It’ll never happen obviously but I’d be down to trade CJ for a legit wing/PF and replace him with Trent.
So what does that list look like?

Love, Harris, Jrue? That’s about the only legit Wings/PF that could be available possibly.

I just think it’s a bad business decision to stand pat as @BonesJones said, you have to strike while the iron is hot on an expiring contract that is unlikely to be retained and is playing at an All-Star lever statistically.

I doubt many would object to a quality trade but just to make a trade and the trash is bigger the good then it's likely not worth it. Like what was mentioned above is it at least takes two to tango.

I still contend that trading Whiteside and Hezonja for Batum (ewwwwwwwwww) and three 2nd round picks including the 2020 Cleveland 2nd (currently tied for 32nd) would be better than standing pat IF Jody didn't care about the tax situation next year. It would save us money this season too. Send one of those picks to Philly for Jonah Bolden or only get two 2nds and take Hernangomez back from the Hornets as a temporary stop gap at center, or heck sign Faried for the rest of the season.

I think the most likely moves would be dumping Biggie or Hezonja to create a roster spot or using them to take a shot at someone buried on another bench. The Olshey special.

if that's true, Bones and Hoops are going to be really unhappy
Yup!!!!!

Not trading Whiteside this year means they are more concerned about getting the 8th seed than they are with winning a title in Dame's prime. Even if I granted you that it was strictly financially motivated, there are deals they could make (expiring crap for expiring crap) that saved them money this year and still came off the books at the end of the season. Deals are out there to be made if you're creative enough.

Yeah I’d say that’s a stretch.

Dumping Hezonja would be great because then we don't have to worry about him picking up his option.

Not in my eyes and I won't be convinced otherwise.

Even if Whiteside was willing to re-sign and come off the bench next year or Nurk was willing to do that (neither would happen but I'll play along), that is basically saying that Collins will never play a minute of center because there aren't minutes available. It completely ruins lineup flexibility while still leaving holes elsewhere on the roster.

I want Karl Anthony Towns. I don't know if he's available or what it would take to get him, but he would be a great #2 guy with Lillard. Towns is a high-level scorer at a different level than McCollum, even shooting better than Lillard in his fantastic season.
His TS% is 64.6 vs Lillards 62.1. But I'm comparing him to McCollum, not Lillard. McCollum's true shooting percentage is 54.2 percent.
Lillard and Towns together would be tough to defend. Towns is shooting 41 percent on 8.2 three-point attempts per game this season.

I call bs on that. There has been nothing said by the Blazers to support your opinion

The starting five is most likely set for next season. Whether it’s good enough to win a championship, only time will tell. They look balanced on paper. But they have yet to play a game together and won’t before the deadline. Olshey can’t/shouldn’t make any decisions until he evaluates them. Trading/not trading Whiteside would have a minimal impact because I don’t believe Olshey is looking to change that five until he does.

Olshey already said who he wants to start that's Dame CJ Hood Zach Nurk.

Well who knows when Hood will be back and we need depth.

Cool

Cool

Dame
CJ
Ariza
Collins
Nurkic
Melo
Hood
Trent
Skal

and that’s not counting guys that could take a jump like Simons, Nas, Hoard, and Gabriel or Whiteside staying. Pretty solid starting point.

Ariza, Skal, Hood, and Melo are far from guarantees to be on the roster as all could be free agents.

Batum would create another expiring contract for next season to deal, so not a terrible idea as it still allows us trade flexibility.

Great.... A player making $28M whose play is only worth $4M.

Well have lots of teams lining up to take on that contract!

Yes it doesn't sound attractive, but 21 FA class is much better so there will be teams willing to get this contract back in order to free some cap space.

Yeah, that's my thought process.
Do we need that big of a contract if we just want tradeable expirings? I'd rather have 2 guys making 14 to move around in deals than one guy making 28. Unless the market is there to acquire a star, having Batum just to trade his deal is pretty useless.

I would too, but we could probably get back more assets for taking on Batum (starting with CLEs 2020 2nd Round Pick).

Having Batums deal wouldnt be useless even if we acquired a role player. Itd match Otto Porters by itself. There will be other similar options that we cant see yet.

Having Batums contact would also mean we could match salary without giving up Ariza, this offseason and into next season.

Teams that are trading talent for assets dont care about the level of production of the expiring contract theyre getting back. They care about the assets they get in return for their talent (which usually doesnt come close to matching salary), as well as not having future contractual obligations. Expiring contracts help facilitate the transfer of assets for talent without providing future contractual obligations to that team.

Blah. blah. blah. :blahblah:

I'm well aware of your position & thought process on this. I just completely disagree with you.

But that's ok. You're entitled & have your mind already set...

You mean to tell me the team hasn't come out and shared their whole plan for the direction of the team and all trade talks?

Putting words in a persons post again that aren't there. This seems to be a bad habit of yours as you jump from one extreme to another. What I mean to tell you is that what you posted is nothing more than wild speculation that has no basis. Nothing more and nothing less.
