Scoot Henderson thread

Why is it so hard to understand that 99.99% of 19 year olds are not ready to play at star level in the NBA? The naysayers are blaming Scoot for not being a 19 y/oROTY point-guard candidate on a tanking, very young team, with a coach that doesn't exactly have a track record of developing guys. What would he have looked like if he were playing for GSW, for example? Clearly his shooting needs work. No argument there. Many many players have not had great rookie seasons.

We get it, Scoot is not good enough for you. I suggest putting it in your signature for the rest of his career.
Totally understand your perspective. This forum is a great place to share ideas and learn how other fans are viewing the team/players. I don't post a lot on this forum. I like to think that when I do contribute, that others appreciate my input, even if it doesn't line up with their perspective.

It brings me no pleasure to see Scoot struggle. Acknowledging that he is struggling should not be vilified on this forum. I'll be the first poster to be excited when he elevates his game to the level deserving of the #3 draft pick.

Yeah wasn’t there an instance with door dash and delivering to the station where he publicly blasted some female door dash driver?

I mean I’m torn on Marang. He seems harmless, acts like he’s in the know, and I want to like him.

But he bugs the shit out of me. If he says ‘Tangential’ one more time I’m going to lose it.

His co-host makes fun of him constantly. It’s funny

Correctly, that was like a week prior to his blasting of the pizza place. I didn't even mean for my comment to be an attack on him, but to provide a different method that might not negatively impact others.

I have notice the guy tends to be involved in a lot of situations where he's the victim; makes your wonder...

Scoot on fire tonight. This is why he was picked 3. Very happy to see!

Im right there with you.

Pre-draft, I was not excited about the idea of Scoot because his game had so many yellow flags.

As he did more media and got to see his personality more, I felt more comfortable with him as a draftee.

Watching him play live in summer league (for 10 minutes) I finally saw a glimpse.

Physically, he has the makings of a star.

Personality/Mentality/Approach to the game - I like what I see.

Skills wise, he still has major holes in his game. Not sure he closes the gap to get to star level... but Im confident that he'll get to an above average starter (due to his mentality/approach)

Everything Brogdon does on the court looks deliberate. But yet he is a mid tier NBA player

I'm with you for most of this but how has Chauncey been less than excellent at developing guys? Ant has blossomed under Billups, Shae started slow in his rookie season but ended strong and carried that through to this season, Jabari, Toumani and now look at what Scoot is doing.

In game management Chauncey has left something to be desired but player development has been nothing short of fantastic.

and I’m not sure how many people care about game management when it seems like the objective with all the ‘soreness’ 25 games into the season is to lose.

I don't think the sixth man of the year on the team with the second best record in the league... is a "mid tier NBA player".

I consider anybody who is never going to sniff an All Star appearance, but is an above average starter as mid tier

I’ve been a Blazer fan for many years. I recognize my opinion is in the minority. I’m rooting for Scoot. Help me see the truth - what do you see in Scoot that gives you so much hope for him in the future?

I was skeptical of Scoot before the draft. In the G-League regular season -
- His PER was only 13.5. That's below average for the G-League.
- 3.5 turnovers and 3.3 fouls per game.
- Not only did he shoot 27.5% 3 pointers in the G-League regular season, he also only shot 46.5% for 2 pointers. That's not good efficiency.
- For being a point guard that facilitates scoring, he only had a 98 offensive rating. Combine that with a 122 defensive rating, one of the worst in the G-League.
- His G-League team only went 11-21.

Many of the red-flags we saw in his G-League performance, we now see in his NBA performance.

I honestly look forward to the day I can say I was wrong about Scoot.

That day is now

I mean concussion protocol ended up being a 3 week ordeal.

Don't know if this is true, but it would be an interesting factoid.

look at all those passing lanes that open up when defenders start playing him for the shot.

to me, the most glaringly obvious things he has to work on are:
1. finishing around the hoop.
2. shooting off the dribble.
3. going left.

he's gonna be unstoppable with his passing/creation once he figures out how to score. what i loved most about him in the GLeague was his willingness to pass. a true PG.

He just is always looking for the open man.

In game 17 (compared to game #20 for Scoot), Dame had a 24/11/6 game with 6 turnovers....at age 22.

It would seem Mr. Henderson is on a decent track with PLENTY of time to improve.
Clyde Drexler's closest was 21 points with 6 rebounds and 2 assists in game 63 as a 21-year-old rookie.

Really like the progress we are seeing out of Scoot. He seems to let the game come more to him and isn't playing so frantically like the first 10 games. Seems he's gotten those early game jitters out. His 3 point shot of late has been a nice surprise too, wonder if he has been putting in a lot of work on his shot, if so it shows. We just all have to be patient with Scoot, right now he looks every bit worthy of the #3 selection, but he is young and is going to have his ups and downs, he'll have more downs this year I am sure, we just gotta be patient. My main criticism I have that he still needs to really work on is the fouling, he is still a fouling machine.

Now that Scoot is taking and making some 3's he is seeing a much more open court. Defenses have to guard his shot now. Next progression might take a full season. He needs to work on finishing left. When (yes I said WHEN) he does that he will be one of the best PG's in the league.
Get ready everyone because this guy will be fun to watch hopefully for a very long time.

I left that out of my post. Yes he has been fouling. Kind of think that is to be expected from a rookie. I do see he is working in games on this. He obviously is doing more talking to the refs and Chauncey is coaching him on the sidelines quite a bit when he gets a cheap foul.

Said this at beginning of the year the game just had to slow down for him. His pace in this game is excellent.

We are going to have some tough choices soon, to me he’s the ideal PG he can score but what he does that we haven’t had since Rod Strickland is he makes the game so much easier for his teammates. Guys are going to want to play with him he’s going to have the Steve Nash Jason Kidd effect on teammates. What I mean by that is guys like Walker are going to look better than they are by simply playing with A pg that creates easy scoring opportunities.

back to the dilemma Ant Shae and Scoot….. ugh makes my brain hurt. Someone ain’t going to be happy coming off the bench. I love Ant but I would rather have Scoot and Sharpe as my starting guards, maybe hope Sharpe grows a little into a SF but not likely

I don't believe there is a single answer.

Short-term, I'd go with Ant/Sharpe the Scoot coming off the bench. Long-term, if Scoot progresses like I believe he will (based on the progress seen thus far), I'd go with a Scoot/Sharpe combo.

Perhaps by the time we are ready for the Scoot/Sharpe combo, there will be a trade that makes sense in which we give up Ant for someone else.

I guess what I don't get, is the fear of being wrong. Who cares? I choose to believe in a player until all doubt is removed of his inability to rise to the next level. Is there some prize for being right about a player being not good?

And before someone asks....the prize for supporting before proof is existing..... is a personal place of positive, rather than negative.... until such questions are answered. Simple, really.
