It IS a black/brown/person of color and white issue. You always have to consider the power dynamics and historical context. I'll put it a different way... as a woman I can call my best girl friend a bitch and mean it as a term of endearment - but if you, as a man, do it... prepare to get your face slapped.

I once went out to a Salsa dance club with my white friend Tiffany who proceeded to drink too much and thought it was hilarious to walk through the bar yelling out "Juan" or "Jose" to see how many people turned around to look. I was like, WTF are you doing you idiot?!? I told her she was going to end up getting a well deserved beat down if she didn't shut up and I got her out of there immediately. Proper names such as Tyrone/Jerome/Pocahontas can be and are used as racial slurs.

@dviss1 has probably called some African American friends the N word over the years but I don't ever say that word because I'm not a person of color and it has a completely different meaning when it comes out of my mouth.
 
Yeah...saying “boy” to a black man is much much different. I would not appreciate being called boy either but it’s a whole different deal for a black man. People who say “rappers say the N word why can’t I”...are probably racist. How about you just don’t say it and let black people say what they want?

It is why protesters in Memphis in 1968 were wearing signs saying "I AM A MAN". It's 50 years later and we're still questioning this?!?

I am getting reminded of the time Bill O'Reilly went to a restaurant with Al Sharpton and was astonished that the mostly black clientele behaved like civilized people, rather than shouting "Yo, m-f, bring me iced tea".

The 14th Amendment specifically changed that. First it clarified that "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws."

It went on to say, "Representatives shall be apportioned among the several States according to their respective numbers, counting the whole number of persons in each State, excluding Indians not taxed."

I don’t think dviss is a bad guy at all. I just don’t understand his logic. It’s so hard to have any conversation with him outside of basketball because he takes everything and claims it’s racist or you’re defending trump no matter if you have denounced racism or trump a million times. He says the slightest shit is racist meanwhile I have seen him say many things you could easily take offense to as a white person and claim it’s also racist. It just makes no sense. People have different opinions dviss, that doesn’t make them racist or a trump supporter. It’s also an issue with other posters on here. Crandc constantly likes to shit on white men. It never said that blacks were 3/5 of a person. It said that the number of enslaved blacks only counted 3/5th as much as citizens did when determining representation. The purpose of that fractional count wasn't to deprive enslaved blacks of representation (they had none anyway), but rather to keep slave states from having MORE power by letting them have credit for the full number of disenfranchised slaves that lived there.

I agree that it's an ugly provision of the Constitution and I'd love to see the document rewritten to remove any reference to slavery.

We have a decent amount of minorities in power but do you really believe that the percentage in power is at the same percentage of the population? How many Fortune 500 CEOs are people of color or women? How many head coaches in college football/basketball are African American? Hell, how many head coaches of female athletes in college or professional leagues are female?

Nah. It was an accounting system about who got the most power. The slaves had zero power and would have had zero power even if they'd been counted the same as citizens. It wasn't like Alabama or Georgia getting more representation would have been good for slaves. Just the opposite is true.

And that's my whole point. Its all about context. There is no black and white. It depends one the user of words and the recipients and that was my point.


What a word means to one person doesn't mean it means the same thing to the next person, so there IS no black and white its all subjective.

Regarding the boy thing, I brought that up, because where is the line drawn?

When do we pull up our big boy pants and let the superficial shit die away and focus on the legit concerns of this world? (Not saying racism isn't a legit concern).
