Game Thread 2023-24 Game #19 - BLAZERS @ JAZZ - DECEMBER 2, 2023 - SATURDAY - 6:30 PM PST - ROOT

Welcome to our community

Be a part of something great, join today!

I've started to come around on the announcing. But the constant jump cuts, the timing of replays, and all the interviews taking up the entire screen during live action have soured me on the Blazers broadcast. I don't recall watching any other teams broadcast, or national broadcasts that skip as much live action as the Blazers do.

Newsflash, most fans just want to watch the GAME. They don't really care about the ancillary crap.

I went back and watched the Utah Jazz version of the game and they DID NOT CUT OUT the last possession of the first half.

Who the fuck decides to interrupt the game with 4 seconds left in the first half, instead of actual live play?

The Blazer Broadcasting choice of what to show ( a layup 2 plays ago instead of the foul that just happened) and when to show it is really bad.

Near the end of the 3rd quarter last night, Blazer Broadcasting viewers saw this:

at the same moment in time, Utah Jazz broadcasting viewers saw this:

Blazer Broadcasting interrupted an entire Utah Jazz possession, from baseline to baseline, to show an interview with Jabari Walker and Shaedon Sharpe. Not even one of their useless replays.

We should probably move this discussion here:

The Blazer broadcast was soo bad, ESPN & NBA had to use Utah's film & announcers in the post game highlights. Jaw dropping dunks with a slight whisper of "the Blazers have very athletic players."
Yeah, I’ve been shocked about how bad the Blazers broadcast has been the last two years. It’s disappointing to not be able to see a highlight and not hear your own team’s announcers.

FYI Calabro, not every dunk is a “windmill”. Hearing Calabro go crazy over a windmill that wasn’t a windwill would visably frustrate me lol.

Forearm in the back, arms of other defender, Yurtseven, are NOT straight up.
This happened with 17 seconds left in the game and the Blazers down by 2, 113-115.

Then on the way down, Fontecchio pulled his head backwards and down. Very unsafe shit.

I'm lucky to live out of market so I can use NBA league pass and watch the opposing team's broadcasts. The Blazers are so bad, from the directing, to that analytics "expert", to the announcers. One of the worst in the league.
I usually choose the opposing team's broadcast as well

I’m so glad I rarely look at this place anymore.
Fucking complaining about a broadcast team that’s widely viewed as one of the best in the nba.
Tom haberwhatever is awful yes.
Find some fucking joy.

I don’t think complaining about the fact that calling a tomahawk dunk a “windmill jackhammer” ruins a highlight video was crazy…

Now you’re just lying to my face LOL. If you have an objective source to show that it’s true, I’ll apologize for my statement.

Actually, I’m very happy about the fact that the broadcast team has been my biggest complaint about the Blazers this season. I like Hurd, I just think at this point, Calabro should hang it up. Calabro has all the same flaws as Mike Rice to me, but I generally like Mike more because I can still be captivated by his old stories due to Mike’s affiliation with the franchise.

Find some fucking joy.
I’d argue that if you were going to have an over the top reaction to what some internet bozos think, you might be the one who needs to search for some joy lol. Either that, or you have some sort of loyalty to Hurd and Calabro, to which I would commend I guess.

Blazers broadcasting foolishly hit the Tom Hamberblab monologue button in 2 minute crunchtime. The already compressed, out of focus ROOT signal got even worse in p.i.p. mode, as we watched a very blurry Shaedon soar through the air for a big time poster dunk. Followed seconds afterwards by Toumani's mega-slam.

I watched the Pacers broadcast a few games back and it was SO much better than our broadcast. I don't know why we need all that weird filler shit. Just show the damn game. That's why we tune in.

I mean.... we watch the broadcast so we can watch the games, and the broadcast hasn't been great. It's pretty relevant for fans. We need to watch the team. I haven't seen these same issues with any of the other teams broadcasts.

Guess I'm one of the few that likes Haberstroh?
I've already followed him, but seems like a much better broadcast add than whoever the dude was last year.

The Suns team is quite bad as well. A complaint on a foul or two is whatever. Going on and on about fouls, no whistles, etc every possession is just beyond unlistenable. I’d have trouble listening to those guys, even as a Suns fan.

Yeah I like Tom too. I followed him on an ESPN podcast years ago.

However once the ball is in bounds I want to see 100% of the game. No picture in picture boxes, interviews, replays, discussions, etc.

Its fine if they want to do whatever audio only commentary. Or if they want to put those things on the screen for free throws, out of bounds, etc. But when the ball is thrown in bounds I want 100% to watch the full screen game.

I spend quite a bit of time in the bay area and down around LA. I watch the warriors and lakers feeds when I'm down there. Lakers are on replay a bunch. Seems like they replay the last play because you missed it watching a replay. They also have this tendency to bounce to the studio for in game assessments. I understand Stu Lantz is supposed to be one of the best and all but Mychal Thompson doing a board drawing during the game seems a bit extreme.
Then you have the Warriors. They show you players doing City Clean up Projects and posing with the needy children at least twice a game. Some people like to see what Chris Mullen is up to. Funny thing Festus Ezeli pops in all the time. Are the Blazers still paying that guy?

In the end I kind of think it's just the way the NBA is going now. maybe you are right and the Blazers are worse but I have not seen it. Seemed to me the worst is the Lakers.

Does the NBA still reveal when the refs were right and wrong at the end of games? I am curious to know what they said about the end of that game.

I wasn't fond of the last guy, don't necessarily like the new guy, but I've noticed something weird about Blazer fans.

There are some who romanticize the "old days" when it comes to the Blazers. Be it coaches (Stotts) or announcers (people *still* pining for Mike and Mike) or have some weird anti-Seattle bias (can't stand KC because he works for the Sonics for years).

It's laughably provincial.

Yeah, it's funny to me as well. I hardly knew anyone who liked the Mikes when they were on, and then they get fired, and their fans come out of the woodworks. Happens with players all the time as well. mediocre role players always looked fondly at as "the one that got away", guys like Patty Mills, seeing it now with Zach Collins. Hell, people di it when Moses Brown had like 6 good games for OKC.

Surprised we haven't seen posts about Nickeil Alexander-Walker since he had one really great game with Edwards out.

This is the same city that protested about the carpet in the airport.

the official NBA postgame foul report said the Blazers hacked a couple Jazz players, and the refs missed those calls. All the shoves, headbutts, & eye pokes that Utah applied to Portland were considered perfectly clean minimal contact by the league office.

People tend to be silent when things are going well or something is happening that they like. Then they get more verbal when those things go away. It’s just human nature. At least in this culture.

This should be the baseline rule for all decisions.
