Is the modern NBA much faster? League average pace in 85-86 was 102.1 possessions per game; last year it was 98.5.The much faster, modern NBA is 40-50 yrs removed from that era.

Peek on the Yahoo podcast is very very low on Edey. Called him effectively a sideshow who is too slow footed to do anything of significance in the league.
She sees him dominating SL and getting drafted top 20, but feels like he'll be a huge bust in the NBA. She said if Portland uses a lottery pick on Edey, it would be a fireable offense considering the rest of the roster as it stands.
I 100% agree with her. Do not draft Edey.
Ok maybe faster wasnt the right adjective. Is the modern NBA much faster? League average pace in 85-86 was 102.1 possessions per game; last year it was 98.5.
She's the nba draft guru at Yahoo the past few years. Was one of the first people who was on the Shaedon bandwagon after reporting on him at the EYBL. She's got some draft bonafides that make me trust her opiniom more than some othersI don't know who Peek is, but a fire-able offense in this draft? Come on.
Does this person guarantee which players will be good? Are there any in this draft?
The roster as it stands? What does that mean? The roster as it stands won 21 games last season.
Yeah, it's more spread out and many rosters will not have to sacrifice having a near 7 footer out there to have five guys who can shoot the three.Ok maybe faster wasnt the right adjective.
But it's more suited for players who aren't slow and plodding because of the varied offensive attacks and fewer postups. Offensive efficiency has skyrocketed and I think will leave players like Edey by the wayside.
Similarly, his limited versatility on defense will make him a prime target for perimeter oriented offenses who have speed/agility at every possession.
We all know that defense is going to be a question, and few are talking about him being some kind of team centerpiece. But his size will also give him the ability to take advantage of those perimeter-oriented teams on the offensive end, both with his pick-setting and his post presence. Situationally, he can absolutely bring value, especially to a team that was near the bottom of the league in offensive efficiency.Ok maybe faster wasnt the right adjective.

We can do both--swing for the fences with 7, and take a high-floor "bench specialist" at 14.Yeah, it's more spread out and many rosters will not have to sacrifice having a near 7 footer out there to have five guys who can shoot the three.
If a team like Miami takes Edey it will make sense because they can dictate when they use him as a mismatch against opponents. We just don't have a roster that affords us the luxury of drafting a bench specialist whose ceiling seems to be where his game is at right now. We have to swing for the fences and try to get someone that will develop into a high level starter with versatility.
I am not taking situationally effective dudes who need optimal game plans to even see the floor with either lottery pick.We all know that defense is going to be a question, and few are talking about him being some kind of team centerpiece. Again, I get the narrative, but reality doesn't match it as much as we act like it does.

I think that's massively overstating it, but I still respect your opinion, even though I disagree with it.I am not taking situationally effective dudes who need optimal game plans to even see the floor with either lottery pick.

Not saying they haven't. Peek's views just align with mine. That said, I am dead against the idea of clingan too, but who knows.I mean, Givony thinks Edey is like a top 7 player in this draft, and he was also sold on Shaedon. It's not like Edey doesn't have veteran draft analysts advocating for him.
But what if Edey IS the precedent?
Maybe he is the "draft for crazy upside" with upside being "change how the game is played" as Steph was when GSW drafted him.
In theory, this dude could be the guy you throw into the paint to have Wemby figure out how to stop him. He will just toss him out of the way and dunk? Defensive side be damned?
(Again, I know nothing about this dude other than reading about him, never seen him play, have no effin idea).

Think people are scared because there is no precedent for a player like Edey having success in the modern NBA. Even Clingan has Gobert as a distant comparison.

Givony's latest mock disagrees.Edey will be gone by 14.
Yeah, there's that, but part of the issue is there is A LOT of precedent for players like Edey having success in the modern NBA. I just rattled off a dozen or so of them.
Everyone acts like every team these days is the Warriors when the Warriors are more of the exception. Most teams have a guy 6-10 to 7-1 who either can't guard on the perimeter or isn't an offensive threat on the perimeter or both.
Zubac has scored at least 14 in 5 of the last 6 games vs. the Blazers. He's had double-doubles in 4 of the last 7 and only has played 30 minutes in 2 of those games. He's shooting like 70% in those games.
If we didn't have a big to match him, he'd kill us, and every fan here would be torching Cronin for not having a big to oppose him.
He's posted a 125 or better offensive rating in 5 straight years. He's been over 130 3 of the last 5. His defensive rating is usually between 110-112, and yet his overall rating differential is around +10 to +20.
If the NBA really had no place for "slow" bigs, players like him would be extinct. But they aren't. And even those we tend to forget are thriving.
I'd love for us to pick Edey at #14.... if we first get Clingan at 7.
