Biden’s Ukraine visit upstages Putin and leaves Moscow’s military pundits raging

President Joe Biden’s surprise visit to Ukraine sparked anger and embarrassment among many of Russia’s hawkish military pundits on Monday, increasing pressure on Vladimir Putin as the Russian leader prepares to justify his stuttering invasion in a national address.

Biden’s historic visit came days before the one-year anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, providing a symbolic boost to Kyiv at a crucial juncture in the conflict.

But the visit caused fury in Russian pro-military and ultranationalist circles, as it upstages Putin on the eve of a major address in which the Russian president is expected to tout the supposed achievements of what he euphemistically calls a “special military operation.”

“Biden in [Kyiv]. Demonstrative humiliation of Russia,” Russian journalist Sergey Mardan wrote in a snarky response on his Telegram channel. “Tales of miraculous hypersonics may be left for children. Just like spells about the holy war we are waging with the entire West.”

“I guess there are lunch breaks in a holy war,” he said.

...

A Telegram account managed by Russian army and naval servicemembers, Zapiski michmana Ptichkina, noted ironically that Biden had reached Kyiv before Russian President Vladimir Putin. “Almost a year after the beginning of the Special military operation, we are waiting in the Russian city of [Kyiv] for the president of the Russian Federation, but not for the [President of the] United States,” it said.

Biden’s visit was an unprecedented journey by a US leader into an active warzone where the US did not have a large military presence.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Monday that Russia was suspending its participation in the New START nuclear arms control treaty — the last remaining arms control agreement between Washington and Moscow.

The big picture: The announcement capped off Putin's state of the nation address to Russian lawmakers in which he raged against the West with many of the same claims he has previously used to justify the war in Ukraine.

Catch up quick: The U.S. earlier this year accused Russia of violating the terms of the New START (Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty) pact by refusing to allow on-site inspections.

  • The New START treaty, which entered into force in 2011 and had been extended through February 2026, seeks to limit the long-range nuclear weapons programs of the U.S. and Russia.
  • The two countries agreed in March 2020 to suspend inspections due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But when the U.S. sought to resume them last August, Russia rebuffed the efforts, the State Department said.
What they're saying: "I am forced to announce today that Russia is suspending its participation in the strategic offensive arms treaty," Putin said at the end of his major speech on Monday, just three days ahead of one year anniversary of the war in Ukraine.

Secretary of State Tony Blinken called the decision "deeply unfortunate and irresponsible."

Biden lies to us often. I post about them just as often. If his fan base turns a blind eye to Biden's lies, that is on their ignorant asses.

BTW: Those fact checking websites are all biased towards the left. Therefore their "facts" are just as biased.

That's a very broad statement and simply not entirely true. Plus, most of the sites/links claiming fact checking bias towards the left are from sites who are biased to the right....funny how that works.

And again, trying to compare Biden to Trump is like comparing apples to oranges. ("oranges", pun intended)

Different fruit perhaps but both rotten.

Putin has used chemical weapons in Syria, Broken international rules about invading sovereign countries, exercised human rights violations, assasinate political opponents and has threatened the world with nukes since invading Ukraine....fact is PUTIN is causing global unrest.....not Joe Biden...do your fucking homework....the source of this evil in the world is not the United States. NATO will stand up to this new Hitler ..testing the world's order is something China, Russia and N Korea are all guilty of. FUCK PUTIN...he doesn't follow the UN charter or the international community guidelines for world peace but some Republican partisan assholes seem to want to blame the democrats for Putin's war and atrocities..fuck off to those folks.

Not as big of a liar as Trump is about the lowest bar anyone has ever set. Just saying.

That could probably be said about every POTUS ever.

Stretching the truth or speaking in "half truths" on some topics as opposed to someone like Trump who lies about everything are different "bars" on different levels, IMO.

Yeah, Biden is no angel, but my issue is that it's really not fair to try to draw any sort of parallel between him and Trump.

Putin falsely claims it was West that "started the war" in Ukraine almost a year after he ordered invasion

A treaty Russia wasn't ever going to abide by anyway. Big deal.

Props to Biden for supporting Ukraine.

What could be said about every POTUS?

They both held the same office for the same country. It's fair to draw parallels. You can give Biden a pass if you want though.

Yup, some people will go to any extreme, no matter how factual or bombastic it may be, for no other reason than to make the other guy look bad

I'm not giving Biden "a pass", never said anything like that.

"What could be said
" is that it's fair to assume that ALL POTUS"s have not always been 100% forthright, but Trump is on another level of dishonesty and credibility.

The only "parallel" between Trump and Biden that I would agree with is that they are both male human beings...and for Trump, even that is a stretch.

I think we we have a different idea of drawing a parallel between people..

The only comparison I can make is they're both old as dirt

Biden should be in East Palestine not Kyiv.
Trump spent time rubbing elbows with Putin instead of coming to check on us in the NW when a giant fire was raging here, houses being destroyed, and lives being lost. I'm guessing you didn't say shit about where Trump should be at that time, did you?

Biden is our President and I stand behind him.............waaay behind him.

Just like talking to a toilet, full of shit and in need of flushing...

Calling people toilets is not persuasive. But I guess some people think insulting others makes them look superior.

Biden Implored to Avert 'Carbon Bomb' by Blocking Texas Gulf Oil Terminals

"It's hypocritical for the Biden administration to allow these things to get built and then say the U.S. wants to decrease its own emissions," said one climate campaigner.

https://www.commondreams.org/news/sea-port-oil-terminal

Here is Biden, clearly not giving a shit if we all live or die by "climate change".

Just like talking to a toilet, full of shit and in need of flushing...
I have no idea what that is like ...I've never talked to toilets whether clean or full of shit. There are very different degrees of corruption in politics but let's not fall into false equivalencies. Choices

Just like talking to a toilet, full of shit and in need of flushing...

Why have you suddenly relegated yourself to simply insulting people and making claims while when asked, refusing to produce any evidence/proof?...not very compelling, not at all.

I am sorry, but I don't give a crap what anyone who defends Trump or Biden has to say.

Talking to a supporter of either of them or their affiliated party, is like talking the exact same person. Someone who doesn't really care about politics since defense of their party/candidate is literally their only true interest in the conversation.

Seemingly intelligent people, making themselves too biased to be believed, even in the slightest.

You're making some glaringly false accusations about people's values and political leanings.....I'm not a democrat or republican but I can differentiate between the two presidents you seem to have equal disdain for.... you're welcome to your opinion but it's no more valuable than mine and if you want to know how I feel about the two guys...I'll tell you without hesitation. If you can't see the difference in the GOP and the Dems today, you just aren't willing to look there. No need to insult others who do look there and form opinions independent of partisan loyalties. There are plenty of us around here. Here's a starter....who did you vote for?
