to bring the ball down court in the 4th quarter. Why didn't he wait to do a backdoor pass to LA or someone else? Lame clock management in the whole teams part.
I admit the 3 point foul against RUDY was awful but I don't think we can entirely blame the refs when the 76'ers wanted this game more than we did and had a better game plan. So far we haven't beaten the 76'ers since 12/30/07.

P.S. My posts are still off an hour and I have double checked my CP user settings. Dunno whats going on but its friggin annoying!

Just go back from the game.....to fight all the way back and then lose it was heart breaking.
Some random thoughts as they come to me:
-Fourth quarter we are up five have all the momentum and Sergio on the break decides to drive into three sixers turns it over and philly proceeds to get a three. We never can maintain anything after that.

-One of Roy's worst games of the year, a lot which can be attributed to the sixers defense....they match up really well with him. The last possession of the night summed everything.

-It's hard to say Blake had a bad game when you score 20 but he probably game up at least 40 in shape or form. He was Andre Miller's bitch the entire night....to an extent that was truly astonishing. It's been a long time since I have seen one player abused that blatantly and him not being able to keep Miller from penetrating was one of the keys to the loss.

-I didn't understand our defensive philosophy tonight. Instead of packing in the middle and forcing PHilly to take outside shots our guards overplayed their man and ended up getting beat off the dribble over and over and over

-LMA's outside shot hasn't looked right since the concussion. However the rest of the was pretty much awesome. Great game

-Greg Oden was beastly, it really is amazing how good he is and yet has barely scratched the surface of what he can become....too bad our guards didn't show up

-Rudy played a decent game but tossed up waayyyyyy too many threes, some of which were really bad shots.
-Refs were Horrible no way around it, but they did not lose us the game....that would be guards inability to keep their man in front of them.

- Teams in the playoffs will use this game as a template on how to play us, still if we get a below average game from Roy instead of horrible one, we win

-This game is over it's time to start thinking about PHX

I am mad enough to spit nails. Yes, the Blazers did not play their best in the first half, no doubt. But they should not have to play 5 on 8 on their home court against Philadelphia. When was their last championship? What marquee player is on their roster?

Yes, Sergio's one on three was ill advised. Maybe Roy held the ball too long at the end of regulation. In any 48 minute game you will find mistakes by both teams. It happens.

The job of the referees is to keep a level playing field so that the team with the fewest mistakes wins.

At least 3 times in the OT Roy was fouled hard and no call. The foul that gave the Iguodala the game tying free throws was, at best, ticky tack. At least 2 out of bounds calls were blown, both in Philly's favor.

The 76ers took twice as many free throws as the Blazers. Mike & Mike said the game would be won by free throws but they were wrong. What they should have said was that Philadelphia would win the game by free throws.

It looked like the refs decided in advance who would win and called the game to fit. Men should not be allowed to referee NBA games if they are either corrupt or incompetent.

You have to bring it every night. Most of the team did. Unfortunately the leader was to hungover after his Huskies lost I guess.

Most of the team started out flat. Roy knew before the last game the Huskies lost, but still played well so I doubt it was that.

Here is my problem with the reffing last night. There was absolutely no rhyme or reason to the way the game was being called. Normally, you can look at as the game goes on, and figure out what the refs are calling, and how they are calling it. In this game, you could get a call one way and then 2 minutes later have the exact same situation called another way. That is completely maddening.

Normally, you can look at as the game goes on, and figure out what the refs are calling, and how they are calling it. In this game, you could get a call one way and then 2 minutes later have the exact same situation called another way. That is completely maddening.

I think that's exactly right. Nobody expects the refs to call a flawless game. I do think, however, that they owe it to everybody involved to call a consistent game. Last night, touch fouls (and sometimes non-touch fouls) were called at times, while at other times players (Roy in particular) were getting mugged under the basket without there being any foul called.

Crazy game. It was the first game I got to see live this season. When they announced that Javie was the lead official I told my wife it was likely that the officiating would end up being controversial. That was an understatement. Then, as I'm sitting there watching the game in the second quarter, without any warning or cause, my eyeglasses frame broke and one lens popped out. I spent the rest of the first half holding the things together so I could watch the game. The way the Blazers were playing, I should have taken a hint from my glasses and not watched. I got some tape from the concierge's desk at halftime and spent the rest of the game looking like a dork...actually, that's pretty normal for me...but maybe a little more so than usual.

Like I said...crazy game.

Chris, I was being sarcastic, due to the "________ [profane word for female anatomy] threads every time Violet Palmer, who is actually ranked quite well by the NBA and its players, referees a Blazer game.

But the rest of the post holds, they were either corrupt or incompetent and the calls were wildly uneven, on Portland's home court, against a team that is not a championship team and does not have superstars who would always get marginal calls. And yes, they cost the Blazers big time.

To reinforce crandc's point: it used to be that Steve Javie was one of the worst officials. Now he's considered one of the best. My contention is that he didn't get better; the rest of the officials around him got worse.

It's horrible that we got reffed to death like that but I came to the conclusion last night that if we DO go after a FA pg and we can't get sessions I'd want miller. Granted I haven't seen much of miller but the way he made Blake his bitch last night was rediculous. Not to say that Blake didn't have a good offensive game but he got burned on defense.

It was a great game with a lot of back and forth action. I especially loved to see Oden make such a large impact. But ultimately it was a let down to lose, and while the refs were questionable, we can't blame anyone but ourselves.

When the Spanish Armada came in and picked up the pace and attacked at both ends, we started to get some calls.

When Blake and Roy came back in and slowed it down again, Philly got the calls.

Fairly predictable IMO.

Rule of thumb: If you stand in place and dribble for the first 15 secs of each possession, the defense gets set and your odds of getting a call diminish greatly.

The Blazers are 18th in FTs/game, which when you consider their pace is actually higher.

What strikes me is that San Antonio is dead last in the NBA.
