Interesting that Mullens offered the HC job to Wilcox who turned it down.

rumor is it was an offer that wasn't any kind of an offer he could accept. As in low annual salary with incentives tied to recruiting. That the AD would have to approve all assistant coach hires.

sounds like the only purpose was an offer to keep the faction of donors, former players, and fans who are high on tradition happy. The AD can now say they tried.

there were plenty of rumors about Lane Kiffin (who reportedly wanted the job) and Urban Meyer (who is a friend of Phil Knight). That made a big chunk of the fanbase uncomfortable, and it was the motivation for the letter some players wrote that backfired on them

It's hard to believe that the salary offer was insulting but yeah probably incentives tied to recruiting which they probably did with Lanning.

I think there's a lot to like...and be a little to be concerned about with those 3 names:

* I have a barely-educated guess that the top of the Duck pyramid, Phil Knight, Rob Mullens, Pat Kilkenny, etc. have seen the major impact that energy has on recruiting and have empowered Lanning to add 'energy-type' coaches willing to grind. All three of the announced coaches so far are noted for their energy and recruiting ability

* the staff is still largely incomplete, but with 3 white faces on top of the coaching flow chart so far, Lanning might need to make a point to add some minority coaches the rest of the way. Energy is big, but so is the ability to be relatable to recruits. Don Johnson as recruiting coordinator helps in this regard. For example, it's critical the Ducks keep the Oregon Poly pipeline open. If they don't retain Joe Salave'a as DLine coach, they might lose that pipeline

* if you look at the staffs of perpetual football powers, there is always some grey hair visible. Having three early-30-something coaches raises some concern about experience and X's & O's. Now, experience is no guarantee of expertise but an older survivor of the football wars will likely know lots of things a younger guy might not have learned yet. Now, some of this can be supplied by offensive and defensive analysts so pay attention to who the Ducks get to fill those roles

also, names to watch for as far as coaching and staff hires: Tosh Lupoi; TJ Rushing; Marshall Malchow. May not add any of them. But they have all worked with Lanning in the past and that seems to be a standard he is using

Something to watch is the Georgia and FSU transfer portals. Might be some players who come to Oregon from these coaches old programs.

The good new from Oregon men's basketball game against #1 Baylor: Ducks out-rebounded them by two; Ducks shot 54% overall and 44.4% on threes against a team that held Villanova to 37 points last week. Ducks led at the half by 4. Ducks scored 8 points on free throws, same as Baylor. How did they lose by 8? Five more turnovers (I thought most not really forced) and Baylor shot 52.2 from three. Disappointed in Eric Williams. I thought in the first couple games he had shown great improvement, but now he is on second team with decreased minutes. Gets lost on defense and has lost his confidence on offense. Hopefully this game will give the whole team a boost in confidence. Altman can say if you had just done few things a little better you would have beat the # 1 team.

I hope so. Oregon has gone from something like 8th best recruiting class to something like 64th. I get angrier at Cristobal every day.

Skeptical of Dillingham as a playcaller.
Lanning is a great hire but should’ve went with a more experienced OC.

What is going on with Nix? He beat the Ducks as a true freshman. Isn't his dad some past Auburn star?

I don't know how to feel about Nix. But I have heard from a couple of people who are connected that none of the Duck freshman QB's were close to being ready for prime time

With the talent those guys had coming out of high school them not being ready would be more of a reflection of the coaching staff and not the players themself, IMO.

Aggressive move you know that Dilly has watched them practice and much film. I want Ashford?sp to stay for sure.

by the way, it's starting to sound like Oregon will add Tosh Lupoi to their coaching staff. He's the current DLine coach Jacksonville in the NFL

will probably be the Co-DC. What he was at Cal, and Washington and Alabama was consistently one of the top-10 recruiters in the nation. Oregon is at least putting together, on paper, an incredible recruiting staff. Lanning, Dillingham, and Powledge are all ace recruiters

and with Don Johnson being retained as recruiting coordinator they have a very good one already in place. Then, add Marshall Malchow as 'chief-of-staff' and director of player personnel. Who is he you ask? he's the guy who guided Georgia to 5 straight top-5 recruiting classes with the #1 class in 2018 and 2020. Currently he holds the same job at Texas A&M and if you guessed they have the #1 class this year, you guessed right. Those two position aren't as visible as coaches, but they are critical for a good program

Now, if these guys can only coach almost as well as they recruit.

there is probably no position as difficult to assess at QB. The leap from high school fields to Power-5 fields is huge. Tyler Shough was a high 4-star recruit rated the 6th best QB in the country. That rating didn't reflect his actual talent level. Mariota was a 3-star rated the 28th best QB. Braxton Burmeister was a 4-star rated the 10 best QB in the country. He was terrible

Mario and staff were great at a lot of things. Developing QBs was not one of them.
