Even IF Yang was the guy, they could have moved down, collected more assets and still selected him.
It was guaranteed someone would come out with the 'another team was going to take him if we didn't' to cover their a$$e$, but this is SUCH a reach and a waste of a near lottery pick regardless of what he develops into.

Well, "Draft Experts", including very respectable ones like Givony (Mike's former partner), often get it wrong. Look at their big boards and they always miss out b/c, imo, they're evaluating talent in a vacuum, especially as it relates to a weaker league. Therefore, they may over emphasize irrelevant traits. Hence, Givony was gushing over Amen but then, in the same podcast interview, said stuff like "Well, you just gotta pick Scoot ahead of him because Generational PG is the consensus."

Not saying Scoot won't ever get up there but it's clear he isn't the Generational PG that players like Ja, Kyrie, Rose, Wall, Isiah Thomas, etc were already by Year 2 so pretending that you're gushing hard about one guy and then, just saying "but consensus" is not good talent evaluation.

By that, their overall method seems to be different than evaluating a prospect and "eye testing" them in relation to the NBA while cross checking with other metrics (ex. advanced stats, previous archetypes, player interviews, intangible elements, etc).

Because of that, I think that's where people can fail as a GM as they don't fully encompass what will work best in the NBA and let various blinders cloud them.

That said, even Presti and Buford get it wrong.

Imo, there probably is such thing as tunnel vision but I feel good GMs/scouts know how to pinpoint several archetypes with pinpoint accuracy. An Olshey, for example, was only really good at finding 'combo guard' types and that limited his drafting capability. A Presti seems to be able to find a variety of talent at any position. Pritchard and Buchanan, it seems know how to find several player types and work as a duo to compliment each other (hence, they can get Sabonis, Haliburton, Oladipo, Nembhard, etc just like they identified Dame, Roy, Aldridge, Batum).

Based on what he wrote about other players in the past (like Giannis), I think Mike really likes lengthy+athletic wings and forwards. He seemed to be a major fan of the Thompson twins. But consensus probably got him.

Today, I don't know that he is correct here. I think he wants to find the next Jokic/Sabonis but those guys don't grow on trees and the next Jokic/Sabonis is probably 15-20 years out from now.

Either way, this is such an 'out there' pick that someone is going to have to do a major re-evaluation here regarding their blinders....either us fans or the top brass.

there’s and interesting split of going for extreme skill and defensive instincts. In a team defensive concept predicated on being able to have all-Defense guys all over the court, can you cover one big’s lateral deficiencies with superior rim coverage? The kinetic chain issues people are bringing up (high hips, narrow shoulders, etc), if true, are pretty historically problematic.
 
No way we couldn’t have traded back again. I think I gotta go over to my Raiders board for a few months, it’s less depressing.

Interesting that, while the scouts all averaged out in the early 2nd, there was such a huge disparity in the stats guys. 3 seemed to think the same way the blazers did and the others barely (if actually) had them on the board).
What were those 3 stat models and why?
 
The chance that all other scouts were wrong and PORs were right is vanishingly small. Hubris plain and simple and heads should roll. Joe doesn’t know shit. Stuck with Grandpa Jrue and a guy that has never played really competative ball and will never see a second contract in the NBA

It seems like if Yang was a known commodity, the draft commentators would have known who he was and Silver would have been able to announce the trade with a straight face.
 
major news sites nyt nydn etc. are calling “crazy”. seriously fire everyone. I really don’t think this FO is that bright. Embarassing. The bright side is another lotto pick next year.

the only way Joe could have topped this was if POR had the first pick and he passed over Flagg. Wouldn’t put it past him. Not kidding.
 
I'd have thought getting a 19 year old 7'2 center clearly means Ayton or Williams or Reath are getting traded...I'd have thought that would make fans pretty happy

Would we still have to have him on the roster for next season? Pay him. We did pick him first round.
