In a way..we currently have a roster full of future assets sans Kaman??? That's an awfully strong reaction for a player that isn't going to be here next season. Why would you turn up your nose at turning him into a future asset?
I have to believe you're being intentionally obtuse. There is no reasonable permutation of events for this summer that would require use of Henderson's bird rights that couldn't be accomplished without them. It's not $12M/year.
There are ways to get close to the cap or over before signing him.
They sign players up to $12M under, then sign Crabbe for $10M. For example. Crabbe's cap hold is tiny. His next contract won't be. $947K this year.
Just imagine that Henderson is capable of 3 years of peak performance and willing to come off the bench for Kurt Thomas money...why wouldn't you want him coming off the bench? There's a value in rewarding hard work with loyalty. People won't think Dame is young when Henderson is the same age as Lamarcus...I just don't see replacing him coming off the bench with a better option than a Luke Babbit or Nolan SmithI have to believe you're being intentionally obtuse. He's going to get role player money and he's been a starter all his career...I'm comparing him to vets from the Kurt Thomas, Marcus Camby, Gerald Wallace era..and Henderson has value to a team that wants to be a regular playoff contender...he's just not that old...we paid an ancient Camby 13.3 mil to play about 7 good games and be a locker room cancer ending with a coach firing....Gerald Henderson is a high character, hard working, unselfish guy...I just don't see the reason to not keep him around for the prime of his career and benefit from his bench contributions. And what, precisely, do you mean when you say "Kurt Thomas money"?
They could instead give him a 4 year deal at 5+M prior to signing Crabbe, thus preserving $6M in cap space since they don't have 11.4M tied up in Henderson's cap hold, and accomplish the exact same result. If the Blazers want to give Henderson a 5 year deal at $4M+, this is how to do it. That's assuming Crabbe signs for $10M.
Gerald Henderson has never been as good as Sean Elliott. Elliott was a two time all star. Hendo will never sniff an all star gameRemember Sean Elliot with the Spurs...to me that could be Gerald Henderson with the Blazers for 2 or 3 years
that's a pretty finite statement...Zasha almost made allstar this yearGerald Henderson has never been as good as Sean Elliott. Elliott was a two time all star. Hendo will never sniff an all star game

A 5 year deal may be what hendo wants to sign with us, turning down the 4-year/$5M+ he's offered by another team. They could instead give him a 4 year deal at 5+M prior to signing Crabbe, thus preserving $6M in cap space since they don't have 11.4M tied up in Henderson's cap hold, and accomplish the exact same result.
THIS would b a win!I wonder if we could get D-Mo and KJ McDaniels from Houston for Hendo. They are pretty desperate.

You're grasping at straws. What possible reason would he have to want to sign a deal for the same amount of money spread over more years?A 5 year deal may be what hendo wants to sign with us, turning down the 4-year/$5M+ he's offered by another team.
You assume it's same money. The Blazers can offer 5/30 at $6M/year, while other teams can offer 4/24 at $6M. And 7.5% raises. You're grasping at straws. What possible reason would he have to want to sign a deal for the same amount of money spread over more years?
Just give up. You're wrong. Accept it.
By being voted in. That won't happen with Henderson. He doesn't have a country behind him. He's jag in the USA which means "just another guy"that's a pretty finite statement...Zasha almost made allstar this year
http://www.blogabull.com/2014/7/13/5896193/kirk-hinrich-free-agency-rumors-bullsThe Bulls managed to sign Pau with cap space, Mirotic for MLE, and Hinrich for $2.7M room exception.
MLE+room >$6M.
If he gets more years, he might take the pay cut for job securityHe's already making 6 million this season. With the cap booming in the summer, it's hard to imagine him staying at that salary or even taking a pay cut.
To tell you the truth I must have got lost. Thought we were talking Crabbe here. 12 MIL for him from Olshey easily. Henderson? Yes, I think you are right. 10 MIL MAX from us although I could see another team go as high as 12.
I can't see any way in this market with the amount of cap space available for so many teams that Hendo doesn't get a bigger offer than that. It's just the reality of the new salary cap. The difference between SA getting players to play cheap and where Portland is reflects how much closer they are to a Title.I would be very much in favor of keeping Hendo. I think he will be had for 5/6 mil a season which is a good value. Good vets are important to a young team, and he's pretty young still.
Fortunately, we have the moratorium. If NO can get in and hit free agency hard, he can hopefully get a commitment from some free agents before any deal Crabbe might sign would have any impact on us.I didn't even think about crabbe's low cap hold. That's actually concerning. A team might make him a big offer right out of the gate to take a chunk of our cap space off the table. Similar to what Dallas did with chandler parsons when Houston was chasing bosh.
